Obviously not Windows Vista..
Windows XP?
Windows Server 03 or 08?
Any Guidelines?
Anyone know what OS a big server is running on.. e.g. WoWScape?

Windows Server 03 is the best...
Or Red Hat...But you said windows
I would use Win XP SP2 if u really insist on windows.
yea, most revs and repacks are easily availiable for windows, but i think they cannot keep up with the stability of your own compile on a linux box.
i would recomend debian here
EDIT: Yea, red hat works too, but i would really suggest debian, compiling ascent (and running it for long periods) is way easier in my experiance
Why are all the releases for windows then?
cos most people use windows anyway ;)
also it seems to be less work setting up.
but i mean i tried 8 win releases and my 1st linux compile owned them all xD
it basically just the smoothness the server runs at in the end..
the db so all the fancy teleporter people, the malls etc, are in the DB, which is normally compatible all around ascent.
Seb
XP SP2...no
Windows Server 2003 if you want to go windows...
All of them are for windows...cuz its easier for noobs XD...
ah well, never tried 2003, but heard xp was better, still use linux
Naa 2003 is better for servers...Less of a memory hog...and yes i agree linux is way better
^^ yea
i know abut wow scape has their own emu but they run on windows
They dont have their own emu...
They have either mangos or ascent that is modified to their liking and called it their own
yes...their ascent :)
Exactly...
yea, dont like it ^^
but i edited the core a lil too, but ah well ^^
Ya i got flying mounts in azeroth instant 70, 61 talent points...all players ported to shopping mall...and LookingForGroup channel is the world channel again...
ZOMG I GOT MY OWN CORE "Project JAR Core" lmao....
Unix - Ubuntu <- I run this for the database server. (Database)
Windows - Windows 2003 Datacenter <- I run this for the servers and it's great. (Ascent+Login)
Windows XP can cut it for a it on a new server but it won't last forever, just turn off all the goodies such as XP GUI.
We have plans to go 100% Unix based servers as Linux is great but Unix I find is more stable for such a hosting task. I run a small hosting company and wouldn't touch something like FC or Red Hat. Could look into CentOS too very stable for hosting needs.
Ubuntu is debian based. :D So the guide you can find here http://forum.ragezone.com/f114/ascen...server-368969/ will work the same.
If you plan to go that big I would get a super box for the servers and a smaller slower not SLOW but not so high end server for the database. It's so much better and can we say no roll backs.
Agreed
