I apologize to those who will hate this change. But it is necessary to take into consideration the interests of ArenaNet, the community(you people), and myself. ArenaNet's primary interest is piracy. E.g. playing Guild Wars without having purchased it. Currently this is not possible. But when the GWLP is released it will be. This is a problem which must be rectified to at least some substantial degree.
I'm hoping you people are more interested in having a Guild Wars sandbox than playing a Guild Wars like game for free. While I can't check with the official servers to see if someone owns an account due to account security concerns. What I can and will do is as follows:
If WulfgarXX is still interested in hosting. This project will have a validated online server. Which means that all accounts created on it will not be made active until the owner of said account proves that he/she owns an account on the official GW servers. The method will not endanger the account details of the player.
However, just doing this will ignore one crucial element I desire for the project. That element being, the ability to play offline on a Local Area Network(LAN) by yourself or with nearby friends. So a LAN-locked version will be publicly released. Limitations will probably be:This is subject to change if someone else or I find a better solution.
- No connections will be allowed from outside the Local Area Network(LAN)
- An in-game permanent reminder advertising GW every hour or so.
While it does not completely eliminate piracy this seems to be the best compromise.
If you're interested in joining this project just PM me with what you believe you can help with.
Its ok with me since i have an account with all campaigns and i just want a gw emu for having fun alone or with some friends doing custom stuff that cant be done in official :D
Good work ;)
yea agreed, wanna try some customs to ;)
I'm with the LAN idea.
Always wanted to over-power my character and go it solo >:D
Ive re-installed GWs today, and am currently logging in. I am currently waiting as it re-downloads the internal patch. is this part of the client patch that you updated? or is this patching the zones?
And how does the emu handle this?
(Just trying to get a handle on the whole setup of the emu)

The emulator tells the client that there is no update available when it checks for updates. For zones the server requires that the client already has the information for the zone in their gw.dat file. The zone downloading as done on the official servers cannot be emulated. As that would be unlawful distribution of copyrighted material(in the USA at least).
use a host outside US ... dozens countrys dont have problems with that and even dont agree with copyright US laws ... this is the right choice. Venezuela is a good one (Chavez(president) Sucks but USA dont mess with him). And dont be not eve thinking arenaNET will not shutdown you because you are doing in the "law" they will find a way like blizz always do. The better think is move your door where they cant even knock on you, so you door never be closed.
Well...I had never planned to emulate the zone downloads. Just a waste of time in my opinion.
As for being shutdown, I doubt that occurring anytime soon. I was contacted by one of the founding ArenaNet staff last week who is interested in this project. To my surprise it was not some form of a cease and desist letter. Their main concern seems to be people playing the game without having purchased it. This problem I can't completely resolve without abandoning the project. However, I believe the benefits will outweigh the occasional dishonest "pirate" But, these benefits won't openly reveal themselves until a mostly playable release is out. For now they will continue to monitor the projects progress. On an interesting note, I've been invited to lunch and will likely follow through on the offer sometime in the next few months.
Also, as I said earlier. If the project is on the verge of being shut down I will release the entire thing as open source software. But for now...it will stay closed source.
They can't shut you down. You done absolutely nothing illegal, the same goes for when you release it. It's completely your code, and open source. The only way they would nail you is if you put up a guide on how to get the client and play the game for free, or offered a client download on your site/here.
Other than that, your fine. They will just try to convince you to close. Your fine Theora.
And you can still share the emulator with those who show you proof that they really have a legit account in official servers. If anyone else shares the emu with people that wants to play it for free its his problem, not yours ;)
I have watching the progress and im surprised it this far in develment. For those who dont have a complete gw.dat file there is a way to download the entire file but I will not post the method unless its really needed. I am surprised ANET is interested in the emu lol. Keep up the amazing work and I have GW Nightfall and Prophecies CE but stopped playing because I have dial up and dislike downloading the updates.
ive never playeed this game but it gottabe pretty darn good for someone to work this hard on there own :)
