A bit slow answer: you can use default launcher.
You can customize display page, downloaded files etc.
For ex., I had send patches in sfx archive(self-unpacking) and just unpack it to data folder instead of modifying fdbs.
If you made modification to the FDB Files with the FDB Editor Munk made those mods are should be in the data folder on both client and server, if you want your mates to have the mods you make email em the files and get them to put them in the data folder too.
As for doing this automatically, you need a web server running with the correct paths to the files needed for the launcher to find, but for the launcher to know which url to access you need to modify the update.inf
There is a few steps involved and ultimately a waste of time when you can just email them to mates, or put the files on your own web server and tell em download them.
well when i edit update.inf to download/check version off my server i keep getting error "Cant download version.txt" etc i put version.txt file in web directory "/patch/version.txt" also tried /patch/index.html with version info inside and tried patch.txt and now im so confused...
EDIT: NEVERMIND FIXED IT, But now i have a new error and i can't get it to work "ERROR can't download ClientUpdate.zip" how to fix? i got directory setup with ClientUpdate.zip in there

As I remember, usually it means wrong path. Try to check it carefully.
