Lightwave is a good alternative (as long as you save in correct formatting).
A 2008 trial can be found via google. Shouldn't take overly long. It's going to take a bit of page checking though, as most websites that post it either link to the website or just mention visiting the website. Find a website that uploaded a copy of it.
Sorry that this post wasn't very helpful =P

You can use PRO/Desktop (type it on Googs) its quite good you will need a tut on the site or somethin but we're using it at school and you can make some coolio 3-D's easily also to make a file a certain file type (As long as its known by your pc) just out .Ase if it aint search up a way add files types.
Peace!

You can create .ASE files with 3ds max 2009, it just takes a little time to actually bother reading what the menu says.
Go to File > Export...
Select ASCII Scene Export (*.ASE) from the dropdown list, and you're good to go.
