Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
STOP Virgin: Keep Virgin from destroying the Internet
[youtubevid]AA5ZR_jxdXU[/youtubevid]
Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they're already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don't pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network.
This is not the first time an internet provider infringes upon net neutrality, but it is the first time that an ISP so brutally states that they simply plan to limit internet access to a television-like system in which the access provider completely regulates the content you have access to.
Virgin Media has over 3.5 million customers in the UK and the real danger is that when they start applying this system to their network, all major internet providers around the globe will soon follow the trend. Because this is exactly what major ISP's have been wanting to do for years.
But we can stop it.
If the masses of the internet react against this, we will set an example of what happens when one provider tries to take away our freedom. We will make it very clear that any ISP who tries to infringe upon net neutrality will see its popularity go down the drain because the users don't accept it. And we'll see to it that only the providers who care about safeguarding our internet freedom have our support.
Speak out in any way you can and spread the word.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I read about this a few hours ago, virgin are trying to cap there service of world of warcraft and asking blizzard to pay up or else be put on a so called "bus lane". That's why this info is listed on movielol.
Simply just change ISP. If they want to fuck about with your net, there is plenty of other ISPs you can go to
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Wow, I never did trust Virgin Media. I prefered NTL: because I could at least trust them.
How exactly can we stop a company thats worth millions?

Boycott any provider, money loss = closed company.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
why did I get the feeling that the jugs was only there for users to click the video :(.
Anyways, I'm pretty happy to live in Sweden. There's NO ISP known in Sweden that have limited amount of download every month and such and I pretty much doubt it would EVER happen to us since we're such a small population - they loose more than they get.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Wow...that is fucked up, I can see Rogers and Bell (Major companies in Canada) following through with that as well. Rogers is already bringing in restrictions on Download Upload rates and amount...setting up different classes depending on how much money you pay, which it wasn't like before.
I enjoy my freedom on the internet, going wherever I want...whenever I want.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Well if the only way is to spread the word... then word spreading it is.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
tiscali does the same thing with EVE online. they used to block me from the server during peak hours until i sent them a printscreen of a tracert -r i did to the EVE server which showed they were blocking it. all you need to to is threaten legal action and call them comunists and you'll be unblocked.
before virgin did this wouldnt they have to get everyone to aggree to the new terms and conditions?
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I don't live in the UK, but if they tried that here I'd immediately cancel my subscription. What a mormonic thing to do, limit speed just because they aren't getting paid more.

50Mbps Trial
Virgin Media / BT ADSL2 are doing a 50Mbps Trial in Birmingham, UK. I don't know all of the details yet, but the trail will start soon. You have VM in your area to be able to get on it, and it is free for the trial.
Virgin Media 50 Mbps Pilot should be the signup address
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Frankly and honestly I think this "trend" will not catch on at all on other major ISPs... because Virgin Network will loose so many user so fast... and before they can realize what a big fuk up they made... they would be hated by 3.5 mill of their users and other tens of millions of people across the internet for trying to pull this shit... their userbase would go down and where would those people go to?... thats right... other ISPs which haven't adopted this "trend" yet and which would be more than glad to juice up from the Virgin's userbase and also be way too scared to adopt the trend so they won't end up like Virgin to loose allot of users...
Like the saying "there's always a bigger fish in the sea"... I say there's always gonna be major ISPs that will offer the good old fashion internet and those ISPs would get technically tons of money...
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
thats pretty fcked up. Should create a petition on this

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I cannot see them investing all the money they have in the 50mb trial just to risk everyone boycoting them
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I think buying out NTL: has been Branston's biggest mistake. NTL: did well before they were bought out, Virgin can't provide good quality home entertainment. Our Virgin Media box freezes all the time, our internet is incredibly slow and their service is terrible.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
There was a message there? I was too busy contemplating that awesome rack!
All seriousness though, I'm with Virgin and have been noticing the bollocks speeds, although I just figured it was due to a massive contention ratio after them swallowing NTL. Would ditch em but there's nothing else close to their speeds (even considering how crap they are, compared to what they're meant to be) around here.

Just to add to that, NTL give you what they say they will. Unlike some* providers. Well, the video came as quite a shock to me, virgin media sure as hell have done alot since coming about.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
This is an absolute outrage. In what ways can we speak out? Is there a gathering place for everyone to complain? A petition to sign? This sort of thing has to be stopped. It is utter bullshit and all they are doing it for is their own selfish reason, and they don't even need that sort of money income. I feel as if huge rights are being violated here, and that is never right.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Thats why net neutrality needs to be enforced with legislation, to keep these ISP providers from throttling their service.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I agree with SiGGy, Virgin has good speeds but not all the time. I have the XL package, which means I get unlimited(?) bandwidth and a 20Mbps connection speed/Download speed. I get god knows how little bandwidth, a 11Mbps connection line (and even thats slow) and a pathetic 60Kb/ps DL speed.
Say bye bye to good, fair interwebs.
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Millions? Virgin are huge.
A few million won't get you far in the 21st century.
Virgin is invaluable.
And I doubt leaving their service will 'put them out of business' because:
Their funds are limitless and sustainable.
People who use the net for simple things like ebay and amazon don't reall 'understand'.
And no, I don't think all ISPs will follow the trend, simply to be 'the only one left' if you get me.
All because one mega-company is doing something drastic doesn't mean the less bigger companies are going to say "oh, well if they're doing it, fuck it we'll do it too. We want that audience god dammit. And what's better than providing the same thing everyone else is providing them?". It doesn't make sense.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
Meh, this could be ended when another ISP takes Virgin's little "We fuck our users over" acts to their advantage and say "Hey guys Virgin is limiting your internet access, if you switch from us you can get the same + more a little less money"
Then Virgin is fucked, they're basically leaving themselves open to get OWNED by other ISP's I wont be surprised when a smaller ISP takes advantage of this and becomes bigger than Virgin itself :]
-
Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
If i recall, Virgin cannot limmit the content you view, or what you can or cannot build, You have the right to Build what ever you want, post what ever you want, build what ever site, server, tutorial ect. im almost positive they cant limit the content viewed. would be Breaking a law. that the FCC them self put into act.

