Running Remote Servers

Well, first of all I suggest you download Microsoft SQL.
If you are going to run remote, installing the client version of SQL is enough.

SERVER SIDE
1. On the server configure its Networking Configuration (right click server and properties in Enterprise Manager)
2. Enable TCP/IP and specify a port. (properties of TCP/IP) (REMEMBER THE PORT NUMBER)
3. Then click the Active Directory tab, Add the server to Active server directory.
4. Click to Security Tab - select SQL Server and Windows for Authentication
5. Make sure there is an "sa" account in the Users section. It is there by default, change the password to whatever you like.

CLIENT SIDE
1. Install the SQL Client
2. Open SQL Server Client Network Utility
3. Enable TCP/IP, in properties change the port to the one you specified on SERVER.
4. Go to Alias, click Add -
Server Alias (name for server) eg. MU
Server Name (server IP) eg. abc.no-ip.com
Port Number (should be the port you specified earlier)
5. Click OK and head on to Enterprise Manager
6. Add a new server, select the <Server name> you have made in Server Alias of the network utility.
7. Use SQL login and use the "sa" account with the password you have made.
It should connect successfully and it will show the database files.

Make the appropriate ODBCs to have server-client communication in other programs.
Theres another guide for adding ODBC so go search for it.

Once its done, if you want to use MU Editor REMOTELY
OPEN the DNS.ini file in the directory.
DNS = <ODBC NAME YOU MADE FOR MU SERVER> eg. MuOnline
User= sa
Password = <the one you made> eg. abcdefg

Save and close the file, MU Editor will now work!

If you want to run WEBSERVER REMOTELY (like my private server),
in conn/config files for the site, you may type in "MU" (or if you made another name in Server Alias, use that) for server address ($dbhost). It should locate the server automatically.

thanks DaRK, I'm just suprised that, if they don't know what Im talking about, they would at least ask, but here not a single question haha. Correct me if there are errors in the guide ;)

well i can add some, if you do int on the LAN you don't even need SQL on a client machine ;) just setup ODBCs and that's it :-D

well its a good guy i hope it will work for subserver im planning to have only concern is will it cuase alot of stress on my machine if i have the peeps that wil be hosting server connect thru my database

Server side = the host computer, where your database is.

ok kinkedo I got one thing to say to you... YOU ARE GREAT!!! :P

My server is gonna change host in the future and I'm going to be the subserver as a special event (My server will have harder monsters and will drop nice items for the very good ppl :P) Anyway I'll read through this guide later so I can start to get a subserver (And maybe more in the future :)) Anyway thanks in advance for this guide. You are the best :P

Imagine I want to purchase a server from www.theplanet.com or www.servermatrix.com. How could I Install a server there using the servers mssql and everything in the server?

The server is ran on this current computer , and so is the site , then why cant it connect , it makes no sence , _mureg works , and mu editor works , but for some reason my site doesnt work.

can you give me a screenshot of the error you get?
for $dbhost, it should be the name of the server you created along the guide above.
but then...your's is a local server...
Actually check if you have made other mistakes (like spelling)
post a pic of your error.

i can't find this alias, my MySql is on Russian language(: can you post screenshot or something?

Its suppose to be MSSQL. Just download the installation folder, and during the installation phase, it will ask for client files.

What are the ODBCs?

so if i want to run a remote website i just follow the guide then download a webserver, extract Mutoolz or something then just change the $db_hostname?

for example in Mutoolz config file it is like this (server side):
$config['db_hostname'] = 'MuOnline'

On Client side what do i put? MuOnline or the name of my SQL server?

Its easy, you can use OBDC, or if you want to, in MU WEB, if you install it, put the ip of the server's computer, but if you want to put sql on other computer, OBDC is the easisest way, choose the host computer on DBASE server, but why bother doing remote, if you have two pc, why not create 2 servers
