WHAT IS DOTA?

Defense of the Ancients (often referred to as DotA) is a custom map for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for the Blizzard title Starcraft. It is a team strategy game focused on hero combat. The objective is to destroy the opponents' base using one's own Hero along with allied heroes and allied AI-controlled fighters called "creeps". Sharing concepts with role playing games, the player levels up their hero and uses gold to buy equipment in an effort to best the opposing team. The map was developed with the World Editor of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, but was updated upon the release of The Frozen Throne. While there have been many different variations on the original concept, the most popular version at tournaments is DotA Allstars, which has been maintained by several authors over the course of its development. Since its release, Allstars has become a feature at several worldwide tournaments, including Blizzard Entertainment's Blizzcon and the Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution leagues.

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT:

The original author of Defense of the Ancients was a mapmaker by the name of "Eul". However, after the Warcraft III expansion The Frozen Throne was released, Eul did not update the map. He made the DotA code open for other developers and The original Defense of the Ancients' development split away from the development of DotA Allstars. Numerous variants were created based on the original, but Allstars became the de facto standard of the map.

Based on the original map, Allstars was developed by an author under the alias Guinsoo; with the release of the 6.x version of Allstars another developer named IceFrog took up development. IceFrog is now the main programmer for the map, doing everything from implementation and balancing to debugging. With successive versions, features, heroes, items, abilities, and graphics are added or updated and bugs are fixed. For example, in version 6.48, Icefrog added a feature which automatically changes the terrain from grass to snow; each release is accompanied with a changelog. On the DotA Allstars forum, users can post ideas for new heroes or items, some of which are added to the map; Icefrog recently added a new hero based on submissions for a "model-to-hero" contest on his site.

GAMEPLAY:

DotA pits two teams of players against each other. Each team has a base in opposite corners of the map, which is defended by towers. In the heart of each base is the "Ancient", a building which must be destroyed in order to win the game. Thus, teams fight against the enemy team as well as computer controlled units and defensive structures.


Each human player controls a single Hero, which is a powerful unit with unique abilities. In Allstars, players choose one of eighty-nine heroes available between the two teams, each which have different spells, strengths, and tactical advantages over other heroes. DotA is very team-oriented; it is hard for one player to carry his or her team to victory single-handedly. DotA allows for a maximum of ten players in a five versus five format and an additional two slots for referees or observers, and games are usually played with even numbers of players on each side.


As gameplay revolves around the use of individual heroes, it does not require one to focus on resource management and base-building, which is common in traditional real-time strategy games. Instead players focus on strengthening their heroes. Killing computer-controlled creeps earns the player's experience, and when enough experience is accumulated the player gains a level. Leveling up improves the hero's toughness and the amount of damage it can inflict, as well as allowing players to upgrade their spells. In addition to accruing experience, players also manage a single resource, gold. The typical resource-gathering of Warcraft III is replaced by a combat-oriented money system; in addition to a small periodic gold income, heroes earn gold by killing creeps, base structures, and enemy heroes. With their gold, players buy items to strengthen their hero and gain additional abilities. Certain items can be combined along with 'recipes' to create more powerful items. Buying items to suit one's hero is an important tactical element of the game.


DotA Allstars offers a variety of game modes, which are selected by the game host at the beginning of the match. The game modes dictate whether people can choose their own hero or be assigned one randomly, as well as the difficulty of the game. Many game modes can be combined (for example, an easy difficulty level and a random pick), allowing for even more flexible game options.

RECOGNITION AND POPULARITY:

DotA has experienced increasing popularity over time. Blizzard officially recognized DotA Allstars as its first Spotlight Map entry in the Battle.net Hall of Fame, a recognition given to only six other maps in the Hall of Fame's history. The game was later featured by Computer Gaming World in a review of new maps and mods in Warcraft III. Allstars has also become recognized at tournaments, becoming an independent tournament item at the debut of Blizzard's BlizzCon convention in 2005. Dota Allstars was also featured in the Malaysia and Singapore World Cyber Games 2005, 2006, and the World Cyber Games Asian Championships 2006. DotA is now included in the game lineup for the internationally-recognized Cyberathlete Amateur League, and the CyberEvolution league. LAN tournaments are a major part of competitive DotA play around the work, including Dreakhack in Sweden and ASUS in Russia; due to a lack of LAN tournaments and championships in North America, several DotA teams have since disbanded.
The game has become a hit in many parts of the world, especially in the Philippines, where it has replaced Counter-Strike as the most-played game. It is also popular in Sweden and other Northern European countries, where the DotA-inspired song "Vi sitter i Ventrilo och spelar DotA" by Swedish musician Basshunter reached the European 2006 charts at #116 and cracked the top ten Singles Charts in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. The popularity of the song led to a rise in coverage of the game, with non-gaming European publications writing stories about the gametype. Fans also created the artwork displayed while the map is loading.

