[PS3] Windows XP question
I have a PS3 and I was thinking, "hey, i can spare 10 GB for windows :D."
- So I go to settings>system settings>install other OS
- i get message saying i need a partition and to go to the format utility to do that
- I go there, choose formad PS3 HDD, Allot 10GB to other OS
then i get this screen:
http://images.tribalonline.net/pics/...a069ab0e01.JPG
- it says some data may be restored for quick format, that kinda told me that data will be erased, and it says that all data will be deleted for full format. how do i create a partition without having everything erased?
- Has anyone ever tried this and got it working?
thanks :)
Re: [Question] Windows XP on PS3
I've done something with consoles/pc before. I used a PS2 emulator to play some games, but never tried this.
Re: [Question] Windows XP on PS3
You can't install windows on PS3. You can tho emulate it by installing linux on the ps3 and then some programs. But it would be useless because when emulating xp your ps3 would work like shit.
So bottomline you can't install windows on it. You can *unix systems tho.

why can't you do it?
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
Because PS3 isn't really a computer, it's a home entertainment system, especially for games. It shouldn't be possible to install *Unix systems on it also but eh. You can't install windows as PS3 doesn't support .exe files and some other stuff.
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
You can get Linux on the PS3 =p

is that why they made it so easy with their "install other OS" feature?
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
Well you need to use that option when you want to install an *Unix system (aka linux). Like Fedora, RedHat, Debian, etc.. They don't have exe files but they do have .bin or something like that (not familliar with linux).
You make a partition on your PS3, and it will erase everything on that specific partition (that is empty btw) when you format it, so you don't loose anything I think. Then you put an *Unix system dvd/cd into the PS3 *-rom. and then you go to the "Install other OS" feature and you should be able to install it.
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
so basically there is no risk of losing data, however i should backup is what your saying?
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
yes. go on youtube, search linux on ps3. or fedora on ps3. theres tutorials how to do it
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question

Because MS don't want to allow Windows to run on the PS3 hardware. The same goes with them not allowing you to run Windows on Mac hardware (without emulation).
Windows is designed to be very chip dependent. So if Windows isn't written for your chip then you can't run Windows on it.
With *nix systems this isn't the case as they are chip independent OSs. That is why they can run on the PS3.

It IS a computer.
And you can install *nix OS's on most systems out there. As it's a dynamic OS can adapt to any environment.
And it's the OS that can support .exe or not. The OS determines how files are executed. And the Windows install isn't a .exe.

No. That feature just repartitions the drive to allow you to have a blank drive for an OS install. Any OS can be installed on the drive but not any OS will work with the hardware.

Depends on how much of the drive you take up. If you have 50gb of data and you partition 20gb of data on your 60gb HDD. Then you will loose a minimum of 10gb of data.

Or even better. Do as Linux users say. RTFM. The PS3 manual tells you how to install Yellow Dog Linux (the distro that Sony supports) on your PS3.
NoPeace - out
Re: [PS3] Windows XP question
alright so i won't lose any data, that is settled, now about linux, i seriously have no idea about it because i have never used it O_o.
