Could someone give me, or point me to, a quick rundown on the difference(s) between antrix and mangos? Is it a matter of updated instance scripts, or spawns, or control over the servers? Are they based on the same core?
I recently set up a mangos server and it was fairly easy to get it going, but as I dig deeper I now find there are other server types.

This isnt all but Antrix has a MUCH better networking system. On MaNGOS if you have a server that can hold 100 people, Antrix you can hold up to 700+. And i personally think its easier to setup.
Also the GM commands are a tiny bit different.

Is there a major difference in the completeness of the spawns/instances? I notice that many of the private servers use antrix (obvious for the reason you note). Do most of those servers write their own scripts for instances, or do they often rely on a common core set of scripts and then 'personalize' their own?

Well it depends on the DB. Some mangos DBs may have more instances than the antrix ones. Depends on if the person scripting the DB decided they want to add all the instances es ore what.
mangos is on its last legs. theres nothing good about it anymore. antrix is growing very very fast. and mangos is having a hard time keeping up.

smooth
good db
can match any wow version.
I am fine with whatever works. As long as the DB has most of the mobs & instances, I'll be happy!
Just trying to sort out which has most of the TBC instances done so far...
Keep the comparisons coming! Been very hard to determine the differences between mangos and antrix for a relative newbie learning about this...

ATM I have MaNGOS 1.0.12 and Antrix files on my computer
Altho I so far have only got MANGOS 1.0.10 running a server
(this is cos I find it to complex my self :P) However I should have a antrix up and running soon with the guides on this GREAT site :D
I'm saying this cos in answer to your question..
I would say Antrix is "better" cos there is ALOT more commands and it can hold more players..everything that pedwily said :)
But..
MaNGOS, I've found to be easyer...(1.0.10) was alot easyer to set up..just a simple "click 'n' install" as for its commands there simple like... e.g. .tele gmisland , where as on antrix it is .recall port gmisl (hope thats right ^.^)
So yeah...overall Antrix beats MaNGOS :)
Mangos is much more developed then Antrix.
It has a lot more features like trade skills and talents, tabards, AH and a lot of small things that make pve great fun. If you are not planning on having more then 200 people connected i would definately recommend mangos.
Antrix is, or was untill 2.1 compatibility, much more stable then mangos, and discutable it still is. the 2.0 antrix could house +-max 1000 players with only occational crashes. The allerged stable 429 revision allowes us to have 400 people connected that get disconnected more often than at mangos.(like maxes out at 15 minutes online)
Antrix 2.0 is great for pvp, battlegrounds work and it allowes for big groups of people to get together without crashing.
Well, about the instances questions.
As far i didn't find any Antrix database with Karazhan.... UNBELIEVABLE... Y_Y
Anyway there is black temple working (still not complete indeed) with Supremus and Illidan Stormrage.
i like Antrix, best GM commands, more stable, good DB, fast releases.
does antrix have home page, forum or something like that??
i notice that the silvermoon forum is down for a few dayz now.
