Depends . for playing games that is all u will ever need :)
for server hosting u need WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more upload speed but for gaming its awsome :)

don't see how a new computer has anything to do with your net speed. Also playing online does not require anything more than a 256kb broadband connection ; you can even play most online games with dialup.

Nah... that's not enough. This is my campus speed and I STILL lag. So what does it mean? I need new PC :(
It means absolutely nothing.
You got your download and upload, and you got your ping time. Your up and download is just the amount that will be transferred at once, your ping time is the actual time that it takes for the info to reach the point. I can understand this is confusing since it's quite similar.
Basicly when you are chatting with someone and you type a message and hit enter, then with a low ping (lower is better) the message will arrive to the other person nearly instantly, with a high ping this takes a little while longer. Obviously for chatting it ain't a big deal, for gaming it is.
Now the download/upload speed is just the amount of data it can transfer in a second, but just because it can move a lot at once, it doesn't mean it arrives just as fast.
See it like a bus and a ferrari, if you were to move people to a destination then the ferrari would get there faster, but the bus would move more people at a time.
Obviously a good connection will both have a good down/upload and a good ping.
Especially with shared connections like on a campus the ping tends to be really bad, so many people are requesting data that the connection gets overloaded, yes you can still get a good download, but that's because it's just 1 connection.
So you have speed, and the amount you can transfer at once, in most cases the amount is more important, say with opening a webpage, playing a streaming video or downloading something, but in games the amount of data transferrred is extremely low, whereas the speed of the connection is way more important.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/294639627.png and I almost never lag in gaming. Lagging in games doesn't mean you have a low speed but ussually that your ISP is playing tricks on you... lag spikes etc., or other times the server's fault.
I always disconnect from games due to lag. :/
