Private Servers as of late...
Im not sure how alot of the community feels on this subject.. but lately I have been getting irritated by this:
But there seems to be a lack of quality private servers being released..
I have personally been checking nearly any new server being released.. and they are either being hosted on a rather slow internet connection with a sub-par computer... or its so basic and boring that no effort was obviously made to make it into anything.
Why bother posting these and wasting our time with having to try checking things to see if they are even worth checking?
24/7? Yeah, joke... I just tried the latest 5 or 6 servers advertised, and well.. none of them are up, havent been up since I have been trying (over the course of 2 days) and in general.. it peeves me off having spent my own time downloading some small (and a few rather large) clients only to be dissapointed by either a lack of professionalism, or a crude sense of balance.
You may have been noticing me posting in all kinds of random areas on the forums, on new server areas.. pretty much giving it blunt to the owners whats wrong with their proposed printout of server stats (rates, time online, etc.. etc..) compared to what is really happening.
I suppose, what I am trying to get at.. is why the hell are you bothering wasting a communities time, such as Ragezone, to not uphold what you are proposing.. I could expect a little downtime here and there, but for a server to go 'Full Release' and not have it on and when it is on, it is a very sub par performance.
Just dang aggrivated I suppose, wasted my entire night trying to find a good T4C server that is relatively new, tried finding a good Ran Online server, L2, and several others, and jsut frustrated by every server failing in what they claim.
Feel free to post any useless comments you may have about this as well! Would love to hear what the general opinion is on this with other folks too =)

Re: Private Servers as of late...
Yeah, I agree. Why bother?
Truth is, a lot of these morons who try to open servers have no knowledge on how to run a server. They want to be in a position of power, or they want 'Donation' money. I don't believe in Altruism tbh. People don't just open servers, just because they're nice so other people can play on them.
However, there will always be a ridiculous amount of shitty private servers. Nothing we can do about it.
-
Re: Private Servers as of late...
The cue off of Donation money comes when you already HAVE an established server...
one of the servers I 'attempted' to try yesterday started up right off with donations..
Who the hellw ould pay hard earned money for a beta pirivate server that hasnt even begun to have aplayerbase yet?

Re: Private Servers as of late...
How about a new Rule for the Ad. sections?
The servers has to be 24/7 available.

Yes, you can have a room, and buy furniture. Anyone who plays it or for that matter, considers it a game, should be shot several times.

Re: Private Servers as of late...
Pretty much.
The "game" element comes from the exceedingly strange roleplays that some of the users have.
For example:
HABBO 1: z0mg! Letz rp!
HABBO 2: mmkaaaiii
HABBO 1: *pulz out gun*
HABBO 2: *drawz swordz*
HABBO 1: *shootz*
HABBO 2: *fallz*
HABBO 1: ye I win!
HABBO 2: *buttshexes*
Etc...

Wow... I would rather have all those young kids looking up pornography than playing a game like Habbo.. at least you get some exercise out of playing with yourself.
I wish there was some sort of collaberative program a user has to download and register theri server on for Ragezone... where it would record server uptime, server name, the actual server population count etc.. etc..
Give us some way of knowing whats running and whats not running.

Re: Private Servers as of late...
Most of the servers are crap and lag, disconnect very often.

Forget the server it's the actual game. It's more of a virtual social enviroment. One that I pitty because everyone who plays it is seriously effed.

I suppose that gives me good reason to never ever attempt it then.. my social life is intact enough for me to get kicks out of real peopel in real chatting scenarios in a pub or dinner area.
Oof, I've been awful tempted to put some of my odl servers back up.. I just dont have the urge to keep my computer on 24/7 like I used to.. makes the electric bill rather expensive.. =)
EDIT: Just changed my profile picture.. meh, I like this one, have had it for ages now =)

Re: Private Servers as of late...
That's why I made mmolist a while ago - it kept track of server stats as well as uptime and current status
Unfortunately that went down the drain when the company that hosted it got hacked and I couldn't be arsed to set it up again since I got a job as PHP coder and liked not having to code in my free time as well
Face it, it's not "as of late", it has always been this way with private servers. There are usually a few good ones that are up almost 24/7 with a nice playerbase and not insane amounts of experience and there are countless thousends that go down faster than a highschool girl's panties. I just stopped being bothered about that and got a subscription to an official game (LotRO), it really is worth the $10 a month or so :icon6:

I just recently forked up the moeny to play EVE-Online as well... a buddy of mine (He was a server administrator and I was a GM for the American release of RYL and RYL 2) and myself both play it now.. Im only about a month old, he is well over a couple years. Constant uptime, and it suits my low hours per day of being available to actually play a game (offline training rules). Was tempted to move back to LOTRO.. played it during its Beta, and never quite made it into playing after it went Gold, work was just too busy for me at the time.