Either they have balls of steel or are really stupid. Stuff like this wouldn't happen in Australia, because everyone would just boycott the ISP. What idiots, they will lose heaps of money once it hits the newspapers and the media properly.

I can understand a minor rebellion, but going to war? The majority of internet users I doubt know what the hell they're doing anyway. And most of them will regurgitate any phrase/slogan you throw at them.

Anyways, I think companies CANNOT and SHOULD not be allowed to do that. Basically, by monitoring your network usage, they are invading your privacy, which (I don't know about Europe) is illegal here. Fuck Virgin Media!

I'm just rather sad that I'll be among the first to be effected.

when we lose rights like this, others follow suit, look at america, shit look at england. losing a little freedom leads to losing a little more untill we have none left at all. "1st they came for the jews."

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
I don't think every ISP would follow this 'slow lane' trend because there's money to be made. Say Virgin and Telewest both put this method into action, people leave them due to their restraint of service and providers like Sky and Tiscali are there to offer them full internet access. There's gonna be a loss leader in this and it's gonna be Virgin.

Re: Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...
More infomation. If VM are talking about TV like it seems they are (and yes I am on the Internet TV trial) then YES the BBC should pay for them to air there programs via there BB service, like any other company that would be showing it would. The BBC takes money from us so we can veiw it, why should we pay?
Taken from Virgin Media mops up CEO's 'boll*cks' outburst | The Register
Virgin Media (VM) today moved to calm fears that it will start throttling web video from providers who refuse to hand over a levy to deliver their content.
A spokesman for the firm said it does not intend to hinder access to content providers who do not pay. Rather, VM could offer content providers deals to upgrade their provisioning if they want to ensure best access to to broadband subscribers.
The BBC already does that via direct peering with the VM network, to offer faster iPlayer access. That link sees no money change hands. "It could be argued that that's a non-neutral solution," the spokesman said.
VM said it would not seek to press others to follow suit by interfering with its customers' link to the wider internet. "We strongly support the principle that the internet should remain a space that is open to all and we have not called for content providers to pay for distribution," its statement said.
"However, we recognise that as more customers turn to the web for content different providers will have different needs and priorities and, in the long term, it's legitimate to question how this demand will be managed. We welcome an informed debate on this issue."
Speculation of a bid by VM to squeeze cash from content provders has been sparked by comments made by CEO Neil Berkett, reported by the Royal Television society magazine. "This network neutrality thing is a load of bollocks," Television said he charged at a conference in February.
Berkett reportedly said video providers who don't pay for technical ways around the congestion on the wider internet might effectively end up in slow "bus lanes". That comment has been seized upon by net neutrality advocates as evidence of a conspiracy to turn the screws on the BBC and other broadcasters.
VM's spokesman said Berkett's statements had been taken out of context, insisting: "We're not suggesting there will be any denial of access to those who don't want to pay."
The firm currently operates bandwidth throttling at peak times, but unlike many other ISPs does not use deep packet inspection technology to single out classes of traffic, such as peer-to-peer. The heaviest five per cent of users are simply slowed down across the board.
The cable firm today argued that its upcoming 50MBit/s network upgrade makes it well placed to serve the boom in internet video, whether big providers want to get involved in network issues or not. Other ISPs led by Tiscali, who buy bandwidth from BT, have called on the BBC to help pay for the cost of distributing shows online.
Tiscali's stance has invoked anger from broadband subscribers who rightly blame the internet industry for years of false marketing of "unlimited" packages, all the while introducing ever-more stringent traffic management policies in the background.
Yet it seems increasingly clear that someone's going to pay the price for the UK's lack of investment in a modern internet infrastructure. We suspect you can draw your own conclusions as to who it's looking like that'll be.

Again, you should know, with such a big mass of money and power backing a cause/idea, and the media on their side, it is very hard to convince people differently, than what they've been told.

What about a boycott against all virgin media. We just stop buying what there selling.
The net neutrality movement has been going on for a while now if you use google you can find if your local representative supports net neutrality is against it, or hasn't made up his mind on it, as well as send them a letter or email to state that your for net neutrality.
And oh ya,,,, and if that fails and your goverment tells these isps its ok that they throttle and control there users internet access than there's always armed rebellion.
