If it's a predefined structure of items why not do something like Struct { Int itemCount; Item* Items; } itemContainer, Struct { Int id; ...... } Item; That way you can just memcpy the bytes from the file to an allocated chunk of memory and away you go? Sorry for the typos and rough examples...

If your storing passwords don't use sha1 use something like bcrypt or php's password_ functions they even produce backwards compatible libraries! It's more secure and in my opinion better practice 4

Use an extra CSS file in development and minify and compress them into one file for production? Solves that problem 4