Mine would be Tidehunter (Leviathan), Slayer (Lina Inverse), Dwarven Sniper (Kardel Sharpeye) and Sand King (Crixalis)

Dwarven Sniper is nice. Never played him, but seen him in action when playing with a friend. My personal favorite is Razor (Lightning Revenant), Horde of course. When I play Alliance I normally choose that 3-headed dragon (dunno his name).

What kind of gear (items) do you guys usually try to get (not just endgear, but beginning gear aswell). I want to try new gears =P

Razor is a nice char but I lost interest in Intelligence based characters eventually. More in to agility and strength based now. The 3 headed dragon - u mean the twin headed dragon? Man, I hate that char. Dunno why.. :P

Gear: Well I play strength and agility characters mainly.
This is what I buy.

1. Ring of Regeneration
2. Boots of Travel
3. Bracers x 2 or 3 based on the character
4. Gloves of Haste (eventually Power Treads)
5. Then a Level 4 Shop item. For eg: Satanic, Butterfly and etc.
6. Then a Level 3 Shop item. For eg: Battlefury, Lothars edge and etc...

BUt hte item combination totally depends on teh char am playing really.. :)

Usually I get Boots of Speed some braces and some tangos :P Then going for Ring of Regen or Ring of Health depending on what I'm going for lategame.

And Boko it's Sentinel vs Scourge ;)

Ursa, Balanar, Necrolic. End items i usually have something along the line of
Satanic
That armor with +55% attack speed
Butterfly
powertreads
Buriza do kanyon

No you don't :) We play using Hamachi (or maybe GGE) which means we simulate LAN games.

DotA is THE shit to Wc3 :P

Edit: Maybe time to make a hamachi channel again and try to organize some games? Was fun last time :)

Just a note , i dont think u get the concept behind build-making , u do it on the basis of looking at the heroes skills and getting the items best fit to advantage this , or in-turn the hereoes basic strong points.

So in the case of Ursa , you'l want to first look at the most damaging skill / the ulti , its damage is based on % of hp .. so what you get hp+ items to increase it. Going this way is much much more effective then buying items like satanic. Which is useful but u wont to kill them as fast as possible, so a more effective build for the bear would be
Lothars ; generic but works a charm to build up kills and farm of the ints
Assault cuirass ; makes him effectively imbalanced when + with ovrpwer lvl4
2 Hearts ; very very effective , adds to 4k hp+ which gives you the hp to take on more then 1 , and the dmg (when ultied) to take on 3 ^^
Buriza ; only worth it rly after the 2 hearts.
Boots ; since the change to p.ts i have to say they theyre much much more effecive and then boots of teleport , and they can be changed anytime during the game which is a killer help.

Satanic on Ursa is useless since it's orb duh?

Anyhow about P.Ts vs BoT I normally go for BoT if I'm having trouble chasing my enemy hero, otherwise P.Ts since they are cheaper and "better".

Anyone tried Barathrum(?) Spiritbreaker with 2 Bashers? I promise you, if you get ONE hit, noone survives a 1 vs 1 against you :D Even one basher pwns and 2 is just waaay imba.

Ursa with Vladmir's Offering pwn + hp support items + attack speed.

My personal favorite is Jah'rakal(Troll Warlord)

I play that hero with Mjollnir + 2 butterfly + Cuirass Assault + MKB
Also Power Treads (never use Boots of travel on him)

Also i dont play Jah'rakal with Lifesteal, it SUCKS. I dont know why people making Lifesteal items on him, also Sniper too.

For sniper, i put Desolator on him, hes pwn :D

I usually play on EuroBattle.net, not GGClient nor Hamachi.