EVE sounds like a great game too, though I've only played it for a really short while in a trial account. LOTRO on the other hand I played in the beta, loved the game, forgot about it since I had a crappy computer at the time and when I actually bought a good computer I pretty much bought it first time I went into a gamestore :icon6:
What I love most about it is the fact that almost everyone is mature and friendly. Every PUG consists of serious players who'll get the job done, got a load of kinship invites and finally joined one that is always there for me if I need a group for questing or some expertise in crafting an item for me, and it's really typical for the entire game. If you compare that with most private servers, and especially the Habbo / MuOnline / WoW servers, it's such a huge difference one can barely believe it.
Though of course I do also have fond memories of those. FrogMu, my first Mu server, got really popular with a small group of GM's I still talk with a lot even now, years later, when FrogMu has been gone for years, and I've played a private WoW server with actually a nice (though small) group of players I enjoyed playing with. Though of course not raiding, since there weren't even enough players online at a time for that

I enjoyed FrogMU :-)
Thats why I lov eEVE-Online.. the professional feeling to the game.. its one of the oldest MMO's out and is just amazing, very adult feel to the game, and its just generally awesoem to play.
When I played LOTRO, I actually had my good ol trusty Lute player =) The way they implement battle with constantly monitoring the monster and yoru friends and having to time yoru combo's to a good chain effect.. just made it so much fun. I may go back to it sometime, i was a fan of crafting my own armor, and having a buddy there to craft weaponry :-)

Re: Private Servers as of late...
I agree with you. I once played on KalOnline private server. Most of them were crap. They had a high exp-/droprate and the server went offline after a few days/1 week. Either way they didn't put enough effort in it or they simply destroyed all the fun with their highrate. A major problem however remains: Most of the players don't like to play on lowrate server. Most of the time these lowrate server however have a lot of unique ingame content that no one else has. Apparently players don't care about unique new stuff that seperates you even more from the international server, they rather want to play on highrate server which have a lifespan of a week at most. I'm still trying to understand that behaviour. I haven't played any other mmorpg private server yet so I my statement applies for Kal and only for KalOnline.

i actually am awful tempted to put up my own style of RAN Online... lots of high rate lots of reborn typ eservers..
I was plannign on setting it to an extremely low exp rate.. and instead of using Reborns for getting stats.. I will change it from teh normal 4 stat poitns per level, to about 10 times as normal.. figure 50 points per level you can distribute, at like half the exp rate per normal... and not having funky shops that sell all the weapons you need and random box drops and crap.. make it tough to get big, but every level is a huge step, instead of needing 20 levels to notice a difference.

Re: Private Servers as of late...
Another major problem I've seen is people that merely understand the basics of a private server and already going public with it, leaving a thousand bugs and exploits for the players to abuse.

I think that's just the nature of priv servers. There will always be bugs and people trying to fix them but it's hard to all work together. You fix two bugs and one more pops up.
Eve online is a really good game. The economy side to it is like every single mmo should be like, to me it is the thing I compare every other games economy against. If no one is selling an item you need, you ain't buying. This leads to supply and demand where remote places items can cost double.
I really did like LotRO as well but their endgame was shit. They made it easy to level so people made 50 in a month but forgot to actually give the lvl50s any content at all. I think they have started to release content now but it just wasn't good enough. Too little, too late for most of the people who played beta. Releasing 40-50 when half the player base is already 50 is just unthinkable imo, they should of made it about 0.6-7 of the current rate and put all 40-50 from the start.
And that's not to mension how much a ripe off of WoW it is, and a bad one at that imo. So many things could have been improved upon but instead they borked it up with things like crafting trophy's needed for rare items. Nice on paper, in practice the mob that drops it gets farmed to death by gold sellers...
Ohh and not all servers are 24/7, eve is 23/7 for one ;)

Yup. Newbs. Don't you hate them.
-
Re: Private Servers as of late...
The real problem is that there are only a handful of people who are serious about their servers. Others are just kids who think it'll be fun to rule over an entire server so they make it for a little bit and then get bored. You also have people who are serious, but don't know what goes into making a serv and wind up having to go down. Keep searching for servers tho, there will be a a great server that pops up. Oh and it has indeed always been this way. I still remember all the crappy MU servers i had to go through just to find a nice one.

Well, thats how a server gets better, when they let people find bugs and exploits so they can fix it. Every server is bound to have a few bugs here and there.

I'm talking about major exploits such as selling items for more money than you've purchased them.(Merchant). I'm talking about exploits that lead to total destruction of a server's economy ---> reset ---> less people play ---> server closed.
