Lol had the same problem. I knew this girl for like 13 years and we were best friends but i was crazy about her and well yea friendships barely ever work out as relationships. We both really liked eachother but its too damn awkward and we both have seperate "lovers" and are still best buddies and with firends thats the most it goes. I did ask her if we could be "friends with benefits" and all im got was a big slap and she was pissed at me but like msot good firends we settled it pretty quick. Anyway point is if you guys are good firends it probably won't work out in a relationship.

yeah if you get turned down it's no biggie imo. Just try not to think about the same feeling everytime you "feel" like she's the one, yet you know it's not true love.

If I may be so bold as to post a few tips:
1. Do NOT be a desperate lap-dog!
Girls love it when you are nice to them. Which is exactly why you shouldn't. Be their friend, talk with them a lot, help them move, etc and before you know it she sees you as a 'good friend'. This can be fun, but it will be almost impossible to extand that into a sexual relationship.
Moreso, if you do stuff for a woman you give of the signal you want her and are prepared to do anything to get her. Though some women find that romantic and cute, most find it boring - remember, it sounds so very natural that almost every man out there tries it, meaning any girl can spot it from a mile and has had it happen to her so often she probably knows better what you will be prepared to do for her then you do yourself. Ofcourse most women will deny this, but it is actually better to ignore them most of the time. Women HATE it when a man doesn't appear to be interested in them and most find this unexplainably extremely attractive.
2. Do NOT open the conversation!
As a rule of thumb do I NEVER start talking to a girl on MSN I like. The trick is into getting them to talk to you and there are several techniques for this. Most effective is to get to know a bit about her, find out what she likes and then use this in your nickname or description. For example, say you fancy a girl that loves Star Wars movies (he, I know they exist! ;)) set as nickname '[Your name] - Anybody feel like watching 'The Empire Strikes Back' tonight?' - this gives her an excuse to talk to you, as well as drawing her attention towards the fact that you share certain interests. Just make sure your MSN / AOL / whatever status is set to 'online', not busy or away, when she is online. To get extra attention you could even set your status to offline while she is online then come back online a moment later - this will trigger a popup on her screen with your nickname, usefull for when she has other things drawing her attention away from her IM list.
Do not worry if she doesn't start talking to you and DO NOT spam her with 'comes online' messages, they just anoy people. Any girl that at least slightly likes you will respond to this technique (unless they are really bussy, in which case you couldn't have had a long conversation with her anyway) sooner or later. Just make sure to not use the same nickname too often.
2.b - In a bar / at a party / etc
I know most of you are rather young still, yet there are probably enough occasions where you meet her socially. Though a little attention is allowed, basicly the same rules as above apply here.
Most importantly: do not stare at her. Do not show a large amount of interest whatsoever. Make sure you have a few friends to talk to and a drink in your hand (because when she starts talking to you you'll otherwise have no idea of where to put your hands) and most of all: be relaxed - they can sense fear ;). Make sure you're in her neighboorhood without actually standing with your face towards her. Most party's are dynamic, meaning a group of people that are talking will disband after a while and people find a new group to join. Make sure there is room next to you when this happens to her group, but do not walk up to her when she is alone - not unless you are very confident you'll be able to make her laugh on your own yet.
When you've tried this method for an hour or so and she still hasn't talked to you it may be time to take a bit of action yourself. The important thing here is to act like you're not acting, be friendly without actually being her lapdog and in no way show her you want her. Instead, walk up to her if she's alone / not talking, make a few comments, be sure to smile and look relaxed and fun to be with, then walk away. Go talk to your friends and make sure to appear to be having a great time. Now she has nobody to talk to (seeing how she was talking to you) and she sees you are fun to be around - if you have done this right and she IS interested in you she will most likely follow you to the group of people you are now talking to and stay in your vicinity.
3. Okay, she's interested, now what?
You have succesfully completed the staps under 2, the girl you want has come up to you to talk to you, if you haven't screwed up already you two are having a good time and most people around you have moved on to talk to someone else. Good for you!
At this point there are several techniques possible, but what works best for you only you can tell. Personally at this point I like to invite them to do something together that isn't per se romantic or for lovers only, yet sets an romantic atmosphere. My favourite is to ask her to come outside for some fresh air or a walk in the moonlight, or go to another bar thats more fun. Again, be carefull this comes over as something YOU want, and she is ALLOWED to join you, if she wants to. Say something along the lines of 'Hey, I need some fresh air, want to go outside for a bit?' or 'I think I've seen enough here, I'm off for this great place a few streets away. Care to join me?'.
