Once GW2 comes out frankly any new MMO coming out will have to go F2P. The standard of that game even in beta, with all its bugs, outclasses most current monthly sub games. To be able to justify changing a monthly sub post gw2, well frankly the dev would be looking to fail. I wouldn't be surprised if it's what pushes all current monthly games into becoming F2P, including WoW.
Gohan, I disagree. I could name 10 great mmos, that I mostly quit because I couldn't justify paying for them, and the grass is greener syndrome.
WoW, L2, LotRO, Rift, SWTOR, Eve, Warhammer, CoH, Conan, Aion.
That's 10 I would go back to, but probably only for a week. The time and money investment for me would just not be worth while. MMOs are designed so that you spend loads of time up front with the promise of awesome fun reward later. Raids, PvP, and thus loot. But if you are only looking to spend a little time on them, what's the point?
free.....but when you top up........................
After you sir.
1.Perfect World
2.Aion

*points to Vendaku~Metal's mention of EVE Online
I have to agree, EVE Online is the best MMO I've ever played and it's the best FREE MMO out there.
And yes I did say FREE!
Now you may ask, how is it free when you have to pay? Well the beauty of it is that you only need to pay for it once and even then, you can get 3 weeks free before you even consider playing it. To fight against gold farmers, the develops created a system of trade using game time cards in game. So instead of buying gold from gold farmers, you can just buy an in-game game time card from them and then sell it in game for money. This allows people to simply buy more time with in-game money and never having to pay for more time. So when it comes down to it, if you play the game enough then you can either buy good stuff or more time.
Extra time isn't that expensive either when you look at it. When I first started playing EVE, PLEX (the in-game time cards) went for about 300 million isk each. Now that does seem like a lot as you can buy a fully fitted battle cruiser for about 1/2 that or an entry level battleship for the same price, but the other way around is great also. Say you don't want to spend the time to save up for that stuff, you can just pay for double memberships and get them without having to grind for gold. But as with everything, economies change and they now go for about 550 million the last time I checked. It's a lot more but hell, you can buy a lot more with it to so the trade off is good.
Now how long does it even take to get to that point? Well not that long at all. In the past week I've only played for 90 mins and in that time I made 75 million. And that was me doing a mission/quest semi afk and running it very inefficiently and not to mention selling things at bad prices. If I were to maximize my selling of stuff I could easily hit 85-90 million for the same set of stuff if I spent another 5 minutes setting up market orders and waiting a few days for them to sell while I did other things. If I get a good pull of mission and actively putting effort into them I can make 60 million an hour easily. So that would only take me a little over 9 hours of playing to afford another month of game time. I'm also on the extreme ends of things running missions in a faction fitted golem costing over 4 billion isk and a character with nearly perfect skills in missiles. There's still room for improvements but gains to training time is just not worth it. On a more realistic not for the average person, you can easily expect to make 10-20 million an hour from running missions or mining. And this is all assuming you stay in relatively safe empire space. Once you leave and venture into more dangerous regions your gains go up much higher. Piracy is very lucrative if you have a good group of people and target rich prey and the same goes for killing npc rats and mining in null sec. Hell, one drop from an NPC rat out there can net you 1.5 billion (I love my Pith Medium Shield Booster <3)!
Now that's just my point on how it's free. This game is much more then just that. There are so many great things about it that you just don't see in anything else. For starters you don't even need to play it to "level" up. Everything is time based and the time runs when you are not playing. So things can take days, and you can level up while sipping a beer on the beach during vacation or take a break from it to tend to your studies and not get "left behind" in comparison to all your friends who keep on playing and fail out of school unlike yourself. Also this time is truly a sandbox and the developers really do stress this point. They make it so you can do what ever you want in the game. If you feel like managing a bunch of colonies on various planets you can. If you want to research and manufacture weapons and ships, you can. If you want to mine, well you can. If you want to be an asshole, sit in front of a gate and blow up stupid noobs and laugh at them as you steal all of their shit, well the developers would beg you to keep on doing it. Hell some of the greatest things I've seen in this game has came out of these dickish things. Just recently a coalition of guilds (an alliance) thought it was a good thing to avenge their leaders ban from the game by besieging the central trade up, destroying everything that came in and out to mark the return of their leader. Their goal was to simply destroy the extensive player run economy (you can turn this game into an economy simulator if you want) and the developers simply said bring it on, sat back, and loved every moment of it with the game's economy going up in smoke due to 1000s of players being dicks at the same moment of time. Thing like this truly make this game great. There isn't any other game out there where I can make a container near a noob area labeled "free stuff" and have noobs "steal" from me without them knowing it so I can blow up their shiny new ships with my battleship and have it praised and not shunned by the developers. XD
NoPeace - out

I might buy GW2, but I've had a confusing experience with GW1, weird skill system and such :D
Anyways thanks for all of those and Gohan, that might not necessarely be true, I found FlyFF my better MMORPG... I constantly switch from pserver to pserver...

Trust me I tried to play on one of their "free" games. Turned out it wouldn't enter in game for me it kept disconnecting. After entering the support forum , I've seen countless threads like mine un-answered , countless threads about paid items also un-answered , and countless threads about "omg where is the staff". Apparently there was no staff , only veteran players answering other players.
