Dot-com era brought to an end
Quote:
The .com era was brought to an end yesterday as internet regulators allowed thousands of new domain names.
In one of the biggest change to the web in its 25-year history, businesses were given the all-clear to apply for suffixes far more wide-ranging than the .org, .com or .info currently in use.
[quote] The new names could cover locations such as .london, industries such as '.bank' or entertainment such as .gamble.
It could also pave the way for an online red light district where all adult sites carry the suffix .xxx.
But critics warned it would make the net a more complex and expensive place for small businesses and home users, while offering easy pickings for fraudsters and cybersquatters.
Yesterday's move to open up the Internet was agreed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
It will replace the current system by which all addresses fall under 260 geographical or generic names.
The new names will start to appear from next year.
'This is a historic resolution,' said ICANN's Peter Dengate.
'It's going to make a big difference to how the Internet looks and works.'
But there are a lot of details to be worked out, not least the cost of buying a domain.
Fees for top level names could be as high as

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
I don't know if I should be happy or annoyed. Yays, more domains can become available if I can't get one I want, but boo because I could become an easy target for fraudsters.
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Hmm.. interesting. Tis a shame that they'll get be able to have their own suffix. I mean it's easier if everyone had a .com address seeing as it's a lot more rememberable.

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Plus, it will be so expensive, i mean up to 50k? wow.
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Now when I come to think of it, it is bad. More sites with odd suffixes, $50,000 domains, 'tis going to be annoying now
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end

No, their site gets a different extension added, or deleted.

"Yes, we will make the internet much bigger and make domains much easier to obtain by making more complex URLs be created so people don't know what site they need to visit! Is it a .com site or a .xxxsexipr0nz site?"

Where do you get your information from?..."Internet AS WE KNOW IT will come to an end"...get your facts straight.
This whole .w/eyouwant thing is a dumb idea to show off which sites spend a lot of money ...and which don't...another split in the social status...except on the inteNET this time!

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
This would come in handy for all parents who are trying to block porn websites for their kids. They can just block the whole .xxx suffix and voilla, no porn.

But then there's .porn or whatever suffix that suggests it's a porn site that they need to filter...
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
mhmh, alfons it wont be that easy, i mean unless the site is completely "18+" they'll make some loophole.
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Doubt that much will change, why pay more for a .whatever when you can get a .com for cheaper and be more recognised.
Seriously who actually types in whatever.com in this day and age? It's all down to google to what site I find anyway. If a company wants to spend an extra few grand on a domain that will most likely make them 0% more findable rather than put it all into google ads, so be it.
I do see this as something ISP might limit with their whole new payment structure. No doubt that will either work one way to make everyone stick with .com, or make alternative domains cheaper.
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
This is so STUPID , they should just keep the basic .org, .com, .net, .co.uk ect.

But unless made compulsary I dont think no porn site will have a suffix that will indiicate that they are a porn site. Then half of their customers from countries where porn aint allowed will be gone for good.

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Can you please give us the source of where you got all this from? It'd explain a whole lot.

Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
Imagine how much more visitors we'll get with a ragezone.xxx domain =p
-
Re: Dot-com era brought to an end
More domains, less security and higher prices, it's hard to decide, if it's good or bad.

How will they? If big businesses are prepared to pay a loa of money for custom extensions, they'll make over 1k in a day.