4. She wants you, you've got her for yourself, its almost time for the final step!
If you still haven't screwed up yet there might be hope for you! At this point its obvious she likes you (a lot probably), seeing how she left her friends just to be with you. If you've done your job she's already used to you touching her (no you pervert, in a friendly way, a tickle or a nudge when she makes fun of you, a hand on her shoulder when you're opening the door for her, etc) so she won't object to you putting your arm around her. She'll most likely react by looking at you, and this is the crucial moment. Do not look away, but instead keep gazing into her beautifull deap [blue / green / brown / etc] eyes. If she is still young enough to fall for the old romantic tricks you could tell her she has very beautifull eyes - just make it sound like a pure objective observation, not like you're a second shakespear - you're not. I write pretty good poetry and still I'm not. Hell, Shakespear himself probably wasn't when wooing a lady ;)
5. Yay! Actually kissing!
If you were walking at this point, stop, and turn your body so you're facing her. Let your arm slide down a bit so you're holding her upperarm and use your other hand to gently caress her face, what works best in my experience is to move her hair away from her eyes ending up with your hand on the side of her head. If she moves away at this point you have regretfully failed to impress her enough. If she doesn't, move your head closer to hers, without turning it, untill you are about nose-to-nose with her. She'll probably start breathing heavier and fast at this point, which is as good a sign as any that you should right then and there kiss her the best you can - though remember, even the best kissers in the world need a bit of time before they know what their partner want and you're probably closer to being one of the worst so NEVER start french-kissing her straight away. Kiss her on the lips, carefully, and a few times more if she doesn't object. Only when she opens her mouth more is it time to try your best - and remember, nobody likes a machine-drill in their mouths, be gentle ;)
Disclaimer!
Remember, this is only 1 technique and it will only work on 1 kind of girl. I happen to like this one kind of girl so its the best technique for me, but that doesn't mean it will work for 'your' kind of girl as well. In any case ignoring them and letting them come to you works on just about every girl out there (except the REALLY naief / young ones who are to scared to talk to a guy they like, but girls go into this whole business a lot sooner then most boys, so if she's your age she probably already has a lot more experience then you do).
Also, your attitude plays a very important role in this. If you're a desperate nerd and let it show, you're very lickely to get bitchslapped if you try anything. If you are very nervous and stutter when you talk to her the first time she'll probably not talk to you again. If you look like just any other guy and have no way of showing you're special, the same.
What works for me is being the 'intelligent, sophisticated relaxed alto guy': I wear black clothes, punk-trousers, a good fitting bandshirt (fitting into an L is NOT something to be proud of. We all want to be big, but the best way is to wear stuff thats only just big enough. I wear M's, medium, whilst I'm 1.88m and pretty broad around the shoulders - I've seen people with my stature wearing XL's and looking like a midget in a giants clothes), sometimes a few spikes here and there and I used to have my hair painted black. I don't smoke, yet I don't say no to a good joint either. I'm funny without actually being a clown (important that! Girls like the clown-type that makes fun of himself and others regularly, but they'll NEVER date him!), relaxed without coming off as someone who's in need of his pension. I'm a good listener without actually being quiet as hell. Dark and mysterious without actually being a gothic, etc. Apart from that I speak 4 languages, study astrophysics, won several cocktail / bar contests and have been to more festivals and concerts then most people do in their entire life - its stuff like that which, when brought the right way, shows a girl that you're different, special, not just any guy.
'Girl'-types
The girls I aim for are usually a bit shy, naturally beautifull without actually being a 'hot-babe with huge tits'. As far as I can tell they like me because they think their lifes are pretty boring, they never went out much and I'm excited to be with. I'd say about 60% of all girls fall into this group, so unfortunately for you, there are also enough girls that want most of all boredom, they usually date the kind of guy that has a good job or is a good study and comes off as though he could've been their father - which is closer to the truth then you might think. You'll need a totally different approach for this kind'a girl, and I won't be able to help you out there much. Maybe even just being very honoust works in this case, who knows? Though truth be told, in my experience only ~10% of all girls fall into that catagory.
Then there is the catagory of women that KNOW what men want and know they want it as well. They have enough experience to see trough the whole 'I don't want you' act and you'd better be damn cool if you want them to notice you. Again, I can't give you advice on these women, though I've seen a few pages on the internet from men that can :) Depends on your location, but I'd say about 20% fit in here.
Last catagory I can think of are the 'breezersluts' as we call them. I doubt you'll need more advice then 'give them alcohol, lots of it, then have sex with them in your car'. Seems to work for a lot of desperate men out there, though you'll never catch me with one.
