Well, I wanted to buy those at the knife shop, but I only had like 10 dollars and the guy knew I'm underage even though I told him I'm 18. That knife is the only one I could buy. =[
At least it beats my embarassingly fingernail and toenail all-in-one which I mistakenly thought was a pocket knife when I was younger. =[
Also, my parents were with me when we stopped by a gas station that sells nice pocket knifes. They wouldn't let me buy a big-ass pocket knife there.
Yeah carrying knives doesn't jive too well with us Brits right now.
I needed a real and proper knife only cos of the work i am doing. As a security guard i am on a daily basis faced against all kinds of people who would jump me just for the hell of it.
Now before you start getting any sort of images into your head, i do not sit with 5 other guards behind a desk of monitors in a shopping center watching people while eating donuts and drinking coffee ; I am a single guard stationed in the worst (most violent) suburb full of drunks and aboriginals. I guard a cinema till midnight, and shit gets crazy on friday and saturday ; i deal with cops showing up at least 3 times a night. A car was set on fire and blew up at the exact spot i was guarding about 45 mins after i had finished my shift. Another guard who does midnight to 6am there gets bricks thrown at him and was stabbed a fortnight ago. Yet he has a fully trained guard dog with him and carries a baseball bat.
I NEED the protection of a knife. Guards cannot have heavy flashlights, we cannot have any weapon, we cannot have steel capped shoes, and we cannot do anything which would lead to a conflict. Those are the NORMAL rules ; but we deal with people who are drunk and stoned, and they are between the ages of 14 and 24 and they move in groups and they carry all sorts of stuff with them. I have a knife, i carry a 1.5KG mag light with me, i have steel capped work boots on, and i have a steel pipe hidden away in a corner.
If i have to, i will do whatever i need to to ensure i don't get attacked ; my life is worth more than this shitty job. My boss understand this, and all us guards in this area are on special freelance contracts. Basically this means that if any shit goes down, we do what we have to to get away form the situation, we call him up, all the guards in the area show up, take off our uniforms, and we get the trouble makers out of the area. If anyone tries to identify us during all this, we can simply deny it, the other guards back us up, and he terminates our contracts if we have to so they never know we are guards.
Sounds bad i now, but the area that we work in is even worse. there is not alot the police can do when 85% of the trouble is caused by groups of 14-16 year olds.
Stuns are better!
Nothing more funny than a *hardman* doing the floor dance which squealing :D Plus it's essentially harmless thus a great defensive weapon. Granted it's not going to stop you getting shot, but pulling a knife on someone is going to escalate the situation way out of control imo. Also taking a knife out on a 14-16 year old is a tad worrying!
Personally I think violent drunks should just be banned from drinking. They can't handle the alcohol, and it's for the safety of the rest of the community. Give them a month+ ban per offence and they will learn to behave themselves, once they realise they have nothing to do and it wasn't worth getting into a fight.
One question - why would you go about carrying a pocket knife? I'm sure Australians have a less chance of being stabbed than someone from London.
Many people carry around knives just for the fun of it... For self-defence also.
Like my friend has one, he always just flips it, and just does tricks with it. It's weird, but it entertains him o.O
Other people, like Rish, carry it around for self-defence and such.
the only knife i ever have with me is a pocket knife and I rarely carry it with me, usually near my pc or in my kitchen, its ahrdly good enough to put a picture up either but it sure comes in handy around the house
rish, if you haven't already look into a kobutan course, mag lights were designed around the kobutan
You gotta admit that pocket knives are fun to stab leaves and cut off plants with. :P
A knife is probably the worst self defence instrument you can use. They instantly escalate any situation, and subduing somebody with blunt force will always be infinitely preferable and on the whole less nasty than stabbing them. Use a Kubotan if you must go out armed.
If we could buy stun guns here, i'd get one :P
Taking out a knife on a 14 year old is overkill and really stupid, but i'm not talking about one. Group of at least 10 to 12 of them. They are all drunk somehow and over half of them are high, and if you try to tell them to piss off to somewhere else they throw the nearest thing at you which is usually a glass bottle/rock.
And i do not take a knife out to intimidate them, i take it out after they have already started attacking me. If they throw a bottle/rock at me or run at me with a sharp object, i pull it out and yell a warning at them, i have never had to actually use it on anyone and the day i do is the day i quit my job. I've had to pull it out once before, luckily another guard next door heard the commotion and released his guard dog which pounced on the attacker.
It has many uses, only idiots use it for violence.
checked it out, it actually looks rather interesting and amazingly useful.
As i said, it is used for intimidation, not for actual stabbing. Not surprisingly a knife is better at threatening a drunk person than a miniature 6 inch metal rod.
Only pussies walks around with knives

i don't own a knife myself, but my friends did own some, mostly butterfly knives. i like those mostly because of the flippage you are able to do with em. lol.
Speaking of those but I was speaking to a copper not too long ago and he mentioned about how they were getting trained by US officials on how do manage situations with stun guns, I wouldn't be surprised if
they did come to Australia within the next couple of years.
