Amazing Ps3 News Flash!

The story is more than one page, behold!
key points:

• PS3 will have online service that goes beyond xbox live
• PS3 will be a DVR
• It will connect with psp
• There are alot of games being worked on for it right now in the US (alot more then what people know about)
• The final ps3 dev kit is alot faster than they thought (according to the developer)
• The ps3 will have an itunes type service to let you download HI DEF movies, music, etc
• The Ps3 will take the media center functionality the 360 has even further

I have the xbox 360. When I heard ps3 is gonna have a online system like xbox live. I said Im proably gona sell my xbox. The only reason I got it was for the online play, and the pc ports. But playstation pretty much has me now, just speaking though. Its possible that ps3 is nothing...just gotta wait till it comes out :(.

how so? soon enough a normal pc will be just as good...

what they put into a console is always gonna be aviable on a pc scale, makes more buisness sence, not every1 games yaknow :P

im still not that intrested in ps3, it does nothing thats really new...

ps3 will be cheaper than a hd dvr, and definately cheaper than a gaming computer at those standards until maybe 4 years from the day it will be released.

I am highly skeptical of this report, especially since it is not an 'official' report. When I see that sony has officially said this, then I can start to believe them, sort of; anyone remember what they said about the Playstation 2? I believe the Playstation 3 will be a pinch better than the Xbox 360.

What ever happened to the Video Game console?
The PS3 already has too much crap. Nintendo still has the right idea regarding what a video game console is: a console that plays video games.
Sony's once again using a marketting technique it used with the original playstation: BIG NUMBERS. Sony started the whole "tons of crappy low budget games to boost game library numbers". They always make the amount of crap their stuff has their selling point, instead of the device's capabilities. What the hell would we need a music store service on a PS3 for? Isn't that what we have computers for? Has Sony learned nothing? I remember when they removed the firewire ports from the PS2 because no one was using them. They wasted lots of money putting those ports in the system, and now they're going to be adding more and more crap people are probably not going to use in the PS3?

Now, back to my claim that Sony uses quantity as their selling point. I remember when the "Cell" was first announced. The emphasis was on the number of cores it had and the speed each core ran at. Now, most people who have no knowledge of how processors work (which is the majority) would assume that "# Of Cores x Speed per core = total speed", which is incorrect; however, as Intel has proven many times before, the words "Gigahertz" and "Multi-core" make people think "Oooo, this runs faster than that other product". In actuality, because the cell has so many cores, the developers will have to do some extra work making those cores work together. Creating applications that support symmetric multi-processing (multiple-processor/multiple-core/hyperthreading) is a bit complicated. Now, (put what was it, 7 or 8 or something?) cores into that equation, and what you've got is something that'll take a huge amount of coding to accomodate. Not to mention that the cell is extremely new, which means that developers will have to become familiar with it and its quirks. If games aren't programmed efficiently for the Cell, they could actually turn out SLOWER than the other systems. Due to the new processor design and the time developers will need to really become familiar with the new architecture, I believe that the PS3 will take the longest of the three next-gen systems to show its full potential.
One more thing to add about the cell being new: All processor architectures act differently under high load. No amount of testing Sony and its partners have done on the Cell can truly show what the minds of the developers can do to the processor. Sony is taking a HUGE gamble by going with both a new processor architecture as well as a new storage medium.

Damn Robert I'm like the only other person who wants the Rev :(. Imo like 1up.com said, playing an FPS on the Rev and then switching over to another console....it'd feel like crap

i believe all this is crap all these thigs there promised. your going to expect to pay in the regions of over £400. they have put way too much into it. i love to see the day that this becomes reality.

Of course you're right about both areas of conflict. Though, I doubt any company will release a product that is 'ineffecient.' Hopefully this will make developers take their time and cut down on string errors and soft code. We could also help for better quality models, which the Xbox 360 neglected with all their launch titles. I am an Xbox 360 fan, but I am neutral in my opinions; so, please don't think I am unduely representing either system.
