Run a Server On Linux?

Hello!

I have looked around and found nothing of worth that answers this question. Is there a way, or is there a server out there that is compatible and able to run on Linux?

I know on Linux you can use Wine or whatever its called to run windows applications, im not sure if it will work with a server that requires a connection with a database.

Java based server are compatible, but with c# servers, you can use Mono ;)