Well if you get that lategame so you can afford that you REALLY need to work on your tactics, you are supposed to have won after half that money lol.

Europe's battlenet suck because everyone is so damn immature calling each other for stupid lame things. And if you try to play on America you get kicked just for beeing from Sweden even though you got a ping lower then 50 -.- And you can't play Asia because they doesn't use our alphabet XD

well, i try to stay alive as best as i can and try to kill more as best as i can so i can afford all of this items before lategame. Also i try to farm too :D so, I should have Mjollnir in mid-game + 1 Butterfly.

For the EuroBattle.net, you are right, i've been playing there for 2 months and most of the people are a pain in the ass to play with. Most of their host game are for EU. And if you're not from EU, they will kick you lol, but 80% of the game, they let me stay. SOmetimes, you team up with a retarded team and you lose -.-

Also what i hate about the people in EuroBattle.net is they ask for free slot and they call you a LEAVER just for the host to kick you so they can get free slot.

Last night game, my team pwn the other team and then they call me using map hack and they ruin the game by SAVING the game which causes SOO MUCH LAG. Until it left with 1v5 lol

I dont know about GGClient, it usually lag when you play there.

Although I rarely use INT heroes, Ogre Magi with a scepter owns hard :P

I get that, if you keep a low profile and focus on farming you can get alot of money but 2 BF costs like 11000 ? Or something.

GGC often lags for me too so I don't play there :( And lots of people using some kind of thirdparty software since GGC doesn't have as strict rules as Blizzard. Hamachi and play with your friends ftw :P

Well first of to ;

Linklink : It worthwhile to know that contradictory to common belief some orb effects do stack. How and which stack is what could be labelled as "secrets of the trade" though once im on my home p.c ill include a table that states it , not very clearly but it shows how u can maximise your items and thus get the best builds.

Oh and though many ppl would say 2 bashers is a good build. no it is not. its a newb build because newbs arent aware of the fact that % chance for bashers is based on a base total so ;
1 basher gives the full amount of %
the second is stacked on top of this , giving only 1/2 of what is should , this contunies for every additional basher u get. Though some may argue that this is still useful , the main problem is bashers are a lvl2 item , meaning overall having more then 1 is a liability. Your much better of getting butterfly as it helps for nrly every hero due to its large amount of bonuses. (evasion/atk spd / dmg)

Though if i was to give a fav hero i would just say agi-primaries in general mainly because they are the fastest naturally , good evasion , good atkspd. Soming for other attrs' costs alot more in items.

Im all up for a dota clan , atleast i know rz has a decent amount of mature ppl on it ^^ , hopeflly that passes on in any clan made under their name.

Orbs that stack are imo a flaw in the map, bug abuse to use I'd say.

For the bashers, I know you don't get another 15/10% but it still helps and for a hero like Spiritbreaker you can really need it, even though there are better items lategame.

DotA clan sure :) Would be fun if we could do some 3vs3 or 5vs5 all-RZ games :P

Also, anyone finding Storm Spirit to be imba? I can honestly say I have never EVER beaten him 1vs1 unless I nuke him to death like 10 times earlygame.

@ neverending ; erm , huskar easy? , if anybody has even a little bit of sense , degen and disable destory him especially when you get the odd smrt guy who thinks 120+ dmg is going to save them , most ints r adept at both of them , so yes , give one strat which u think makes him under the title of "easy to use".

@ linklink ; sorry to say but icefrog is perfectly aware of these 'exploits' so rest assured theyre there to be used ; albiet the more advanced players.

How you ask? Well, it's pretty simple.

DOWNLOAD: http://download2.gg-game.com/client/GGClient_setup.exe

Download the GG Client mentioned in the above link and install the client. Once that is done, you need to register yourself.

REGISTRATION: GG-Game Community - Powered by Discuz!

Register yourself and you will not have a username and a password. Using that data login to your GG Game client and then go to Settings. In settings you will find a tab where all the games that are available on GG are mentioned. All you need to do is edit the link locations to that of the .exe's of the game on your own PC. You'll understand what am talking about once you see it.

Once this is done, all we need to do is log on to any DotA room and once we are in the same room - we can launch the game from the "Start Game" button there and host a game over lan.

