Face of Mankind is a MMORPG(MMOFPS). It is set in the distant future where multinational companies are struggling to rule the race of Mankind. You play your own part in this story driven game. You can either play a small part where you are an ordinary police officer or soldier, or you could strive to become a legendary figure for other
players to look up to. Take a chance where YOU are the game...

The plot is constantly evolving, with new missions created constantly. The skill and luck of the players from rival factions change the balance of power. High ranked players create missions which are split and handed down through the hierarchy. The objective of the game is to evolve your character to its ultimate potential, whether that is the accumulation of wealth, power, social status or all three.

Face of Mankind has 8 factions, which make up the fabric of the society. Each Faction can bring a different atmosphere to the game whether by war, control of a colony and its mines or undermining prices on the market. Factions are led by a leader who uses their abilities to take colonies, make deals with other factions to help control the market or hire out as mercenaries. Individually players are citizens of the Global Dominion, banded together in their factions they become a force to fear.

The story background

By the end of the 22nd century, the overcrowding of Earth’s cities, the growing drain on natural resources, and the memories of recent violence caused mankind to desire new and remote locations to start their lives over again. The International Space Administration’s colonization efforts provided the perfect solution – distant havens for hundreds of thousands of Earth’s citizens to take up residence. However, as colonization efforts spread and the Vortex-Net brought humanity to the stars in ever-greater numbers, mankind’s footprint became more noticeable on a galactic scale. By the mid-24th century Earth’s spreading population had become obvious, attracting the attention of a very hostile and aggressive alien race.

Contact with the initial interstellar colonies was lost, and special task forces were established and sent out to investigate – and if necessary exterminate – the hostile species presumed responsible. Many of these soldiers were never heard from again – the new enemy proved to be exceptionally resilient and much faster than mankind’s forces were prepared for.

Meanwhile, in the late 24th century on Earth, life carries on in a manner that mankind has become accustomed to over hundreds of years. People continue trading, cheating, stealing and fighting with each other over territorial and production control. The Vortex-Net has made possible nearly instantaneous travel between distant locations, increasing traffic and trade between the thriving cities around the globe, and the globalization of currency has made economic competition a more transparent and universal paradigm.

Preparing for action at Aurelia The Global Dominion is barely able to maintain a fair and democratic system because of corruption, bribery and in-fighting among the many factions and splinter groups. Maintaining constant control and unity of governance requires most of the Global Dominion’s time and effort as a governing body. Clans are being formed that are creating their own systems within the system – effectively taking various economic aspects of society into their own hands. They are establishing independent mercenary troops in an effort to free the colonies from the alien occupation, seeing the imminent benefit if they can claim them under their own sovereign governance. The clans are in constant competition with one another, sending spies and agents into the other organizations to observe their progress and to gather information that might give them the upper hand.

As the people get information about the distant war, many are beginning to fear an eventual spread of the conflict to Earth itself. Brave men and women are venturing into battle to protect the future of humanity, each accompanied by only their destiny as they find their way in this dystopian world. Will it be the drive toward corporate profit, a clan’s new idealism, or the iron hand of law and order that proves itself to be true Face of Mankind? Only time will tell...

Factions:

Freedom Defence Corps (FDC)
In 2073 Regular military forces of all former Terran nations were consolidated into a single organization, forming the Freedom Defense Corps (F.D.C.). It was and still is the task of the F.D.C. to protect all inhabitants of the GD from danger whether inside and outside. Clear guiding rules for the use of martial violence were fixed in this Codex. The F.D.C. retains the traits of military organizations from before The Foundation, i.e. they are too unwieldy a force to effectively deal with localized internal threats. The ranking structure is multi-ethnic, a purely political move to ease the transition process. To this day, their directive remains to seek out and annihilate threats to the Global Dominion from within and without. They are known and feared as The Hammer of the Dominion.

The GD, who taxes both earth’s corporations and the CMG to arm itself and maintain peace through the colonies, funds the FDC. Within the FDC is a subdivision, which makes use of these funds to contracts Corps to maintain supplies.

