[Release]City Of Heroes/City Of Villains Source Code [NCSOFT FINAL VERSION]
Hello,
City Of Heroes/City Of Villains full source code was released on COH discord server by the owner (Leandro) of the secret private server called (SCORE). This is the full source code of City of Heros, the game was developed in the past by Cryptic Studios, then NCSOFT took over the code. This code is issue 24, the version of the game before shutting down.
What is COH:
City of Heroes (CoH) was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Cryptic Studios and published by NCSOFT. The game was launched in North America on April 27, 2004, and in Europe by NCsoft Europe on February 4, 2005, with English, German and French servers. Twenty-three free major updates for City of Heroes were released before its shutdown. The final live update, "Where Shadows Lie", was released on May 31, 2012. On August 31, 2012, NCsoft terminated its Paragon Studios development team, ending all production on City of Heroes[1] with the last day of services on November 30, 2012.[2]
What happened ?
The complete source code along with user informations was copied and leaked by a dev to a guy in Argentinia.
And this guy ran a secret City of Heroes private server that was fully functional. They even got all the stuff that was in development and finished it, they have new powersets and content.
But it gets a bit spicier. The guy who ran the server was a head mod of the City of Heroes reddit and suppressed any discussion of private servers while at the same time stating that private servers would be impossible.
And apparently he was also involved in a project that was attempting to create a private server and took many donations of fans for that. All the while having a fully functional private server he and his clique played on for the last 6 years. They even released a version of the game called "Paragon Chat" where you could basically only walk around and chat with people as their latest development.
The paragon chat and the functioning private server files were downloaded with the same launcher.
Apparently even all Characters from the live servers are still there and you can continue to play them. There may even be personal information in the leaked database, but it was not released.

-Tequila client will work with this? its the only Issue 24 what i can obtain... I have a boxed version but that is only issue 12-15 with COV but no rogue island...

Dude, this is amazing. I never played CoH but it seems like one of those games where anyone who played it became a super fan lol. I will definitely be digging into these files, thanks for sharing.

i dont exactly know what you mean there. The code requires __nop(); which was added in SP1, so you need to install VS2005 and then the SP1 Update i posted above

Client compiled fine on my Win10 machine. Unfortunately the server isnt compiling as fine, since it gets caught on the mssql :S

Client can be run by using this command line:

You can just type something else there and it should work without training shard

i would say upload both for the community, also the .piggs files in the client can be used for the server as assets, the database gets build by the db server once its initialize

You need to put it together from various sources, clients, bins ect ,but i guess it will work, and it is not a waste of time, becouse it is more than we had in 9 years since the game has stopped, and so if it even might incomplete, this is a very good base of making a server from it. it is a DEVELOPER community. not an out-of-the-box-works community...

Theoretically you could create those. All the information are in the source, but its a heck of a lot of work AND it requires manually digging around the src which frankly I dont want to invest.

You're using VS 2010 are you not?

I'm not changing my default environment for other projects, for this particular project.
"In case" someone is running at the same version of SDK / VS (with their specific updates) that I am and run into the error.
It's available. Nothing more or less. :0)

I'm not. I'm using VS2005 which compiled without any issues except for a minor include missing for __RPC
Was just curious since I didnt have to do any fixing except for that include thingy. And I'm on win7 sdk aswell.

Heh, that one has sure been kept on the down low on the Discord, at best my coding is around PHP so not really got anything to contribute but been interesting to keep tabs on and missed this info, guess that is for the best though, can't imagine it be great for the whole world to know there is even more out there, at this time anyway.

So basicly, what we got here publicly is almost nothing...?(Considering the size of the serversource for the exe's and some bin files... and the lack of the server side files? Like models, DEF files, database textures, patcher updater ect ect?) I mean by what you shared here...OR it has almost all server side things they are just this small? Considering that this sources are... for a Cryptic-engine.

I smell source back-holding... or they will surely relasing the whole thing? They are already having a test server if i saw correctly... (I am just asking this becouse there was examples in the past that similar cases the source was not shared, or it was held back becouse.... reasons... so dont be offended please!) So in some point there will be a full fledge source relase or its just an other group who are willing to let only to host the server by themselves?

This is just bullshit. I dont want to join them just to freakin make a local server and fuck around on the server. Im not into this game, and frankly I dont care about their server. So we got an half-assed, not working, broken piece of the puzzle so that we want to make a server and then join those non-human things in their server? Did I get this correctly? That is asshole tactic no. 1

@GigaToni: I dont know of the completion of their server code, but they said they have a 188GB stuff... we have ~500 MB... and some bin files. If i am assuming from comparing to STO/NWO it is not a quarter enought... there are no resource files relased.
And; Yes we would like a server like STO/NWO or similar to play around with i dont need an other public server that will be shut down by ncsoft or by owner when they got bored from it...
Of course if they are saying that they will relase it after DB fix it is allright. Ill be patient... This is a good game, i did tried their servers it is working like the original back in the days, and they are fixing the npc's and missing things with lightspeed, but please... if you are people done(and fast before any lawsuits) please share with us the whole thing!!!

