I only use VLC when i have to, otherwise i prefer using Winamp for music and WMP for video, i do use WMP for standard playback of music though, but that's because if i got a playlist (which i usually make out of a bunch of songs i like to hear that moment) it will ditch it when i open a file, atleast it used to back in the day, so i started using WMP for when i just clicked a song as i couldn't be bothered to put the playlist back together everytime, or constantly save them.
VLC is best to watch videos (no other media players come close). But I prefer to listen to music using WMP11 (easy to set up with external buttons on laptop). Winamp is OK... they have trippy visualizations but that's all.
Winamp for music and BSplayer for vids.
with uber codec packs I have no problems with anything. get some codecs so you can play realplayer files in mediplayer and your done.

I forget why I didn't want to use Winamp anymore, so I'm using that again. iTunes isn't bad as a music player, I just don't like it.
