It's because the PS3 is very high-tech and up-to-date. Why bother releasing the PS4 in three years time when the PS3 is still to have its hype?
8 years would be stupid though, just think about how crap 8 year old games look now.
I'd say a console should last about 4-5 years, after that time there has been so much improvement in hardware, that it's worth buying a new console.
You have to remember that i stopped buying PC parts when i got a 360, so instead of upgrading my PC, i would just buy a next gen Playstation or Xbox.