The F.D.C. is the military arm of the Global Dominion. It protects and defends all Dominion interests against external and internal enemies. The FDC is the only lawful military organization in the Dominion. This is a huge responsibility, one that the FDC takes great care to exercise. They are trained to fight wars, but the decision to go to war is made by the elected government of the Dominion. When diplomacy and democracy fail, they are then asked to step in. When this happens the FDC is the only government and the only law in declared martial zones. The citizens living in these conflict zones can expect the FDC to provide them with defense, shelter, food and protection. This is the FDC mandate and there mission. One disadvantage of the Freedom Defense Corps is its high inertia, e.g. they may only use martial law, not overt action, to deal with internal enemies.

The FDC is neutral to all corporations, as they are civilians in the eyes of the GD. The FDC will intervene only when they are called to do this.

The FDC is comprised of the follow Units:

High Command (HC)
The Freedom Defense Marines (FDM)
The Freedom Infantry Corps (FIC)
The Central Training Division (CTD)
Foreign Affairs Department (FA)
Internal Security Department (ISD)
Medical Corps (MC)

Because of the current threat of aliens the Alien Research Team (ART) has been assigned as a unit in the FDC. This unit is responsible for responding to alien infestation as well as research of the alien race. Most of the research conducted is highly classified with reports shown only to the President of the Global Dominion or his/her appointed Representative.


Martial Law

Martial Law – In strict dictionary terms, martial law is the suspension of civil authority and the imposition of military authority. When we say a city, colony or world is "under martial law," we mean to say that the military is in control of the area, that it acts as the police, as the courts, as the legislature.

The degree of control might vary - a nation may have a civilian legislature but have the courts administered by the military. Or the legislature and courts may operate under civilian control with a military ruler. In each case, martial law is in effect, even if it is not openly called "martial law."

One individual (Field Marshall or designated Rep) is usually selected and given authority to act as the overseer with sweeping powers over city, colony or world. In war torn worlds many civilians may welcome the new emergency law as a means to combat the enemy insurgence and curb local crime. But the dark side to this total power is that it grants one individual too much power. The individual executing martial law is at the same time supreme legislator, supreme judge, and supreme executive. As necessity makes his will the law, he only can define and declare it; and whether or not it is infringed, and of the extent of the infraction, he alone can judge; and his sole order punishes or acquits the alleged offender.

Usually martial law will enable the individual to close off entire cities, countries, and worlds and impose curfews, restrict communications, and limit travel in and out of the countries or on and off worlds. Once signed or voted in by the leaders of the world or by an occupying military the individual in charge will have the power to declare martial law for a set period of time, either in specific areas or planet wide. To impose martial law in a specific area approval is needed from the colonial Senator. For it to be declared worldwide would require the approval from the President or the current Chair of the security and Intelligence committee, acting secretary of defense.

The power to rescind the law would also be upon approval by the same process.

If martial law is declared, usually according to pre-established doctrine the individual would have the power to:

* Take command over all police, intelligence, military, and other security forces.
* Create special courts for people accused of major crimes – anything from murder, rape, and kidnapping to destroying government property.
* Appoint civilian or military administrators in areas under martial rule.
* Release any defendant from custody, if deemed necessary for reasons of security.


Martial Law will only be used "in case of a grave threat to a colonies internal or external security or in case of an armed action that threatens the government’s (Earth and moonbases) stability."

When lawlessness of kidnappings, assassinations, and robbery are routine many civilians become hungry for strict law and order. On the other hand the martial law could become a permanent state that allows rulers to bypass the constitutional order completely.

The Main Responsibilities of the FDC:

* Must maintain peace and order in any zone that the LED cannot operate safely in.
* May intervene in any zone at the request of LED or the Colonial Senate.
* Must maintain the FDC at a constant state of combat readiness in order to defend the Dominion from any threat.
* Must be prepared to enforce Martial Law at all times when ordered and/or called upon.

