Absolute distance = the real distance in miles or km between 2 places
Relative distance = The costs, difficulty and time to get somewhere (difficulty increases if there are traffic jams for example). Accessibility is a major factor of the difficulty (it's pretty hard to get to the rain forest of Africa for example, since flying there is easy (to Africa), but the roads there are crap as far as I know).
Costs and time are pretty obvious.
Relative Distance Def, from answers.com

Pff... it's so freaking easy... it's the distance between you and a relative... sheesh... :P
