losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
a small piece im writing for my new website, let me know what you think of it so far.
--
A lot of people in this country want to lose weight. Sometimes for health and sometimes for asthetic reasons, the big problem they all share is they have no idea how to go about it.
Sure we are told to eat less fatty foods and to exercise more but wait a minute, without fat the body will die! And just exactly how much, is more?
People are never sure what to eat but truth be told if we stopped listening to the big companies on TV and listened to our bodies, we would know exactly what to eat. How many times have you fealt a little hungry and thought "I'll get something to eat later"
The sensation of hunger is there to tell you to eat now! Not in half an hour, not after you have finished your report and not after the meeting! Your body wants food now and that is exactly what you should give it. Hunger is also there to let us know when to stop eating, how many times have you been told to finish what's left on your plate? Under-eating, over-eating and plain eating at the wrong time are major reasons why most people are unhealthy.
Your body is a very adept machine indeed and has a nice little mechanism which will help you to maintain a healthy and good looking body. This is your metabolic rate and it works based on how often you eat, what you are eating and how you exercise. (editor - This is meant to read "how you exercise" and not "how much you exercise".)
Your metabolic rate (your metabolism) works with a very simple equation, if you taking in more energy than you are using, you will begin to store fat, this can then be burnt for energy at a later date. It really is very clever, you see every second of the day, even when you are inactive you are burning energy. We normally measure the energy in calories, every action, even just sitting there breathing and reading this will take some energy. The more intense the action the more calories it will take.
Our bodies are very efficient at what they do unfortunately they haven't quite caught up with our industrial revolutions in terms of evolution, we operate much in the way you would expect a caveman to. If you are eating well and exercising sufficiently your metabolism will be higher and you will feel energising as you are constantly burning energy, even when not exercising. However is you are not active and your diet is poor you will feel sluggish and tired. This is important to keep in mind as in caveman terms you might not have all this food available to you a day from now so your body rather cleverly stores more energy as fat to be saved for when food is low. The problem for us then is not ever having too little food, but having too much!

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Ya but some people cant tell when theyre hungry, when theyre not, when they ate to much or too little. Good guide though.

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
So true but I don't see the connect to the adverts since they don't tell you not to eat or do a lot of exercise, they just tell you to buy some products, right?

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Very truthful and good. Thats advice I've been following myself for a while. I like it.

yeah some people have medical conditions that effect their sense of hunger, either they have none or that they never switch it off, they will have to approach their diet in a way that reflect supon their individual situation
for the rest of us, it really is as simple as listening to your body and watching out for the signs, being honest with yourself

adverts are very clever because they do not outright say "this is good for you" or "this will make you happy" if they did they would mostly be ignored
you pay attention to the next mcdonalds, kfc or brger king advert you watch, look how positively their products are displayed, of course they look desireable. the adverts justify the use of the product they sell it to you through very basic marketing. because people take the tv as gospel they are easy targets to sell any old nutrition devoid crap too

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Very good, article. Also, here's something you might want to write about.
When you go on a diet, you eat less with the thought that your body will use fat as an energy source. This is only partly true. Your brains needs sugar, while fat gets converted to glycogen, which your brains can't use. The solution to this? Your body starts to consume itself normally this isn't too bad, as it only happens when you're doing intensive physical activity. But if you're doing this longterm. Your muscle tissue will grow weaker, and if you're doing it real bad, ureum will get in your blood, which can lead to heart complications. So if you're going to diet, use a good dieting program.
Hope it's some use to you exy.

Too many MMORPGs?
I feel that it's very important to keep your body weight at a healthy level or at least close to, if for no other reason than the risk of more health related problems later in life.

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
lol yeah definately an mmorpg related typo there

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Great short there. I must say I HATE people with extremely fast metabolisms. I have a friend who does nothing but sit around and eat aallll day, and he's only like 160lbs.
If I even tried to eat like him I'd die within a week!

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
What about eating after 8 o clock, etc etc?

there little to no evidence to suggest eating late has any difference to eating any other time of day, an urban myth it would seem

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
aye a calorie is a calorie even after midnight :P

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Its just that some people moaned, not eat after ''this time'' or you'll get more fat then usual.
Now I can atleast respond properly.

But if you eat during the day, you have places to burn it off and before you know it its burned, where you gonna burn off 600 calories after 8 though?
-
Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Initiate, I usually train after 8.

your metabolism is running 24/7/365, it does not stop simply because you are asleep. i see what you are saying but any excess energy can be burnt off the following day, that is of course if you dont burn them in your sleep or waking up which takes plenty of energy.
the problem is when people consume large amounts of calories late at night then dont exercise the next day, consume the same amount of calories late the next night, sleep, wake dont exercise so on and so forth :P

Is that you're current weight? If so, how tall are you?

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Well personally i been starting to eat in the morning again, i didn't eat for ages in the morning, and like you said, your body will start to store fat for later usage, so if you don't eat in the morning then your body will just start storing and you are worse off then that you would just eat something.
The reason i didn't eat in the morning was because i just didn't feel like it, i used to go to bed to late, which made me tired in the morning and i didn't feel like doing anything. These days i go out of bed about a hour earlier (going to bed a hour earlier aswell) so then i can just get out of bed relaxed, do all my stuff, even go on the internet or watch something (watched South Park this morning), and still have enough time to eat something and go to work/school.
While i don't know how much it's doing for my weight (although i'm sure it has a positive effect) i definitely feel better, not just in the morning, but throughout the whole day.

Re: losing weight, listen to your body not the adverts
Well media obviously control a lot of things, including what to eat what not to eat, how much to eat, etc.
Media portrays the perfect women as being as slim as possible, and eating very little.
And the guys as buff guys weighing like over 200lbs.
And then people just model themselves slowly to fit in to that, through very extreme methods, over-eating and under-eating.
Anyways, good article, but people usually just follow the media rather then their body's needs.