Law Enforcement Department(LED):
Following the success of military centralization, The Law Enforcement Department was founded in 2112 in order to integrate all pre-Foundation police forces into a single entity. The organization’s introductory phase was bloody and anarchic, with many law enforcement elements deserting their posts in protest to the loss of national identity. Whereas military power could be conceded without major changes to each region’s way of life, the centralization of police forces was a dramatic and rapid reorientation of civil liberty many found difficult to accept. While violence and bloodshed erupted in population centers, Parliament acted. Martial law was enacted for the first time in The Global Dominion’s history, and order was restored.

With the merger of all the individual national Police Institutions into a unified body, it was inevitable that a clash of cultures and law enforcement methodology would arise, and is seen clearly even to this date. The Law Enforcement Department strives to overcome petty differences to work towards their common cause, but from time to time, conflicts inevitably arise due to the diverse personalities of the police officers. Nevertheless, shining moments arise when such differences are put aside for a greater good, as has been demonstrated in decades past.

The law enforcement picture is now complex, with corporate security forces now overlapping on their jurisdiction, and the encroachment of the FDC with its powers to declare martial law in any zone. Now with clan activities at a historical peak, the danger to LED officers and the threat to the rule of law have never been higher.

Since it's foundation, following the terror of 2112, with the unification of all Police Departments across Earth under a single command of the Commissioner of the Law Enforcement Department, removing all bureaucratic disputes over jurisdiction, the LED has reserved all rights to jurisdiction over all Earth Sectors and the Prison Colony, DeMorgan's Castle.

The various Commissioners over the decades have made many structural changes to the LED, but they mostly served to add to the bureaucracy that was to be overcome with the foundation of a unified Law Enforcement Department. Nevertheless, recent leadership changes have seen glimpses of potential for good in the Law Enforcement Department, as well as reestablishing a working relationship with the FDC.

Accusations of corruption within the LED have been rife. Whether or not those accusations have a legitimate basis to them remains to be seen due to the secretive nature of the Internal and Foreign Affairs Departments.

The Law Enforcement Department is the only legal armed civilian agency that has the powers of arrest, search and seizure, and imprisonment in the Dominion. The mission is to maintain the law and order in all zones under civilian authority. To do this job the Dominion has granted them certain powers and trust, and they must not let the citizens of the Dominion down in exercising the Law.

LED officers are at the forefront of ordered society, without which the democratic rule of law would not be possible. With the institution of the Colonial Senate they protect the very halls where Colonial rule is debated by the Colonial Senators.

They have the responsibility to uphold the law so the common citizen can live out their lives in peace and safety; and they will not let the citizens down.

Responsibilities

a) Must maintain peace and order in all zones.
b) Must make sure that all laws are enforced and criminals are identified, arrested, and remain incarcerated.
c) Maintain the integrity of LED by enforcing departmental rules, the conduct of proper legal police procedures, and the rooting out of corrupt officers.

Guardians of Mankind:
2307 - The Marketing Wars caused much civil unrest in the all the GD territories - shortage of items, price escalation to pay for the fighting and conflict, intellectuals trying to bring reason and sense, citizen protests growing into riots.. With the government evidently weakening in favor of corporate power, it seemed as if the values the Dominion had sworn to uphold would soon be forgotten as corporate concerns over profit overtook the management of the colonial communities. The Marketing Wars were truly a trying time for all of humanity.

An odd evolution soon occurred. Rioters soon begin to form into units; intellectuals begin to use some of the groups and focused their violence into specific purposeful plans of attacks instead of random hostile acts. Riots become much less and more true protest grew into political maneuvering looking for ways to elected members to office that support them. The smaller groups formed into like-minded larger groups where dynamic leaders emerge. Solernus a writer, intellect, philosopher, known for his poetry and its self rule-self doctrine headed the largest of these groups and gathered a growing following around his views. People started citing him and espousing his phrases and philosophy. Eventually they ask, and reluctantly he agrees to lead them – but anonymously and was simply known as "The Poet".

