Mr Straw said the decision was based on medical evidence that Biggs's condition had deteriorated and he was not expected to recover.


Biggs, who turns 80 this weekend, is severely ill in hospital with pneumonia and doctors have said there is "not much hope".
Last month the Justice Secretary rejected Biggs's application for parole on the grounds that the robber was "wholly unrepentant" about his crimes.
Biggs was rushed to the Norwich and Norfolk Hospital from his cell at Norwich prison on Tuesday and will remain on bed watch overnight.
The three Prison Service staff watching him will be withdrawn tomorrow, once the licence for his release is finalised.
The decision means Biggs can celebrate his birthday on Saturday a free man. It will be 46 years to the day since the robbery.
Biggs was a member of a 15-strong gang which attacked the Glasgow to London mail train at Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, in August 1963, and made it off with

Wow thats a big crime he done there. But i think he should have only got 20 years. Well good luck to him anyway.

Yeah it was ALOT back then and still is now, but i mean i could go and murder someone now and get what...10 years? ad he robbed a train and got 40 years, i dont think its right :D

2,6m GBP in '63 is equilavent to 40m$ today.

At first I thought this was about Escape the fate.

Life meant life back in those days, now the average life imprisonment is around 11.3 years last statistics say, I kind of agree with letting him out for his final days/weeks but on the other hand you do the crime you do the time.

If you say life, it should mean life.

Yes if you Murder someone then it should be LIFE for a LIFE,

but on topic...they recogn he wont last long, thats why they released him, even though a week earlier his parole had been denied

It is like that in some areas in the US

If you murder a cop that's a different story.

But it does do some good.
You wouldn't want a murderer living right next door to you.
