[360] RRoD concerns.

Hi guys, just thought I'd make a post as I've been looking around and there isn't any great answers for what I'm asking. Basically I'm buying a 10 month old Xbox 360 from a friend of a friend it's going for a good price and I like the games it comes with so I thought i'd go for it.

They are selling it due to having a PS3 and there has never been any problems with it, how ever it got me thinking after them owning it for 10 months and having no problems is this a good or a bad thing?

Now personally I wouldn't normally buy a second hand console how ever it's a good offer and I haven't even got a PC at the moment so it was very appealing to me. And it's either the choice of buying an xbox premium and having no games to play on or having this.

What do you guys think, it's a decision that in the end I can't afford to mess up.

PS : I've heard the attachable fans also help keep it cool and prevent the RRoD.

Call MS and see if the warranty is transferable. If so then there is no real reason not to get it. If it RRoDs then you return it to MS and they'll give you a new one.

well, it's not a new one... just a fixed one. I think the warranty would be transferrable.

Yeah get the warranty transfered like what NP said. I personally wouldn't buy a 360 when it's 10 months old as they tend to break within the first year. I heard a rumour that the cooling fan caused a hardware/mechanical error giving it the RRoD? Not too sure, though. My little brother used it on his 360, and it still managed to break at 6 months old.

Yea, that's what i heard to, and saw on the web and stuff. DO NOT USE THE COOLING FAN! lol

Nyko cooling fans seem to be the ones that cause the problems but others seem to be decent.

Find out how long they play it for every day, and if they used a fan. If they played it allot and never used a fan then thats something to worry about.

They don't send you back yours fixed or a refurb one, I've broken 3 and got in return brand new ones for all of them.

rrod can happen for any reason, just because someone played it alot doesn't mean its gonna break quicker, i played mine a lot for the first year then stopped playing it almost completely, came back to it late in the 2nd or early 3rd year and it broke when i was playing morrowind goty. If it has gfx glitches which require it to be switched of at the plug then its on its way out, mine did this 3 times then it wouldn't revive, as far as im aware some of the fans void the warranty so i wouldn't use one.

Not any more. They replace all the units with the new up to date models that have been redesigned not to die as easily.

Why fix it and have to fix it again in a few months?

RRoD is usually the result of the system getting too hot and the solder comes loose from the board. Causing a hardware failure.

Not really down to the fan as they work as they should. It's down to sloppy engineering.

As for them dieing. They die at random times. Some after a few weeks and others after many months. My second one died the day before I had it for a year. Go figure on that. :glare:

All add on fans are bad. They disrupt air flow and drain the power the system is using.

Thus resulting in power instability and increased temps. Kind of the opposite of the reason why you buy it. :icon6:

That has nothing to do with it. I've used my second one about 8 hours a day for a year before it died while someone I know only used it 4 hours a week and it died in 2 months.

I wouldn't worry to much, if it dies then they will pick it up and you will get a new 1 in no time.

Also why do people keep calling it the RRoD... i mean is there another ring of death that isn't red?

Thanks for the replies people only just manged to come on and check this, when I talked to the seller personally it turns out it's not had much use but has no warranty (I thought they all had 1 year warrantys) anyway I'm gonna go pick my self a brand new one up next friday.

they all had a 3 year warranty against the RRoD, and it should have a 1 year warranty from the purchase date.