There was still much conflict and while Solernus hated violence, he recognized someone had to protect the peoples caught in the middle and saw mankind was doomed if the civil strife continued and corporate greed dominated the GD. He knew the Corporation were corrupting everything - GD politics through bribes and campaign promises, FDC to a minor degree with select promises of future jobs and fat retirement programs, LED to a major degree with out right offers of monies and wealth benefits to arrest those opposed to Corporations and private business folks.

Near 50 years after the onset of the Market Wars, the Guardians emerged, under the guidance of "The Poet" and his council of advisors using all their tools to bring peace and protect the future of mankind. Recognizing the need for visible and operational leadership, they formed the faction Command Council oligarchy in nature, .,the council picks their successors as well as their leader or Councilor, and each role is for life or retirement. It is not a democratic process but based on the view to select the best person to do the job.

The Guardians of Mankind forms many alliances, each to fit the day or current situation, and most importantly to fit their cause. They limit their hate to opposing corruption and oppression by anyone anywhere, even by those they at one time called friends. Working behind the scenes with deals, promises of support, and political pressure, they arose as experts at political manipulation. They will fight when it’s a last resort or left with no other alternative to get their message and/or cause in front of the people. The Guardians have even been known to have a radical element - barely controlled and rarely spoke about that like to shoot first and protest later.

The movement grew even stronger in the aftermath of the Independence War. The Guardians remain steadfast in their resolve against uncontested rule of the colonies by a corporate dominated government and in the rights of all to self govern. They believe only colonial communities should decide their own off-world policy, and that they should have a separate parliament elected by all the colonies. The Guardians are very popular on the colonies as well as earth, gaining headway due to two policies: they are spreading a message of accountability in the GD and their belief in a corrupt free GD - they do not even tolerate known criminals within their own ranks.

With the introduction of the Colonial senate the Guardians feel their time has come; a time to speak rather than raise weapons, a time to use the senate as a means to air concerns against the Corporation as well as bringing to light corruption in the highest law of the land, the Global Dominion Senate.

The Guardians put respect for mankind above all other rules, protecting the citizens from the corruptions of all political bodies, and especially those that are supposed to be protecting the citizens - the LED. Mercenaries of the Blood:
In 2073 when the military forces combined to create one single fighting unit, several promenade individuals in this new unit frowned upon the passive nature of the New Freedom Defense Corp. They despised the hurry up and wait attitude of the new military and saw opportunities of striking first turned down by leaders caught up in political rights.

Competition of the four multinational companies expanded into the so-called “Marketing Wars”, which started in 2307, brought forth further aggravation from a select few of FDC soldiers who saw guerilla warfare countered slowly and unsuccessfully. A fractured coup was attempted by disgruntled members of the FDC under the leadership of a man known only as “The General.” Stuck on an outpost for years he and his men plotted and schemed to find a way to become proactive instead of reactive. As a final desperate attempt to wake up the higher ranks of the FDC “The General” had his men attempt an assassination of the current Euro Corp leader. The FDC leadership discovered this plot and immediately ordered a kill on sight for the General and his staff. They escaped and hid using STS Genesis as their base of operations. Old warriors disgruntled with FDC due to “rich” families buying commissions for their sons and daughters sought out the General and his Blood Guild pledging loyalty to them. Thus the Mercenaries of the Blood were formed. The General became as illusive as the Grinning man and his staff became know as the Blood Guild.

The Corporations heard the rumors of this assassination attempt and sought to obtain the General’s attention. They loved his ruthlessness and were more than willing to pay for his services. The Mercenaries became famous and feared in the GD, due to their lawless and combative ways. The Corporations often hired them for work they wouldn’t do themselves. Only cash counts, and if there is sufficient available, their loyalty can be bought. On rare occasions a merc will work "pro bono" causes they feel are just.

The Mercenaries of the Blood is neither criminal nor political in their own view, although many beg to differ. They have been known to work for the highest bidder, but any alliances are always temporary and only as long as they get their cut. They have even been known to accept contracts by corrupt FDC and LED. If one were to look close enough into the MOTB contracts they might see the odd contract from someone in the Global Dominion trying to get a point across to their counter part in the Colonial Senate.

