End of Shockwave

So guys, sad times for all of us who have played/love(d) oldschool servers.

I've noticed that Chrome is stopping to allow Shockwave, sure, you can re-enable in chrome:plugins, and later installing...

It was harder for people come to very old retros, but now what? No new people are going to use Shockwave. Is this the death of hotels with old school?

The death happened already, we all know it, flash is way more easy to use (even being slowly depreacated), and it's already built-in the browsers. So shockwave servers will decease to exist? Of course, developers would always play them with private local servers (installing older browser versions or doing some hax0r to re-enable on browser), but how about the user base (even though it was praticly inexistant, it had some users. There was an hotel, not so long ago (about 5 months ago), which had about 15-20 onlines (v26)).

What do you guys think about it? Oldschool is already dead and should remain that way or what?

Shockwave is being deprecated because Google, like many other companies, have started to remove NPAPI-related code from their codebases.

Sure, I love old school and it's definitely going to be missed, but we can't keep sticking to the past, we need to move on eventually!

I think Habbo in general is dead.

But the point is that now Chrome does not allow it at all (without tweaking your settings), even if you have installed it.

I think so too. Habbo had a lot of users a few years ago, not only the official Habbo servers itself but also the retro community. Now they've merged hotels together because they don't have enough users on seperate servers (.com, .co.uk etc.) and shut down others. They're losing money. Lots of people in the retro community have left, there's too many private servers but not enough people to play on them. The retro community relies on the official Habbo servers as we are basically emulating them instead of going our own ways to create something completely new.

However, if Habbo ever closes down, there's a chance lots of people (who liked and played on the 'real' Habbo) will turn to retros. But there's also a chance that the retro community will die out too.

And let's not forget about the time when Hamachi was required for a lot of retros because people didn't know how to portforward, and people couldn't afford a VPS to keep their retro running 24/7. We've come a long way!

I won't forget hosting my shitty Debbo emu on my laptop through wifi and ADSL connection. It was only online a few hours a day :')

@maritnmine You remember me great times when I was a little kid and this was an awesome world for me to discover. There was one moment with my 1st ADSL Router I tried to open my Retro but I had some troubles with ports so one day I tried it in a PC of the nursing home of my grandmother (Internet by Modem, static IP) and everything was succesful, when I advertised it in HabboLibre in 1 hour +50 people came and we had fun 2 days (till the administrators of the nursing home powered off the PC xD).

Can also remember my pride when I could start my 1st USA111 Retro with Hamachi... awesome.

The best part with my home-hosting was that my router randomly cut off connections running on port 21. The server threw an exception so I thought there was an issue with the socket. After a few months, I had learned how to code and I had also discovered at that time that it was the router, not the socket that was the issue. Man, I won't forget that very moment when I understood objects. It was like discovering reading all over again.

Back on-topic:
Shockwave has been dead for like 4 years now? I feel that the slowpoke meme would be appropriate.

I agree, shockwave is dead for a long time now. Still, we could always get and install shockwave and play with friends, now it's harder. I think only people with extreme "need" to play old versions would download it. Not players tho :(:

Shockwave works on Opera and Mozilla.
