Setting up Sygate Firewall
First of all, the guide that is everywhere in this forum is NOT safe !
Hackers can use 127.0.0.1 to access SQL with that setting, to get i safer just do like this:
1. Run all the MuServer programs.
2. In Sygate Personal Firewall right click anywhere in Running Applications select Large Icons right click and select Block to: MySqlld.exe, Dataserver(s), ExDB MFC, Eventserver, SQL Server Windows NT.
The ONLY programs you need to allow is: GameServer(s) and CS.exe.
There is no need to do any thing else, the standard setting is allright, the firewall will automatic blocks hack attempts for 600 seconds.
It can be done simple as that.
By the way, this is for ppl withOUT router.
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
Can I ask you sth? How do I know do I need router or not?
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
Router is just another piece of hardware.
If you have only one computer connected to the internet you dont need one (I have 10 at my cafe and still dont need one).
They will even increase your lag ^^

i have 20 pc, how can i make it all lagless if i dont use router..and i am using STATIC IP.
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
sorry to open old topic ..
But can i use this even i have a Router ?
Thanks
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
Like Dios said a router is just another piece of hardware.
Its kind of like a HUB/Switch, basically it routes your internet connection to multiple lines and some(most...) have wireless also.
Depending on your internet connection speed you can have a ton of lag or slightly less. No matter if 20 computers are sharing a 3.5meg (or 5meg whatever the hell you get around there...) connection then you may have some lag if they are all actively using the internet.
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
Sorry to open up this topic but id like to know if anyone have tried installing this firewall remotely. Im afraid of not being able to log in to the remote server (Remote Desktop) after i havel install the firewall.
Thanks
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
hmm msrose.. thats an issue..
i would like to know the answer also actually. cause i don't want to buy a preinstalled firewall with my dedicated, it costs a lot and useless. sygate better.
hmm
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
sygate its good but some people cant watch ur webpage if firewall its on. even chat server its blocked no matter what ports u allow and what programs. no matter what exception or advanced rulez u make.
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
i researcher about the firewall on dedicated servers and installing it.
I found out that all respecting themselves dedicated servers use IPMI for remote control which is installed on a separate peace of hardware with IP of its own. meaning you can install what ever you want but the remote controll will be there forever even if u block it's port, and because it has separate IP no one will know how to connect to your server remotely.

yo man
bullshit
router's job is not blocking ports
the original invention of router was to spread the signal from 1 modem to more than 1 pc.. to set limits to each pc and to make a network at home. its basically an advanced HUB box involved to security utility.
u can block all ports from ur windows and have same security as your router gives you
firewall's purpose has nothing to do with router
router can't block pings, cant respond to forts scanning, cant block possible attacks in runtime etc
FIREWALL IS A MUST!
now lemme teach u all a small lesson

for MU, router is good. no doubt. but you can make same safety even without it. only need to be a bit more pro for that
firewall for MU is a must!
its much easier to block IPs from firewall.
you can dedicate some ports for separate IPS. you can block ur entire MSSQL to be accessable from your PC (ip 127.0.0.1) ONLY, this protects you from any sort of blasters and remote editors.
also if you are smart, you can protect yourself from being Shelled (its when someone uploads to ur pc a webpage which can operate upon ur database using ur MU Web config.php file) using a firewall
i wrote a dam good guide about how to do all the statements above in one of BlackEye's help threads. but sadly for him he forgot to put a tag and as i understand his thread got deleted before he could even read it.. i will some day repost it. not now though :P
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
sorry men,but i use rooter and dont hawe any problems with ports, becose rooter block all ports and you just need to open needet ports, dont need any FW (except Windos FW)!
if you hawe rooter,FW is need for block block some IP or IPBAN!
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
of course. lemme just remind ur that ur server is getting owned by HAHABOT.. the most easy thing to protect
have fun with that anyway and keep believing in the dream of no firewall of urs
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
kirka121!
Sorry about that,i just now seen the picture!
Ok! I will try with Sygate! Than will see!
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
How to have Sygate on Windows 2003 server? If you install it, you must restart and then the pc crash and you can't login =/
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
If you are using it on a dedicated server, ask for support on your dedicated hosting company if you are using it on your house with hands on config on it, check your windows :P its windows problem

Is there any solution to make Sygate not block traffic after setup & reboot? Because not every support at datacenter have such service as configuring user's software or it's too expensive.
Re: [Guide] Setting up Sygate Firewall
The best way for you is ask for kvm access... or if you are good enough explaining you just ask them to make your firewall on allow all mode coz it blocks you after installing them, if they wont give that simple support or they dont have KVM access much better if you transfer to other company LOL as those dedicated sucks not having full support on customers and kvm for users troubleshooting...