The Merc interrupt the law to suit their needs, in most cases there is no law. Its members are essentially vigilantes who reject all government. The clan is composed of violent minded people willing to go all the way to disrupt peace for a price. They believe that all human government is inherently corrupt and oppressive.

For many years there was civil unrest among the mercs as their numbers grew to included LED personal claiming the GD was corrupt thus turning their eyes to the ways of the MOTB. This civil unrest lead the current “General” to break the faction into Cells, each lead by a high ranking Mercs who was offered a seat on what is now called the Blood Council to add their voice. While the Blood Council exists the “General” and his Blood Guild maintain a firm hold on who is appointed as their Faction leader which overseas the Blood Council.

Due to the fact Merc’s tend to have different ideas of how the Faction should run, what they should believe, and what they support, the cells were a necessary addition to give each member the right to choose which path they would follow down the Merc road, they work in their groups or individually depending on the task at hand. Some cells grow strong bonds and will fight to the death for their cell-mates, while the solo mercs become more and more detached and loners but in the end if the call is made to all mercs to fight for one cause, all will come.

Through the years the Mercenaries have adapted their clans to follow the trail of money. With the recent introduction of the Colonial Senate more and more mercs are seeking the way of gathering information for a price instead of guns for hire.

Colonization and Mining Guild:
The CMG was created in 2156 with the sole task of colonizing the universe for economic growth and the expansion of human civilization to the far- reaching corners of the universe. The C.M.G. has been planning and scheduling all actions regarding space colonization, which has given the organization enormous political power. In 2159 the C.M.G. planned huge terraforming projects to take place over the next few decades. To make planets habitable, they had to ensure several objectives were achieved. First the temperature must be regulated and clamped to within a habitable range. This change is made possible by the alteration of the planet or satellite’s atmosphere, utilizing the greenhouse effect as needed to make it warmer or blocking certain spans of the electromagnetic spectrum selectively to make it cooler as necessary. Afterwards the atmosphere had to be denser. On many planets the density of atmosphere near the ground is only at 1% compared to Earth's whereas the density needs to be at least 30%.

After the Colonization and Mining Guild (CMG) established the third interstellar colony, Terra Venture I in the Gliese 876 system, it became necessary to summarize all regulations of space trade into one unitary law journal. The so-called "Charter of the Global Dominion" not only described interstellar laws of trade between the Earth and the colonies, but also reflected a new framework of justice for the Global Dominion. They used many lines from the former Charter of the United Nations from the 20th and 21st century. Antares, in orbit around the Gas Giant Gliese 229b has an immense mass, equal to that of 40 Jupiter. The Colonization and Mining Guild (C.M.G.) sought to establish a colony there because of the massive mineral and rare ore deposits.

In 2250 the first Vortex Gate was installed on New Haven with both CMG and Vortex Inc hosting the opening ceremony. Two years later, Project Daedalus was initiated, by the GD President, Mitchel DeGrood, and the CMG leadership declared Its intention during the coming years and decades, to build Vortex Gates on all established colonies.

2288 saw an increase to the population on colonies thanks to the CMG. So far, 16 colonies had been established, with 11 of these outside Earth’s solar system. The newest and most expensive facility is Constantinople, 44 light years from Earth in the 55-Cancri system. With so many Terraforming projects completed, every further colony brings the CMG. an increase in its economic and political power. Independent advisers watch this with great interest and increasing worry.

Gradually CMG evolved into a massive organization, responsible for the lives of millions of colonists and multiple trillions of wealth. Its governors are very powerful and influential people, and many of them get elected to Dominion office when they retire from the CMG. The Corporation’s purpose is to regulate mining and colonization, set standards, prices, and investigate fraud and price fixing. This makes it probably the most important political body of all the other Dominion agencies.

The CEO of the CMG is responsible for maintaining the Dominion colonies in space, and controlling the mining and production in these colonies, all colonial mining and shipping falls under the jurisdiction of the CMG.

The CMG is a very rich corporation that is the godfather of all space exploration. The CMG has colonized many planets and moons, and supports the people who are not as fortunate as the GD. mine materials, produce products, and dominant the markets, believing in democracy.

