sounds plausible - the height thing is perfectly logical, seeing as humans in victorian times and beyond were teeny with the average height for women and men being lower than it is now, so people getting taller makes sense.
so does the "more attractive" parrt as well - in a world where people strive for perfection, it stands to reason that people will be more attracted to the good-looking part of the species so any crap genes will be weeded out
but i agree with Hydra - chances are will do something extremely dumb [and i mean dumber than voting the Monkey and his Organ Grinder to be in charge of our fate again ] and will end up destroying the whole of civilisation and resources and killing every living thing except cockroaches, which will outlive us all

I believe the distinction you're looking at there is between 'micro-evolution' (tiny changes animals make over the course of several generations to adapt to changes in their environment/predators/etc, which can be observed today and shown in experiments over short periods of time with simple organisms) and 'macro-evolution' (entirely new species or genera developing or higher orders of change, which can only be evidenced through interpretation of the fossil record and related sources of information).Quote:

exactly - evolution basically means "survival of the fittest". In ye olde cavemenne tymes, it meant choosing a partner who fit/strong/good at hunting and so the weedy ones didnt get a partner and their crap genes stopped.
in modern times, who picks a partner based on their hunting skills? We don't need to. Now, like someone said, we choose partners based on aesthetics - for example, there are two women willing to marry you and you can only choose one. The first woman is very intelligent and has no history of mental/physical illness, but is ugly as hell. The second woman is also very intelligent and also has no history of mental/physical illnesses, but is extremely attractive.
Which would you go for?
Chances are you'd go for the second woman - they're exactly the same but the second woman is just more attractive than the first woman. So you mate and [im basing this on you being halfway attractive as well] and have kids and because of the genes they got from you both, they turn out to be pretty clever and good-looking. And then they grow up, and they get given a choice of two people to marry, the only difference being one is a lot more attractive than the other.
I personally think that the Orcs will consist of chavs, and the Elves will be, well, the rest of the human race. And there will be no chance of them mixing but lets face it, what self-respecting person would marry someone with the IQ of a dead amoeba when they could have someone decent? :P
Some people in this thread seem to be missing the point that 'survival' is not so narrowly defined as just physical strength/ability to survive against physical/environmental problems. For social animals including humans, beneficial social traits such as being able to communicate well in social settings and being able to present oneself in an attractive way (attractiveness is not all about 'looks') is just as important, if not more important than, being physically stronger than a potential rival. Also different in humans when comparing to lower order animals, is the measurement of being a 'good provider'. In lower animals this equates to being able to protect one's family from harm (so usually the biggest, strongest, fastest, most agile etc). Regardless of attractiveness in other respects, the ability to provide in humans is usually measured more by wealth and social standing (if you're really young or really old [err.. old and not rich lol]) then you probably have less provider attractiveness because very young people have a harder time getting well-paying jobs, and older people... well, they die sooner :P And of course there are a number of other factors which could be evaluated (subconsciously or consciously) to make up one's attractiveness as a potential family provider.

It only makes sense. We all are very far offsprings from an African women who lived a long, long time ago (maybe). We evolve into the different races which exist today because of geological location to get used to the climate and atmosphere. Now further into the future we will seperate based on our choice of partners. The smarter only get smarter, and the stupid only get more stupid. The pretty become prettier, and the ugly become more ugly. Now, personally, i think there will still be those in the middle, because human genetics aren't absolute. Smart and pretty people still have the chance to produce a defect child. The stupid and ugly still have a chance to reproduce a less stupid and less ugly child.
So, I think that having 2 absolute sub-species is impossible and will not happen. Unless a law was made to make the pretty and smart people move to one side of the world, and the ugly and stupid to move to the other side. Only if we have no contact with each other at all. There will always be smart/pretty people who would take an ugly/stupid person, no matter how small the percentage is.
Saying that every human would choose an attractive person over a non-attractive person is kidding yourself. We are human, not machines.
So.... No ones seen that movie Gattica? Everyone seems to be forgetting about genetic engineering and designer babies. It's happening now in very small numbers, but say 20-30 years from now it will be a common place...

I've for a long time seriously thought the dimwitted shouldn't have kids for the good of mankind. Actually I'm a little disappointed my gf isn't smarter (not to say she's dumb or anything, not at all :P), because I hope if I can't make a breakthrough in any area, my child(ren) would, but well perhaps her genes would work towards more beautiful kids than mine, and I wouldn't want geniuses if they don't look good.
