I'm serious, I'm sick of new press and what not saying how rpg's of the mmo format are "strategical" when there is no apparent use of thought when pressing one or two buttons to kill something. What's up with that?

Dude, think of what you're saying ;).
You're used to "strategy" games being like Civilization....but hey, based on what you said, i dont see how clicking the mouse is strategical either.
MMORPGs are strategical when it comes to being the best, if you're playing "for fun" you'll never get to see the strategical side of most MMORPGs. People who play MMORPGs to be the best...or well to be more clear, people who play MMORPGs for a living, they have to plan every day out, so that every action is executed with the most efficiency as possible. If you look at the "Top" players in any MMORPG, you'll see that they find a way to gain an edge before everyone, they find all the loop holes and they find all the strategies to approaching new and hard areas without wasting as much time as the developers meant for them to waste.
Every MMORPG is strategic in some way, some more than others. Also most MMORPGs include ways for "teams" of players to be assembled with the same common cause (again some more than others).
So yea i agree with you, that grinding is not really strategic, if you already know the Ins and Outs of the place you're grinding and you have the stuff for it. But the fact is, you prolly planned atleast a month or two to be where you are...doing what you're doing...that is ofcoarse if you ever experienced true...grind ~.~ (play some korean mmorpgs, those koreans are crazy when it comes to making games with insane grinds).
But yea....pressing buttons doesnt sound strategic, but planning where and how to press them, with what conditions etc, thats strategy (in essence, going by what i said, every single game is to some point strategic, unless the developers make only 1 way to advance, which they usually dont so yea).
It all depends on how long you spend. No matter what if a person plays 24/7 from the first day the game comes out he will be good.Quote:

Guild wars and such [not the game...] needs strategy [well Logic anyway =p]?
Or were you referring to against mobs?
Play FFXI, you have to always prepare before fighting something and there is alot more strategy involved.
As said above, in guildwars when you get far in the game it requirs strategy, e.g who attacks the boss first, who has res etc
I guess youve never played Eve Online. Now THAT is a strategic game.
If you want a game thats strategic you should try the free trial, but the learning curve on eve is massive. It takes a few months to get remotely good on it, and years to get really great :)
I play EVE ^.^;;. The learning curve is around 2-3 weeks, not really months (it really depends on if you're out to take more risks or not, or if you ask around about stuff). EVE is definately strategy through and through, from the way you fit ships, to the way you do skills to...well PvP (also even PvE is strategic).
Also GW is one thats a very strategic game, as far as equipping skills n stuff (theres so many =/).
But yea there are strategic aspects to pretty much any game, or atleast any fun game.
There are quite a few mmorpg/strategy games but I forgot there names they are all in 2d aswell ^^ I never seen 1 in 3d if I come across 1 ill pm you it ;)
MMORPGs involve strategy especially when you interact with other players. Pressing two buttons won't always outsmart an actual human player.
'Strategical' lmfao.
Here's my pitch, "Ghost recon online: With added stratergy"
sometimes I wonder why my game pitches never make it to market.
EvE is one hell of a strategical MMO, I quit in the first hour, but it looked hard.
EVE is too friggin hard to get to grips with - and it doesn't help when your computer struggles to run it.... :D
its just so damn boring, mine, mine, mine, sell, mine, mine... oo whats this kill? no just a big asteroid... mine, mine, mine.