There are those who blame the CMG, an easy target for many. The CMG has control of the means by which resources are found and mined. It’s easy to see how members of this organization would divert the lion’s share of the wealth into their own pockets. Many believe the CMG has grown too powerful too fast, and lawmakers and ministers did not anticipate this properly. Many colonists view the CMG as the de-facto government in space, and reject any jurisdiction of the Dominion. Others clamor for its disbandment, claiming that it has usurped its mandate and become a political organization, instead of a government agency dedicated to the extension of humanity's domain. Because of this three other Corporation were established to spread the power throughout the universe. AE, AC have since been taken over by EC which now controls the lions share of production on earth leaving the CMG to continue domination in production and marketing throughout the colonies.

With the addition of a new Corporation in VI the CMG has decide there is a necessity to have its own military organization within the Corporation to protect what they’ve earned, the colonies they control, and assets they have acquired.

Eurocore:
In 2295 do to the unchecked growth in power of the Colonization and Mining Guild (C.M.G.) EuroCore emerged as a corporate superpower following the absorption of Eastern European countries, and the cheap labor and production facilities they held, into the European Union in the early 21st century. Quickly becoming an internationally scaled manufacturer and a leading arms producer in the 2312 the Marketing Wars, EuroCore amassed enough capital to ensure its legacy and survival for generations to come. EC continued to play a significant but passive role, winning several critical terraforming and robotics patents in the 22nd century. EC continued to control manufacturing on Earth and robotics research into the 23rd century, fueling mankind’s rapid colonization of space but playing a minor role itself.

The Euro Corporation emerged as the winner in terraforming and robotics when space colonization first began. It quickly grew into a massive super- corporation with facilities and offices spanning all of colonized space. Its main problem is its constant and ongoing power struggle with the CMG. The CMG needs EC’s terraforming super-factories in order to expand its colonies, but EC refuses to sell its manufacturing secrets or allow public shares sold in its core technologies. Therefore they keep driving a very hard bargain with the CMG for the use of its technology. The more cynical say that this is due to the surreptitious help of the Dominion.

EC holds patents on the core technologies that make the new manufacturing technologies possible. The unprecedented levels of automation possible in the planetary condensers and factory ships are the driving force behind the exploitation of space-based resources. It offers its members incredible benefits through its corporate wholesale stores that give employees access to very cheap manufactured goods. To have a relative gain employment in EC is a major economic boost for the family.

EuroCore is a successful corporation established largely by the FDC exiles known as TSS. The TSS built the Core based on three principles, Courage, Honor, and Faction. These are the hallmarks exhibited by all ranking officials and are still in practice today. They have a monopoly on all manufacturing plants in Old Europe, which gives them the advantage of having more plants then any other faction.

In 2397 CMG tired a hostile take over of AE and their pharmaceutical patents. AE was originally a simple drug maker who sold only in local markets. This changed when their labs discovered a protein that enabled the unlimited reproduction of human cells without the gradual corruption of gene sequences that normally made cloning impossible. This enabled them to develop organ replacement technology and replication therapy that transformed medical science, as we know it today. Likewise they operate all of the public medical services available on most planets. They also developed the biocell energy that enables some technologies to be powered by human bioelectric fields, such as watches, night vision goggles, computers and displays. It revolutionized the food and agriculture industry, producing strains of crops that can grow under the harsh conditions of terraforming farms and bio domes. It was also the leading researcher of cybernetics and synthetic biochemical. Shu Ming Lai and Sumey Emiko Head of the AE made the decision all out war against the CMG was the only way to protect their interests.

