Connecting to a SQL Server.

Is it possible to connect to a SQL server by (let's say: sql client) on a remote location? Like I enter the IP, username, password etc, and then I can view and edit the contents? I would like to do this without Remote Desktop (so, not connecting to the computer first, then opening sql manager etc). If so, which program should I use for this? I tried to do some research on google but couldn't find anything.
