i only know that you should convert any videos to mp4
Music and films are quite easy, when you put in a memory stick you can format it, it will put all the right folders in place, so you can just place music under the (drive):\PSP\Music, videos are a little harder as you have to put them in the right format, but there are simple programs like Xilisoft PSP Video Converter that allows you to convert almost any format into a video file that the PSP can read.
Battery life depends on what you do with it, but i can use it for about 10 hours, but i believe that mine uses a lot less since i play games from the memory stick (either requires a old Firmware 1.0 or 1.5 model, or the use of a hacked firmware) which should use a lot less power then the UMD drive takes.
I would suggest for him to wait for the new model, it's pretty much the same, but it's lighter, thinner, better battery life, loads games faster and allows you to play games, movies etc on your TV.
As for other information, well the games look really nice on it, there are some great titles on it, videos look amazing on it, they are really great, the music chip is of a high quality, with some good headphones or earphones (are they called that, i'm not sure) it sounds great.
I would also have him check for dead pixels, you can get a new 1 back if you got dead pixels, so i would check for them.
