[MaNGOS] VMware appliance

Ok VMware appliance version .1 alpha
I use VMware Workstation 5.0
Ubuntu 6.06 server
fast internet connection

I am using a 5gb vmdk.
#After installing Ubuntu 6.06 server I first ran
$ sudo apt-get update
#then i ran
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
#now i am running
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Installing Ubuntu desktop is a 1.5 gigabyte download it will take forever, once ubuntu-desktop is done downloading it will select and depack all packages and install them automatically.
This entire process will take a good 2 hours or more depending on how much pc power you have.

(Tip: If you have multiple harddrives on your physical system and have no raid setup on your physical system you can create a 5gb vmdk, them copy the vmdk and its counter part to how ever many different harddrives you have, then you can add those vmdk's to your virtual machine and start it up with the Ubuntu server install disk in the drive. When you boot it up and start the process of installation make sure you use software raid and select all the harddrives into 1 raid disk.)

You will notice some errors may have occured during install such as font and services shut down that did not execute correctly but do not worry this is fine for now.

Ubuntu desktop should have installed and you should be back to command prompt.
Now remove the iso from your virtual cdrom.
Now send the term signal to shutdown and reboot
$ sudo shutdown -r now
And your system will reboot.
Now the gui will load. To access your local site you can type it into Firefox address bar:
Your site will be [url=http://localhost/]cPanel

how's the progress going? That sounds like a simple way to get a wow server up.

Well lol I would love to say I am 90% into my venture, however installing the gui into ubuntu server seems to be a mistake because even if I did zip it into rar for portability it would still be a download way over 1 gig. So instead I am going to start over with the installation and I am gonna go text based instead. Meaning installing mangos in text based and installing the db in text based just have a basic setup.

But I am not even close to that since my knowledge on linux is limited and I am learning.

Using apt-get I have managed to explore alot of different software for linux that is interesting, gui based mostly and my favorites include the internet explorer for ubuntu. Im using that right now. Next I will try to manage my db with a gui based programs, maybe install SQLyog with wine to familiarize myself with mysql in ubuntu.
After that is done I will start a new install on a 600Mb vmdk and go from there.

I could use tips and trick if there are any available so please feel free to post into this thread regarding vmware mangos appliance.

Well it seems my project has come to a stop, I tried to configure the password in mysqladmin and now it will not let me connect. Apparently setting trying to connect to mysql even with sqlyog running in wine is a huge pain in the ass. It is more challenging then other linux tasks that seem intimidating. Well maybe I am just being hard on myself since I am just not experienced. Well I will just try to find a workaround so I can access my sql through admin then I will replicate that method with SQLyog.

Change in plans, it seem as though going with linux is still a great idea, as a matter of fact reprogamming DSL Linux would be the essential thing to do and adding a growing image to DSL for the db would make a 100% transportable vmwar appliance for mangos. But the downfall on my part is it is way too complicated for my begginer knowledge, this job is best off left to a decorated Linux veteran.

So my focus is now fully shifted towards just creating the appliance using Windows XP. So i created a workstation and with the workstation I used the XP installtion iso I have with nLITE to try and strip down windows xp as much as possible. I made the first installation using the stripped down unattended version of windows and the outcome is is was able to install it into a 1.45 gb vmdk using up only about 400 mbs of space on it.

Next time I will strip down Windows even more and try from scratch to disable even more useless system resources. I will cater Windows strictly just to run MySQL, SQLyog and MaNGOS over a network. This VMware appliance will be of no use for any other tasks such as internet browsing, gaming, mail,etc.

Additionally I will not be able to upload this appliance because it will be in violation with the eula. So instead I will upload the nLITE configuration file WITHOUT the xp key which is not in violation of any laws.

And that is my update, once this project is done please follow the rest of the guides available to install MaNGOS into your vmdk.

Don't need server if you also want to use it, install desktop, apache, php, mysql, server. Easy.

No no no :D, the point is to set an environment pre-setup, like...
... ready to use right out of the box.
To prevent posts from people who have no idea on how to configure.
And most importantly to have the appliance in the smallest form possible to enable its transportability. Would you like to help? Since it seems I am only the second person suggesting to start off such a project to my knowledge.

Well I hope you do or atleast someone can join in.
