download photoshop and the nvidia dds plugin then open the wm exportet map in ps and save it as .dds file 32bbp so far as i know
use the Smooth feature of the Studio
You got to set the level settings and also work out some kinks in world machine i had the same terrain problem you're having right now. And lejo if he did that whats the point as even his mountains have points so if he smoothed all the terrain the mountains he did this for will look like giant circles created in the studio so be pointless to even use a heightmap.
Anyways... i myself still am slightly experiencing that problem you are i did get past it a few days ago but forgot what i did.... if i re-figure it out ill tell you how and or make a tutorial on it.

And is that heightmap one you found online or aftermaths looking at textured images looks like aftermath :) also make sure you set the approx km in width/height.
