Ye so march 29 (saturday) 8pm local time, there will be a earth hour where you shut off as many, or all of your lights, and electronics to help make the planet greener.
Ima try to participate, how bout you?
Btw if you are, remember to unplug everything, as it will save more power.

Global warming being caused by humans is BS. Also the faster we use up all the fossil fuels the better and sooner petrol companies will be forced to research new sources (instead of buying them and stopping progress)
Who comes up with these hour things anyway? What a stupid idea, like an hour is going to change anything. They should of spent their time designing energy saving/more efficient appliances. Getting everyone to use energy efficient light bulbs would save loads more power than switching off for an hour.
This is as pointless as 1 min silences, like dead people care if you remember them or not. Self gratification only.

Oh and the power that might of been saved isn't really going to be saved. The generators that are making the power will still be turning. Only because people have switched off the load it's going to be very unbalanced and thus waste huge amounts of power. I wouldn't be surprised if this would waste more power than just leaving them on frankly. Basically they try to balance each phase of the power system to make the system efficient, mass turning off the load of one phase (which is likely as other phases are norm used for factories which I doubt will be participating) unbalances it and thus wastes power.
But I guess they didn't really think very carefully about the whole thing. I feel kinda sorry for the generator techs, they are going to have one hell of an hour tomorrow :p I bet they didn't even bother asking a power systems engineer how this would actually effect the power system. I'm going to put my money on limited to no change...

Not really, I just try to find reasons for not to do things. I did a course in power systems so I know it's a lot more complicated than just switching stuff off. I think the public just thinks it's a case of a big red off/on switch or something when really you have these huge turbines.Quote:

These work on a system where they make power for 3 lines (phases). Basically they do this as when they are balanced they can be all joined together at the end of the circuit which means 1 less wire in the system. Turning lights off unbalances that system and the power has to go somewhere.
I'm with Robert here. While I'm all for change and environment, this hour is simply for show. It isn't going to do much at all. And all you are saving is some money. You aren't "saving" power. You just aren't using the power that is being generated anyway. Its a statement, it isn't a movement for action. 90% of the people doing it, will go ahead with it, but then they'll forget about doing anything for the environment. As long as you guys actually remember and continue trying to help the environment, it's fine.
