Why do you smoke?

Well, I really wanted to know from a long long time as to why people smoke (normal ciggies .. not weed ) ....

Some of the common reasons I got are -
1. Style - they smoke either to look cool or to show off ..
2. Habit - now it's become a part of my life ... hard to get rid off ..
3. Time Killer - when I got nothin to do, I smoke ... just to kill time ..
4. Buzz - I do it for the minor buzz that comes in now and then while smoking ...

Well as for me, what started off as Style Smoking is today a habit that am not addicted to but cant get rid off either ...

Why do u smoke?

First I did it, 'cause I thought it would help, ignoring the medical shit, after that I just did it as a habit, or as you say time killer. (Not smoking anymore anyway).

I dont smoke, but i have a few friends who do, and they say its a good stress reliver, not sure how it is, but thats what i am told.

Well, it does help relieve stress. Like when am pissed off at someone, a smoke surely helps. And it kinda has other advantages too like for e.g.: helps in constipation ... lol .. not kiddin ... :P

A younger friend of mine smoked, only 16, and he had heart problems. He passed away a few days ago and I have no doubt smoking took a few years off his life.

I don't smoke though.

Don't and never will smoke. There no advantages from it whatsoever. It simply kills you. Relieves stress? There's so many other ways to do it. Constipation? Get a laxative. If you're gonna go ahead and smoke something, smoke some weed. It won't kill you and it is awesome.

You cant overdose on a cig. You Can overdose on weed. its happend around here. mabey im wrong?

I for one wont smoke.

You cannot overdose one weed. You can technically overdose on cigs. Too much cigs and your lungs get fucked up the arse. Of course, weed isn't great for your lungs either, but it's way more healthy (if you get good stuff, not crap)

You can overdose on almost anything, especially with chemicals. Too much THC in your body is not good. If drinking too much water can kill you, surely can marijuana.

Ok this is slightly going offtopic, but there is 0 recorded overdoses on Marijuana. You simply smoke it in. The only way i see you dying from it is shoving it into your mouth and choking or taking in too much smoke and forgetting how to breathe. Anyway, this is totally offtopic. As i said the reason I don't smoke is that it gives you absolutely nothing. I get what people are saying when they say it relieves stress and whatnot, but thats all in their heads and due to it being an addiction.

I don't smoke, but I believe that it may "relieve," your stress now, but when you're older you will be all stressed out when you get cancer.

Not really. I smoke but I can clearly say I am not addicted. Coz if I have something else to do, I can stay without a smoke. I did so in the past and can do it even now. It's just that when I run out of things to do, is that I look up at a smoke mostly to kill time but not coz am addicted.

Smoking was a good stress reliever when i was having a hard time at home (Family problems & General stress)

Then i just smoked to pass the time & if somebody else was (Why not - Its good for socialising)

Unfortunately now, if i don't have one every few hours (Time Decreases when i've had a drink) i get really stressed out and annoyed easily.

So now i can safely say I've got to be addicted. I smoke to stop myself from getting pissed off now - But hey i feel so much happier and friendlier when i've got cigs than when i don't - So for the moment i see no benefit in quitting (The 'Years off my life' are going tobe when i'm old anyway - And tbh those years i can't see myself being all that interesting)

The addiction causes you to feel stressed. If you don't smoke for a while then your body will start asking for it, so when you finally do smoke your body feels relaxed. Anyway to say it makes you relax is crap basicly as you won't feel any better then a regular person would, as you just give your body what it wants to feel normal.
So yes it is in their heads, yes it does feel real to them, but they are just taking away something to give it back later again to feel better, so really what is the use to it?

I personally have never smoked, well except for weed (no joints btw, won't touch them), and i will definitely never try smoking, it's a disgusting habbit that is very bad for you (i'm not even going to talk longterm, just think short term like being out of air much faster and coughing a lot more - at certain points people almost cough out a long everyday) and costs you shitloads of money.

Smoking makes as much sense as paying someone to hit you in the face, or drive a car over you or whatever...

I had tobacco and rizla but no weed so I thought I'd smoke one, after I did I said never again. next day was getting drunk at a mates since a few of us decided to have a party, ended up being offered one and in my idiocy I didn't decline and I've been smoking ever since.

been trying to cut down lately in order to quit though, training and life in geneal has made cigarettes less necessary for me and they just don't have the same affect as they used to.

no chance in hell I'm quitting mary jane though, she's too much of a beautiful mistress.

cig is an add to alcohol for me. when i'm not drinking i don't smoke. Never got used to it and never got addicted, but was close to it once or twice... i think i should stop smoking at all.

Yeah that's the same with me, for me it's a conversation starter, like when I'm out with like mate or two I just go up to random hot chicks that I know they smoke, and ask if I can have a siggie or a light and then it just gets a conversation rolling next thing you know your in a car driving around with them, I only really do it socially from time to time to get a conversation started.

It became as a style but then it kinda went on as an habit and i liked having my beer while i had a smoke. I stoped smoking 3 months ago, and i advise everyone to do the same i feel better and i already gained 4 - 5 kilos of weight ^_^
i weighted 60 kilos 3 months ago =p so yeah i am glad i quit smoking (b^.^)b

OFFTOPIC----Well Weed is bad as much as cigs, smoking weed will not give you the exact diseases that cigs does, but instead they give you different ones (Sometimes worse than cig)
In the end they're both bad for you and you should stay away

It's quite sad to see the 'bigger' brains of the forum smoke i find smoking terrible it's discusting as for you saying it helps you stop getting pissed off that is rubbish you are telling yourself that and now your brain is programed to think that too im pretty sure there are better and 'free' methods to release stress when i get pissed off i abuse people in my brain and on paper and then i simply draw a picture of whats pissing me off.