NOTE: This is the best method coz Hamachi is limited and this is totally lag free and also does not require a original version of Warcraft III : The Frozen Throne. But it is necessary for all of us to be on the same patch. I am using the 1.21a patch. Only then can we see our games.

Same here but I go for bracers only when I am playing a strength or agility hero. Going for bracers with a Int hero is just waste. Instead we could save the cash for a future item.

I can't agree with you at all. Yes, Huskar isn't as useful as other heroes in a cw/fw or league. When I said Huskar is an easy-to-use character I was relating that to public games. Most public players haven't got the slightest idea of how to "defeat" him. On the other hand of course it all depends on how each of us plays. There might be heroes that are easier for you to play than for me and otherwise.

Yupp GG is pretty lag free and the skill level of dota players is better than in Bnet in my opinion.

And I don't see how Hamachi is limited? In my experience GGC lags like 50% of the time while hamachi works almost everytime. But sure we'll play GGC if that's what you want >_<

Well as it is most heroes have effective counters , and if youve bothered to spend time playing the game you'l know a majority of them.

But that said, most counters arent balanced meaning though evasion is good for evading that dreaded perma bash , its still not good as counters against nuker-ints.

But hey ive never used gg client but it seems simple enough , so lets get playing ^^

Tbh I actually loose a fair game then own a game from the first minute.

I'm so getting tired of public games....I've played 3 games in a row now and they always left after 20~30 minutes >_>!

I played WC3 since RoC on battlenet and it was awesome.

Later when TFT came, there was a big ownage in Europe cos there was like 40% Germans who had no idea how to play and I got up to level 41, then quit. :o

Now I play from time to time DotA since it's pretty interesting and kills the boredom. =)

*(Traxex, Tiny, Tinker, Door Bringer, and Terror Blade (me))

Items that i have:
Treads (agi bonus)
Eye of Skadi
Linkin Sphere
Butterfly
Divine Rapier
Aegis

Sentinel
*(Silencer, Rikimaru, Razor, Mortred, and Medusa)

20 mins after, 3 of my team mate left (1. lag dc, 2. die alot, 3. same with 2).

So we tried to play till the end. Tinker is leading the game. 15 mins later, Tinker got ganked. So he left cause its impossible to play. I stay and continue the fight.

I get and sell the items from my other team mate and try to make my combo, so far, i made Eye of Skadi. Then i start to defend. I tried to hit them one by one as they approaching my base then after 3 mins of attacking, i make my move so i charge on them (got ulti if you know what it is). Lol lucky, i made a triple kills. The other two is farming. So my gold boost to 4K, so im trying to make Butterfly, after farming a lol while, I finally got Butterfly. Then i try to push. Still i own them, after killing 3 of them (again), the other two kill me (no more ulti) so i made like 4K.

2 left cause they got own. So that concludes a 3v1 game. Fight continue, I finally make my way into their base. Made almost 8K. All of their barracks in the middle were destroyed (good advantage for 3v1 game) so i make my way to Roshan and I killed him and got Aegis. So with aegis and i still own them by myself. I make Divine Rapier (OUCH!!!) I make my way to their base on top. They use leavers so its 5v1. lol, i pwn all of them :P. Make my way inside again and destroyed the two barracks. Two more to go. Still, i stay and make my way to the other path. Then i destroyed all of the barracks. MEGA CREEPS lol!!

So i left the base for them to defend, if they can :P. Anyway, i decide to stay and help the creeps out, so i approach their fountain (not going inside) outside and wait and kill. So i kill two then i make my way to the world tree and then its a GG!!!

It it extremely easy for you to get all that money because you are getting the gold for all 5 of you every few seconds... comes up to about 100 gold every 10 secs i think. Too easy to farm items like that, especially in easy mode. How they all got beaten by a terrorblade... i do not know. They must have been extremely bad at DoTA, for Terrorblade has no natural stun, slow, or escape mechanism. U got lucky lol.

Personally, if i was playing stealth assassin, i would have raped you. Many people hate him cos they assume that only noobs play him cos wards/gem completely nulls his ultimate, but thats why i love him. Everyone will ignore you and almost completely forget that you are in the game cos they simply assume that you are a noob and not worth the effort. Then you come out 30 mins in a non-em game with butterfly, sny (may be a "noob" item but i ove it, especially on him), and agil treads. Pure unstoppable rapeage.