Well, the guy who owned the pserver for 6 years he got doxxed thats why the first src was was dropped on the discord, he even received threats and pictures from outside his house if he didnt release the src. He actually did. the released code here is i24, the guy him self didnt have the .bins and .pigs that matches this source code. There wasnt i25 from the developer he developed that him self with his team, he dont want to release the currently working i25 because he doesnt wanna expose the name of the people worked on it. Further more 2 days ago when the 188gb archive dropped, it was dropped to him, There are even a team that scrabbing the archive to get released. there are few coders channel that shows only to whoever in the discord role. there are alot of people is still working. I dont care acutally if the data gets scrabbed or not or even released. what i mean is who the hell cares about the devs emails or w/e, comparing the amount of srcs that was released here it almost contains sensitive information and we dont even care about them. I think the guy Leo who owns the pserver he doesnt want what happened to him, to happen to the devs if there are sensitive information in the archive. I didnt get it my self nor im one of the scrabbers. I have friends scrabbing also they are from RZ here but thats how they guy him self wants everything to work. Give it time, everything will be shared the coders are still trying to figure out the .bins structures because they dont have it. so no map server.

Well if that is the case it is working becouse 14000 people are playing right now XD By the way I am sensierly hoping that is not the case. That's my worse fears. In time there will be all revealed, but if that is the case i will still not join up to play with it... I want a server like nwo. Not to play on someone's server and paying for him all microtransactions and all...

Looks like NCSoft brought the hammer down on the SCORE Server that was being hosted and a lot of people are going dark. Dunno if they're gonna release that 188GB leak now.

Yeah who knows tbh. Sounds like they are running off with the donations too. The whole thing just seems... sketchy lol. I really hope one of the people with access still choose to dump the archive but my gut feeling is that they will disappear and some new server will magically appear in a few months.
They drew way too much attention to that discord if Im being honest.

Also they posted a tutorial:
1. Get MSSQL setup, run setup schemas and remove the bad paths to execute.
2. Setup configs with NoAuthServer 1, unless you wanna deal with doing manual table editing for Auth Server
3. Put client pigg files in your bin directory, basically copy-paste /piggs/ in, do not unpack.
4. Put unpacked server bin files in /data/ under your bin directory with exes, should end up near your templates, etc. if you follow the directory tree.
5. Setup client shortcut with -db [ip] -project coh -noverify
6. Assuming you're building your own binaries, patch dbserver to remove version check in login, patch container_data.c on line 117 to a "goto failed;" instead of the return 0 and compile
7. Remainder is config editing and having the maps.db and other shit, which I'm not going into rn

Time will tell, but this kinda stuff always makes me roll my eyes because who really knows what is ever happening in these overnight dev teams lol.

The idea of building a private server for this game has been on my mind for years. Coh/cov has been an important game in my childhood playing with my friends and little brother who now has sadly passed away. It has great emotional value to me.
These resources give me the motivation to invest and create a piece of software to relive one of the most fun games I played.
I'm a professional software developer for years with gamedev experience and we are gonna make this happen!

I swear there must be some math equation that states more drama = better releases lol
As an on topic update, at least one person has made it in game so far I think. He had to do a lot of finnagling and went to sleep shortly after getting it but some of his troubleshooting was posted in the coding discussion channel. I think he was only using files publically available also.
Edit: He also isnt doing the janky 2x physical server nonsense they were doing for the live realm, his is all localhost.

'Morning :D Oh i m always amazed by the community :D This game means a lot of me too... ill start to host the torrent and share rightnow. I hope there is a chance to play this with my friends. I would becalm with a I24 server... or any... just work XD
Just to know people:Even if NCSOFT gets after the guy who hosted the server; the code is out there. It cannot be stopped. :D XD Not anymore. Sooner or later any of those people who downloaded it will make an easily usable version from the suorce and anyone will be able to host this on his own. I am eagerly waiting on any update on this :D
In the same time: I dont get this new people's stupidity from ncsoft's side. They are not making money from it. THey event dont care that there is a more thousand people who would want this... I get it they have the rights... ok. But who cares if they are abandoned the thing? And the server's makers are still not making money from it(not yet anyway...) So why they dont let publicly avaliable once they are "milked the cows" ?
Thats grind my gears... Ncsoft is soo stupid. Look at Blizzards private wow servers... they are not donig anything about the private servers, and they have that much money; that i guess they are working on diamond studded golden chairs in the office... Private servers are free advertisements for them... for any mmo... And for all of those people who just playing on the private one and not willing to buy any from the original: they not gonna do it anyway either becouse they are cannot buy it or they dont want to pay for something like this... but using it no one's financial intrests are not hurts...
For example: I bought the game in the golden times, for up today i have the original boxed version of COH/COV issue 14. They shut the server, and i can make a doorstop from my dvdcase... But now... not anymore XD So: What now? I payed for something what i dont get anymore i hade a subscription and all and they just shut it down... I would NEVER buy anything from ncsoft becouse of this case. I will host anything i can for my own entertainment or few friends. But i would NEVER pay for COH again if they would brought back in any way...
OKOK sorry for offtopic, i am done.
Also @GigaToni if what they saying on discord is true, the server could be functional with just about the publicly avaliable resources :D(But as i see you might not able to customise THAT much becouse of the binaries...) I am seeding this stuff people, so if anyone needs grab it.

Whatever.... for example me and pretty much other people have Neverwinter and Star Trek online source code and no one hurts by that... I think COH will be the same situation. I usually uses with my friends if we are not needed then we are shutting it down. Let to escalate this whole situation :D then well see.