Because of CMG’s dominance in the Global Dominion Senate they soon started a war on two fronts both against AE and AC. AC was founded as a Satellite and Rocket technology company. It is the primary partner in the Vortex Technology. It tried to take control of Vortex Inc. at one point but the Dominion intervened, forbidding the public sale of its shares because they determined that Vortex technology was “critical to human civilization” and could not be put under the control of a single company. Despite this, AC has maintained its involvement in Vortex and has become unbelievable wealthy as a result. The mega-entity is composed of hundreds of sub companies ranging from satellite makers to hover-car manufacturers; however its true interest lies in space travel: it owns the lion’s share of shipyards and orbital space harbors, and has launched almost 50% of ships operating currently in space. Because of the various sub companies in the AC it soon found itself imploding with its resources stretched and credits running low. Jacek Wesolowsk head of the AC knew joining forces with AE was the only way to protect the company against the CMG.

Still this wasn’t enough against the growing power of the CMG and thus EC was offered shares in both companies in exchange for their allegiance against the CMG. William "The Eye" Sums and Trevor Anderson debated back and forth for weeks trying to decide what was best for the Euro Corp, in the end agreeing to the terms set forth by the AC and AE were accepted.

The three Corps was able to hold back the take over however EC discovered they were now the major stockholders of both the AE and AC. Some members of the AC refused to be part of this new Corporation compromised of 30% AE, 60% EC and only 10% AC and broke off to join up with VI taking their knowledge of Vortex gates with them.

The Head of three families controlling the majority stock in all three Corporations formed what is now called the Stockholders. EC maintained a larger share on the Board and thus the Corporation remained Euro Core. The Stockholders allusive members, who hand down policy to the Faction leader while remaining anonymous to most people, are only known as the “Holders”. With the combining of AC and AE, with EuroCore they now hold a monopoly over all manufacturing and production on earth and satellites.

Vortex Incorporated:
Examining the domains of man in the twenty forth century, it is impossible for even the most die hard Terran patriot to deny the shift of power favors the government less and less with each passing year, and this state of affairs has persisted for many decades, at the very least.

As the Global Dominion’s “glorious expansion into the stars” (to quote a GD President of the time) falters in the epic void and loneliness of the Outer Rim Territories Colonists find themselves dominated ever more by new masters; those of fine lunar business suits and false smiles. They are the executives. The age of the hyper-corporation has begun.

The vast majority of citizens find themselves unable to utter the word ‘corporation’ without summoning the mental image of a green letter ‘V’, interlaced by a number of jet black horizontal lines. Indeed, Vortex Incorporated’s primary area of business, the Vortex Gates that provide the human race with instant teleportation from one point to another across any distance, is regarded as the factor that holds the sprawling Global Dominion together. For better or worse, that is. A rise in sabotage attempts targeting Vortex Gates shows that not every citizen shares the joint GD-VI dream of a logistically unified species. In addition, Vortex Inc. manufactured star ship drives are fitted in virtually every vessel in the Global Dominion Navy, just as the corporation’s firearm designs, most notably the Orbit XB Infineon, are mass produced by a multitude of organizations across colonized space.

These publicly known facts aside, Vortex Inc. largely remains a mystery. The method by which Vortex Gates operate is one massive unknown to any outside the company’s Board of Directors. In addition, Vortex Inc. refuses to discuss how the Gates were originally developed, and where they are produced in the present day. They require no interior maintenance after deployment, and any unauthorized attempts to closely examine a Vortex Gate have thus far resulted in equipment malfunctions, believed to be fatal to the examiner, namely, the teleportation of the offending individual to an unknown location. Vortex Inc. claims this is due to the close proximity of biological material to the Gate’s core components. The more cynical critics claim that it is in fact a hard wired security device, designed to eliminate anyone trying to inspect Vortex Inc.’s most prized commodity. It certainly appears Vortex Gate repair technicians spend far more time observing their charges than actively working on them. Following a brief ceremony upon the installation of the first Vortex Gate on the colony of New Haven in 2250, with no prior warning given to the public, there has been no official dialogue concerning their operation.