They are pro actually, because that i have Divine Rapier in my possession, + the other items, a total of 116+306 dmg. Not to mention i created 2 illusions of myself which each illusion deal 55% of my original attack. They alway hit my illusion because they thought thats the real me but its not and while attacking, they take heavy damage from my illusion and from me. So even a 5v1, i still win cause a damage(116+306 + 2 illusions) like that tear up their HP easily in a short amount of attack. Even if my HP are lowered, i still can use my ulti to fight.

As for Stealth Assassin, i have no problem with him, hes also one of my fav hero. If you were be able to farm well, then your gonna be imba.

PS: i never played a em games in GG. Im playing RD mode with that Terror Blade.

before i play Dota v6.84c were imba hero are medusa ang rikky now some games are balance. now dota is dominating the ph every where ppl here in the ph play dota even a 4yr old kid can play.

Why? Geomancer is the most imba hero in the game, thats why he is banned in league games.

Geomancer is the best hero but only if you can keep up with him/his skills/spells. You gotta be AI-quick to be good :P

One of my "best" games were with Axe and before I left I put him on attack towards sentinel base and got a few kills before going down on the tower XD Noobgame though, wasn't fun!

Zeus with Arcane Ring earlygame (2vs2) can be a real pain in the ass. He simply wont run out of mana and you gotta stay back and heal so you loose exp when he mininukes you :(

Oh and yeah I'm working on a DotA movie...It will have some skill scenes as well as fun scenes. Like one time....I suicided with techies and IN THE EXACT SAME MOMENT my mate used siren's ultimate(sleeps enemies and makes them invincible). Sadly I haven't saved that one I think.

but they added Invoker. Invoker is not a new hero, he was in the older version and has been removed due to functionality that affected the map, so this time they fix him and such and he got added to the map again ;)

Invoker is very hard to play tbh. haha

Lotsa people are going to cry about Invoker imo....if he activates that 1 orb three times, he'll get +63damage on level 25.

yeah but he need spells to survive the fight so he need to combine with different orbs.

Checked out the Invoker today. Oh Man. Is he impressive or wat? I loved him to the core.

yeah he is total pwnage, but he is hard to control though, combining spells can be a bit confusing haha.

Well his skills are insane. I tried against Silencer today and Silence was like hopeless for my first game with Invoker. I just need to get the hang of that char more. It's probably one of the most diff chars to play.

Invoker is gay. Only love this update cos of the item and hero remakes, Better MS for jug, better ult for brood, spec has changed disperse, visage has changed spell, changes to luna's ult range... and cant forget my favourite update for the past year - SNY INCREASE! FUCK YES! Many say SNY is a noob item but i love it to death and even more so now. EULs is now a standalone item with ms increase and permenant cyclone, better agil for lothers... change to drow's ult and omni's heal now does pure dmg... 6.50b ftw :)

Something is really bothering me though, Linken's has a CD of 18 seconds instead of 1 minute...that's a major blow for all those int heroes with single target spells (Lina, Lion etc).

anyway, played him yesterday, first game didnt turn out so well, i have leaver teammate >.< and too many stunners from the other team. Cant do a shit.

on 2nd game, i own all of them haha. Even mortred ;). His meteorite and sonic wave own, great combo.

I always build Malevolence for him, cause he need some regen and attack speed. I just how they change its recipe. easy to build. Then later, i go for skadi.

At late game, since there are too many str hero, i just thought i would go for Mask of Madness for more attack speed. You have like 100+204 damage and your attack speed is lower than your enemy and you cant do a shit. so nuke them with meteorite and sonice wave and attack.

Owch, big nono. No intel should ever get MoM, they simply lack the HP or amour to accommodate for the extra dmg u take while berserk is active.

I once played Rhasta on Deso, cuirass, treads, dagger, aga and guinsoos. Yeah I know, no normal person would do that but it was fun :tongue:

Deso and Assault should only be used for those who already have skills that give -armour like slythereen or templar or bounty or nevermore... and on tanks like tidehunter/axe/mag/ect. Blink dagger is shit now it is not worth the 2.1k gold and can only be used to initiate ganks, not as an escape mechanism since you cannot have been atkd in the past 3 secs and cos the cooldown is too long.
