[All] next-gen games dumbing us down?

I'm begginning to think this. If you look back in america in the lates 70's/early 80's the only games nerds would play was D&D, and you have to have some intelligence to play that game. Not to mention you have to literally use your imagination to see the dungeons, fight the goblins, and have drunken fights half-naked at a camp fire for the last piece of rind. heh good times :p.

Now games are so simple you just have to point and click your way through linear maps, massive mob grinds, etc. it's not really original after the third mod or so...

Depends on the game you play.

Things like WoW, L2 etc yes, very much point and click. More strategic games such as C&C CS etc make you think first. Then there are business games such as EvE Online where its basicly a RL sim in space.

I think gaming has become more mainstream, back in the 70-80s not many people would play games at all, it would be a nerd only sport :) now anyone can pick up a game, even brain dead athletes :p

Though since it was polled i doubt its very trust worthy, never trust polls they are always done so they get the answer they want. No one would care if gamers were all steriotypical would they? ;)

Games are getting more eh based. Most people only look for flashy games, I for one want something thats not work. Now when you say D&D I never played it, I wanted to but no one I know did so I never touched it (didnt want to spend weeks learning the rules and alot of $$$ to buy all the stuff needed).

About the addiction, yes its true. I for one do play games none-stop. If I had the choice to ban games I would just so this problem would go with it. *waits for flames/bs* And when/if I have kids I'm going to never let them play them unless I see its possible to control it. I never had someone telling me "only after you do this" or "only for __ hrs/mins" So I over did it alot and still do.

Robert u cant compare WoW with L2... the only thing they have in common is the "mmorpg" text before the game name. The bad thing is that WoW was a great game and will be untill the mid january, when the bc comes out and turn it into "just another Eastern Sun". Yes it was about farming and grinding, but it was also a community no other game has (and will have imo), after u do the grinding/farming everything else is based on skill and tactics.

I never played D&D because i think i wont like it, its "slow" for me... maybe it is a great game but i will never be sure.

Im addicted to games and im not proud of it, but i cant change it and after all i tried (everything else :D), i really dont enjoy it that much. Gaming is a way of life, but im learning 3D Design now and playing games is helping me (my imagination).... so thats the good part of it. The bad one is that my real life is "smaller" than my game addiction :(

I compare WoW and L2 because they are both grind games. WoW you grind to 60 then grind epic gear then grind honor, worse game ever tbfh. There is no skill to it at all, its all gear therefore how much time you have. L2 is basicly the same, grind to 75 grind for money for items same thing.

Personaly i get addicted for short periods of time where i will grind the hell out of the game and relise it wasnt worth it :p Case in point im about to finish a month of WoW even though it really is the worse game ever made >_ >. I also get addicted to things like sports or studying for small periods of time so i guess i have an addicted personality :)

I supringly totally disagre with that statement in majority, while it is true there are some games that have a pont and click feel to them they are minorty and many people not suprinsgly do not like those games, the others like mentioned above CS and war3 are incredible...yes incredible. Why? in cs in those rare moments in assualt where you Ct and you find yourselves with a tie breaker of a score, the funds low and team morale lacking.It is then that the true power of games comes out , as your team makes the final storm through the entrance of the warehouse working together fully as a team you cannot help but have a special bond with every single person in that team.

It is in this demonstration that you can see the unsurmountable powers one single game can have let alone thousands that have been made

So though some are disappointing we humans have the sense to see their failures and disregard them for the classics. MMorpg's included ; mapa is totally right, they are abou theyre coomunities and teamwork , where else can you and you rguild get into intense 2 hour battles with uber mobs in WoW while socialing over a TS line.

Games has brought and split humankind apart, i am thankful i have felt the softeredge of the blade.

Games don't make you dumb (unless they're your only perception of reality - which won't happen without being raised by a games console). If I sat in a room somewhere and folded paper for 4 hours a day I wouldn't become a troglodyte after three weeks.

90% of the games that make you smarter are kept very much quiet (such as D&D back in the day, when people thought u were a uber nerd just cuz u played). But there are games that make you think. I'll give a few examples, The X-series (mainly X2 and X3) are very awesome games, huge universes, you have to have a brain to play =P. EVE online, also a very huge game, the learning curve for the game is like a month or so, from there its intense strategy and people management. Civilization series, amazing games @_@;; i grew up playing Civ.

Almost all MMO games, you notice all the smart people are the best, the average people are the ones that believe the game is all about the grind, and the newbs are the ones that just don't have time to play. In any MMO, you have to compete for the number one spot, that doesn't just mean grind, that means managing people, managing boss spawn times, knowing what kind of party is good for the boss you're gonna kill, knowing the technique required to kill that boss, etc etc. So Lin2 and WoW appear to be point and click, and they will stay point and click if thats all you take those games to be, but if you are fortunate enough to break into the circle of some of the best people on the server, you'll see that there is a whole lot more than just grind.

Anyways, theres a whole lot more games that sharpen your intelligence, you just have to avoid the "mind numbing" ones :).

D&D is great, you can pick up a starting set for around £35 then you can draw your maps, use counters or warhammer models for players and enemies, its basically a game of imagination. Although i did prefer making characters (roll a character) more than playing.

Thats why i fucking love MUD's.
