I guess that most server's require no graphical processing. Most processors and motherboards have a inbuilt gpu of a sort for a basic desktop usage.

Go for 8GB of ram straight away since its cheap, buy something that is not expensive (200-300eu total) and if you have fun with it and the server cannot support the load anymore then upgrade it, you might as well need to upgrade your connection bandwidth.

Getting ddosed is a high risk and a protection costs quite a lot. Your ISP probably wont like it if their a++ gets stuffed by a big flood.

I doubt anyone will ddos a free home server with a capacity for only 20-30 people.

After all this you might want to move away from local home hosting to pay some pro hosting company +protection and ask for donations.

if in dedicated:
- Ram: 2g up
- Processor: 3.0 up

if you make homemade
- RAM: 4g up (up to 1.5g leaves you in vbox)
- Processor: quadecore up, believe teh one dualcore work