As for weed i use to but it just started to make me paranoid after a while so i gave it up which made me paranoid even more. Weed is only a mentally addictive drug if not smoked in joints with tobacco, most people smoke it because there mates do or somebody they look up to does, its not big and its not hard and it does have side effects which one day you will discover if you smoke it...

well first i did it too socialize and for style i guess .. i was well against it befor i had my first one .. now its just a bad habit .. it doesnt really give me the *buzz* it used to probly because my body got used to it... and it doesnt help when everyone u are around does it aswell.:juggle:

I don't think that's true, because (I think) Nicotine is a chemical like most others which won't leave your system till it's used up by cells. And cells have the habit of storing chemicals in membranes called lysosomes much like you and me store fat. That's why you get physical withdrawal symptoms only after a certain amount of time. (Usually 3 to 5 days)

I don't personally smoke,
but I can understand why people do it.
My mom personally does it because of stress.

Smoking doesn't make me look cool, I make smoking look cool.

With so much extra time to kill, shortening our lifespan doesn't seem so bad afterall.

Truly though, sometimes there is something I want to do that I wouldn't have the patience to do unless I was smoking at the same time, i.e. sitting outside and listening to music for long periods of time. It's similar to how lots of people get much more reading done while pooping than while in the library.

Addiction.

Nicotine is a stimulant, after using it often it becomes addicting. Thats why, one of the way of quitting smoking is using the nicotine patch.

Ok this topic is getting retarded... if i say it doesn't look cool, then it doesn't look cool. You see, to make such a bold statement about it looking cool, then people would have to agree with it, and i don't agree with it.

If you think it's cool then that's YOUR opinion, but don't make statements (or agree with them) that it does look cool whether people believe it or not... the fact that he used that last part said enough really, as he obviously knows a lot of people don't believe it, and i tend to think that the people who don't believe it, share my opinion, and thus a large portion of people don't agree.

Even among the key group where people start smoking, around 14 year olds, then you will still find a large group who thinks smoking is not cool, and infact stupid.

So if you want to speak for yourself, then do so, if you want to speak about a portion of the people then so be it, as we all know that a portion thinks it's cool, but don't say in general that it is cool, because this opinion is definitely not shared by everyone, and it's my believe that the majority don't believe it's cool either (that includes smokers btw)

Actually it sounds retarded but it really aint. From what I've seen, a great number of smokers I've come across spontaneously give this answer when they are asked why do they smoke.

I mean, it pretty much sounds like stupid to actually think of a social status but its right like Ryan said. When a whole bunch of people around you are actually smoking and somehow it strikes your brain that leaving smoke out your mouth might actually make it look cool, people pretend to start off smoking for that reason.

It's an opinion, stop making it sound like a fact. Perspective is everything, just because you think it's uncool doesn't make you any more right than someone who thinks it's the coolest thing you can possibly do.

Because Killing my lungs is a hobbie of mine.

Because I don't agree with the "smoking makes you look cool" statement it just sounds pretty funny to me lol because I obviously don't see it in the same way as the people that believe smoking does look cool.

As for the idea of smoking in general, it's not something I do. But after the last RaGEPARTY and Lee's Stag I've decided that I'll only smoke Weed during "special occasions" so to speak like at the next RaGEPARTY when we all gather together. As for it's addition it will be something I can never truly understand because I'll never allow myself to reach that point.

Please read the posts. The only fact that i'm stating is that theirs is not a fact. In the last few posts facts can been seen that theirs is absolutely not a fact at all.

We're all going to die eventually, sucking a few niccy sticks to speed up the time is no big deal, tbh the 'hit' is worth the time it takes off. Sorry I can't think of how else to describe the feeling of that much needed smoke, other than 'hit'

Dying earlier might not seem to matter that much now, but later it could, but considering there are many ways to die, i do agree that it's not a real reason to stop for.

However smoking has some bad short term effects aswell, it smells bad to non-smokers (non-smokers also prefer not to have a smoker as a partner), costs a lot, your air intake is worse causing you to get out of air faster and thus tired and later on you will cough a lot, including really bad coughing daily because of all the crap.

Smoking has no advantages, only disadvantages.

Have to agree, the short term effects do put me off alot, and if anything at all, they would be the reason(s) for me to stop, tbh I don't want my lungs to be used in a government ad to put smokers off. So I guess they did the job for me. But I am yet to even try quitting.

Smoking = Epic Failure.

Smokers think smoking is cool. Non-smokers think smoking is not cool. There are actually MORE non-smokers around here, so MORE people think smoking is not cool, so what's the point of trying to be cool in front of people who thinks it's uncool? <.<

My point is, don't make that argument if you're going to say smoking is not cool. That's all. Not with the cool thing but, you're paying shitloads of money on food that longterm, harms you

Ofcourse, i personally hardly ever buy it. Besides not all fastfood is bad for you, nor is it addictive.
