Unfortunately Diablo is not an MMORPG.

#1 Diablo cannot have large numbers of people in a world. It is uhh was it max of 8 or 16 people?
and
#2 When everyone leaves the instance they set up, everything is gone and thus the world does not "continue[s] to exist and evolve while the player is offline and away from the game."
Diablo is a great game and a fun RPG, but it is not an MMORPG.
Re: What are your top 5 MMORPG games and why?
Ron is right , Diablo is an MMORPG , however the word MMORPG is now applied to games , where the connection is persistent all the time while the player enjoys roaming in the world. All XP , Items , friendlists are saved on the server , and interacting with other players is possible at any time during game play. That's the modern definition of MMORPG.
That is why San Andreas Multiplayer was added to the sections too , because it is actually an MMORPG , even though it has nothing to do with swords , and dragons , and armors , nor inventory , but because it is an MMORPG.
Counter strike , Cod , can't be an MMORPG , since you play PVP all the time , there is no alternative , also it is divided by rounds , your XP , your kills , your score is not saved , unless you play on steam. Also its hard to imagine a First person shooter as RPG , and so far I only seen about 2 games of that type , one was Deus Ex , and the other is Fallout 3 , note Fallout 2 is more like a diablo 2 clone.
