That's just in the past year or two (or month in Pokemons case). I don't think that Video Games have become less entertaining its your approach to games that have changed over the years. When people compare todays games to the games of old, they really need to take of their nostalgia goggles and realise that yeah, games were good but the ones we have today are just as awesome.
You should try different genres of games or playing them less, you might find them more fun then. Also for multiplayer games it REALLY changes the experience if you are playing with good friends. For example, Left 4 Dead with randoms is good, but with a group of close friends it becomes one of the best games I've ever played.
If you want a list of some great old games then here's a few;
Grim Fandango
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 / Mysteries Of The Sith
Final Fantasy 6
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (very pro game)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Nearly any N64 Game
Silent Hill 2
Metal Gear Solid (1)
Monkey Island (The updated one is like <10Ā£)
Monkey Island = Epic.
I have a PC that can run any of the latest games, a 360, PS3, and a Nintendo DSXL, though I find myself entertained mostly out of playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game for gameboy and older gen pokemon games on my gameboy color.
Newer games are only going to be popular when they introduce something new, or have a completely unique gameplay to it. Other than that its all going to be about who has the best graphics. Though people like me who actually enjoy GOOD games will be playing Pokemon instead of leaving new PS3 games still in their plastic wrapping.
I find it that PC games (MMORPG's most of the time) for me, are less attractive than Console games, nowadays. I used to be a complete computer-game geek.. I've played like, every god damn thing that has an advertisement on any game-related website. I personally don't own neither a XBox nor a PS3 nor any of the modern consoles. Yet when I visit friends, not only because i'm enjoying the game with them, I have more fun playing console games. It's weird.. Ohhh good ol' Diablo 1.
Games are aimed at making you buy them now.
You can't judge a game by it's gameplay, till you've played it.
But you can see the graphics.
so just focus on graphics, by the time people are playing it, it's too late.
Then again, I bought God of War 3 today, it's god damn amazing on both counts.
