Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
This is potentially huge. Viacom, which owns MTV and Paramount Pictures, has been involved in a legal battle with YouTube (and now Google) over what Viacom alleges is massive copyright infringement of their property. Viacom claims to have identified 160,000 unauthorised clips of its programmes.
Now, a US court has told Google that it must hand over the a detailed log - some 12 terabytes of data - which contains the log-in ID of all users, as well as their IP address and information on all the video clips they have ever watched. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights group, has called the ruling

"12 terabytes of data"
Have fun analyzing that.

Wow, that sounds like a bunch of Bullshit to me. =/ Viacom needs to wake the fuck up imo.

Amusing. Enjoy your 12 terabytes, morons.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Now watch thousands of people delete their accounts, hoping it will help.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
My guess is that Viacom wants to deal with the people who constantly put illegal content on there. Quite simply put is that Google doesn't do much to deal with those people who do that, Viacom has the right to demand that either Google goes after those people, or that they can. Ofcourse getting these logs goes much further... they would only need those logs of people uploading their copyrighted content.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Is anyone taking bets how long it'll take Viacom to search through 1.5billion videos, 12 terabytes of data and god knows how many users?

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Lol this is stupid. Is youtube really responsible for the videos uploaded? I dont think so. They cant watch every single video, its impossible. Thats why i prefer redtube anyway lol :P

If they can't then they shouldn't offer the service, simple as that.
Obviously it's not that black and white, but in the end though they are responsible for the content on there, it's their job to quickly remove copyrighted material and remove the user.
Now ofcourse that will never stop things, so they have to take actions against those people aswell, seeing as the user is doing illegal things, they should be able to get their internet connections cut off, repeated offenders should be given a fine etc.
If they want too then they can do something against this, but it will cost them money, not just for the follow ups and all that, but also due to all those illegal videos making the site more popular etc.
In the end though, like i said, they are responsible for the content on the site, if they can't handle the large amounts of illegal content on their site, then they should either take actions or close it down.

I respect your point of view, but are you seriously suggesting that Google close YouTube if a solution cannot be found? A good deal of the internet as we know it is based around YouTube and spin-offs such as RedTube.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
No, but those are their options. A company can online be covered so much with the whole "we can't control what our users upload", basicly they can use this defense IF they handle these situations fast, like in a day or so, seeing as they can't they are basicly offering illegal content, so because Youtube is so big, a company like Viacom looses money due to them.
So like i said, they have to handle the situation or close the site down, not because people want it closed, but because they constantly offer illegal content.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Wtf this is crap i mean if people have certain copyright things on their video people sometimes ask like "whats the song?" and then its also advertising lol..
But yea the 12 terabytes ROFL hope they have fun

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Well Viacom if they hire extra employees than searching through all that info will take less time eh?
-
Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user
Youtube, the next Napster... ouch. If they identified all the 160,000 clips. Why don't they send a list to Youtube so they can take it down.

Re: Google must hand over the viewing habits of every YouTube user

SSJGohan (probably SSJ from Zomg :P), youtube is not responsible for what users upload (as stated in the DMCA).

GohanSSJ... not that hard to read now ain't it.
Youtube is not responsible for what they upload, however they are responsible for deleting illegal content, because if they just turn a blind eye, then they are distributing illegal content.
So basicly they are protected for say a day, maybe even a few days, but if it doesn't get deleted then, then they are really responsible for it.
So like i said, they either need to get a handle or the situation, or close down, because if they can't handle all the illegal content, then they are doing something illegal.