Vortex Incorporated was originally founded in 2151, the year of the Vortex-Drive’s first official test, following the beginning of its development in 2135. The site for this historic occasion would be the Tokyo University for Mathematics and Physics. Tokyo would forever remain the throbbing heart of Vortex Inc.’s enterprise, and the leading scientists behind the momentous discovery would go on to found the company, with Kaemon Tinjuro as its first Senior Executive. The Vortex-Drive would eventually be propelled through another scientific frontier, with the development of the Vortex 4. The heavily modified drive was mounted on the GDS Calypso in 2212; although the ship’s destination, Gliese 229, was over nineteen light-years away, with the Vortex 4’s maximum velocity of 20c (twenty times the speed of light), the voyage was to take less than a year. A new age of exploration had begun.

Even if Vortex Inc.’s financial dominance had not already been assured, the launching of Project Daedalus alone would have seen the corporation into the history books as one of the strongest financial forces in existence. The Project, operated jointly between the GD, CMG and VI, aimed to create a network of Vortex Gates incorporating each colonized world. It would see Vortex Inc. realized as the single indispensable organization in mankind’s future. Should its gifts be removed, the human race would find itself stranded on countless tiny islands, and hopelessly adrift in the blackness of space.

In 2397, Vortex Incorporated ended almost two and a half centuries of government dependence, and invited citizens of the Dominion to become shareholders in the company for the first time in its history. The day after the announcement, Karl Spencer, then Senior Executive of VI, resigned for undisclosed reasons. A week before the transformation was to be completed, Liol Vielleneuve, formerly Vice of VI, committed suicide. The decapitation of the company’s leadership created a wound that threatened to throw the proceedings into turmoil, and it was only the Board’s rapid appointment of two replacements, Senior Executive Altair Tyrian and Vice Darien Glacier, saved Vortex Inc. from potentially crippling lost profit. Nothing conclusive is known of their respective pasts. One of Senior Executive Tyrian’s first measures was to rename the Board of Directors to “the Directorate”. Analysts believe this move may be a telling sign concerning his mindset.

Even with the coming of public funding, Vortex Inc. remains as shadowed in intention as it always has been; undoubtedly its focus is on research, but the precise nature of study remains unknown. The company maintains a strong, well-equipped private security force. Although it is traditionally pro-Dominion due to the benefits of government manpower, it is unclear how the corporation’s political stance will shape up over the coming days. It appears to bear an arrogant indifference as far as the affairs of other factions are concerned.

With the coming of Vortex Inc.’s status as a public company, control of the organization has bled from the aristocratic arteries of families such as the Tinjuros and Hosokawas (many of whom descend from the company’s founders), and instead favors a multitude of opportunistic, and often anonymous, Dominion citizens. That being said, the old guard is by no means willing to allow their holdings to slip away entirely, and viciously guard their shares of the corporation. The immense power the Corporate Board has over Vortex Inc. as a whole could be used to a number of ends, and time will tell how the situation develops.

These factors combine to make Vortex Incorporated an unknown quantity, and one that must be monitored extremely close should its unfathomable influence be twisted into a form harmful to mankind. One can only pray the human race will never have to bear the unending damnation Vortex Inc. alone has the power to grant.

Thats like reading a story book, No one is going to read all of that, And the game is pretty kool, I played it in Beta too.

i can't read all this...

We didn't need a novel about your life, but anyway don't think there is a trial; haven't found one.

I tried the game, but i think it leaves too much to player control. That means when say your "commander" isn't on or someone in the commanding chain doesnt play that much, you're not gonna have as much "action". PvP element also lacks content in my opinion. Also, no more concept of killing NPCs for money, you gotta mine or manufacture (in some peoples books thats a plus, but i just like to whack NPCs with blunt objects or blast em with somethin ~.~).

Overall though, it brings a completely different concept of gameplay to MMORPGs, and i think...that if someone doesnt like MMORPGs normally...might like this game(depending on which aspects they look for in a game).

All of these are valid points, but all they come down to is player preference. Also, High rankers are demoted if they are in-active, and another player is promoted. And the NPC thing is, they don't want the game to become a grind game, which they have in a way failed at. The new mission system(because the mission objectives were badly thought up) is much more of a grind than they were in Pre-retail/Pre-milestone, but there is hope for people who hate the grind, because they are redoing the mission system in milestone 2.
