Yes I've had the same problem in the past. The popups from ragezone from time to time are infected with crap, even if I don't download anything voluntarily.

Lol yes they can, it's really not all that hard to do. Go to some very horrible websites online, but don't download anything. If you have no virus/spyware protection and probably even if you do, I almost guarantee you will still end up with some viruses and/or spyware.
That being said i've also had trouble in the past with ragezone popup's but not for awhile.
