! A hobbyist' MMO, looking for peep

Ladies and gentlemen! I present you ProjectX, what it is?

Its a framework i am creating, before making a prototype game.

It is a total conversion of a FPS/STRATEGY/MULTIPLAYER 3D Game engine(NeoAxis) to MMO, i had to rewrite everything, though the project is paused, since i am waiting for an advanced physics system to implement on my custom server implementation.

Our resources are limited, 2 dedicated servers and an engine license.

We are a small team of

    1. All rounder programmer & project manager (me)
    1. Hybrid programmer - world builder.
    2. World builders
    1. 3d Modeller & world builder
    1. Animator

We are in need of several programmers to work with me, we will start everything from scratch at 2013. Meanwhile we are experimenting and working on the current Release.

Keep in mind that we are hobbyists but we ultimately want to do something for experience and why not put something it into our CV. I have personally learned loads of things about game development just by working in all the aspects of the engine on my own from UI to networking and i consider this project to be for me a valuable asset for future, regardless if its ever completed or not.

    Some requirements:

You don't have to work every day or even every week, you aren't paid you work when ever you like.

    -Ideal requirements
*Know basic Entity relation diagrams and some UML (optional but good).
*Organized, we will work with Task assignment.
*C# OOP and AOP (aspect oriented) knowledge and software engineering design patterns such as Singleton (Average at least).
*C Minimum knowledge is always a plus.
*Networking in theory and Physics as well as networking physics is a plus too.

    -Minimum
*Just programming with any Object oriented language

Our engine is basically working like that:

3d graphics, sound etc etc are in C++ (Ogre3d etc) and C# is used to script/create the game logic.

If it's a learning project, then that's great!
Just a tip though, if you guys are looking for creating a serious game, don't try to make a MMO, and don't use Ogre, use a finished engine.

But as you said it's a learning project, then that sounds great! :) Good luck!

Well Ogre3d IS great engine and we are using a finished Engine which includes ogre, NeoAxis.... NeoAxis Game Engine - Development Tool for 3D Simulations, Visualizations and Games there are several nice steam titles released with it. And there are several other MMOs under construction with it. It gives us all the tools we need, i am already experimenting with Nvidia Physx.

The truth is that with the tools you get you can make a world graphically similar to elder scrolls though it would need a lot of polishing, shadows etc.

    http://www.neoaxis.com/images/1_3_an...areManager.jpg <- quite nice looking

The only problem is that it doesn't have a working MMO example which i have made to a point in a small period of time :P, the only problem is that i was programming everything and this drained me.

The framework is a learning project but it is also a hidden wish to do it more seriously, and launch a kickstarter.net funding, depends on how we are going i will change the status of the project and to be honest with out any resources it would be irresponsible to say "hey we are making a serious game".

And the reason we are making a MMO is because we got a guy who's studing writing in University and he made a huge script of unimaginable things haha, not to mention we are all MMO lovers.

Ah allright, didn't know that you were using a game engine, I was assuming that you were putting together your own game engine using ogre as your graphics engine.

In that case, even better! :)

This looks nice. However, I don't think a "hobbyist" MMO is realistic, due to the fact that MMO stands for MASSIVELY multiplayer online (game). You can't make and maintain a massive game community with a small team of hobbyists. Attempting to do so would lead to the disappointment of players that trust you to actively maintain the game.

The core aspects(such as economy) of an MMO require a large player base. How do you think you're going to get a large player base without a lot of expensive advertising?

Maybe a FPS game would be a better start. I'm not trying to be a "downer" I just don't want you to get your hopes up like so many others have about developing MMOs.
