Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
Just yesterday supreme court judges decided that having small amounts of marijuana for personal use and as long as we do not harm anyone is no longer a felony.
This is huge step. Every single day I woke up as a criminal, from now on I'm just like any other citizen. Will not need to hide no more, won't go to jail for smoking.
I waited for this day for so long!!!
Quote:
Argentina's Supreme Court on Tuesday decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use, tossing out tough provincial drug laws whose penalties it deemed unconstitutional.
The high court ruling protects "the privacy of adults who are responsible for their own conduct," according to a court statement.
It said the constitution protected "the private actions of individuals who in no way offend order or public morality, or harm a third party, who answer to God free from a judge's authority."
The court ruled on a case involving the trial and sentencing of five young people arrested during a sweep in early 2006, when police seized between one and three marijuana cigarettes from each of them.
While the decision could be seen as a victory for Argentinians seeking to overturn laws which funneled many recreational drug users into the penal system, the court said in its statement that the ruling "cannot be considered legal permission to consume indiscriminately."
The verdict comes just four days after Mexico legalized possession of small quantities of drugs such as heroin, marijuana and cocaine, arguing that limited resources are better used in the fight against organized drug crime.
The change means Mexicans can possess up to five grams of marijuana, 500 milligrams of cocaine, two grams of opium or 50 milligrams of heroin without fear of prosecution.
Congratulations Mexicans!!!

Re: Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
Horrah for Argentina!
Too bad I don't think America will ever get on that band wagon. Not until maybe my generation starts taking offices.
Then again..... they hold on 'dear' to it I guess for the 'job' aspect and arguments to get more money from tax payers to throw at the endless war on drugs. That and they could take the stupid "You support terrorism by smoking weed." Crap down.... Granted some way/form or another you MAY be doing that.... but if WE could have it AVAILABLE we wouldn't be trading guns for weed with Mexico/Canada/Who the hell ever they do it with. >.>
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN ARGENTINA!!! SMOKE ONE FOR ME TOO! :)

Re: Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
Well then, in that case... it's not really legal if you think about it. I mean, sure you are allowed up to 5 grams of weed, but the drug dealer, or someone he's associated with obviously has to have more if they want any form of good business, and they could be charged for it you know? All that's left is for them to legalize it, regardless of amount. Until then, enjoy your weed!

Yeah, all the laws are like.
Just like copyright laws on DVD's.
You are allowed to make back-up copies for your personal use as long as you own the original disc. BUT... it's still illegal to break or bypass the copyright protection in order to make that back-up copy.
So technically it's still illegal even though it's legal...

Do you know why most kids start smoking to begin with?
It's because their friends are doing it and to look cool. Therefor making it legal makes it less cool, because we all know how uncool legal things are, so in the end less people will be pressured into smoking to begin with.
So then you're only left with the few that are bound to smoke regardless are legality.
And even making legal in public wouldn't be that bad. Of course there would still be conduct laws, so you can't go about doing whatever. But most people can act rather normal when high, that is unless they're completely bombed and don't know wtf they're doing. But you aren't going to get that way with a maximum allowed legal amount of weed.

Re: Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
I don't want to be able to smoke in public. Marihuana and cigarettes must be equalized. In Argentina 1 year ago they banned cigars from public places, no restaurants (they can have smokers zone but divided and air conditioners to clean the smoke), no shopping malls, no anywhere. Marihuana should be banned that exact way. Public smoking has a lot to do with all the cash tobacco companies place for governments. Until the gov starts selling pot or allowing legit selling points we could never have an unlimited smoking zone other than our houses.
The only thing I wanted was to be able to have 2 joints always rolled up in my pocket and no1 can take me to jail. I can wait until I'm at home to smoke!!
In order to gain some freedoms we must always give up others.

Very unreal. Cigars are legal and people still smoke them cause they are cool.

Re: Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
it still is junk, and that means 1 more type of junk for us to consume whilst there it is for the 'others': profit, and more profit.

Way to invent a reason without even thinking it over at all. The only reason people don't smoke weed as much as alcohol is that the former is illegal. There are way, way more drinkers in the world than weed smokers.
It's about the kids too. Seeing the grown-ups smoking makes them want to do the same. Just like kids seeing their parents drunk often in their childhood has a far higher chance to become alcoholics themselves. It's natural. They learn from their elders. That's why public drinking, even a pint of beer, is illegal most places.
I can easily get so high I can't stand on my feet with 5 grams. It's called quality.

Re: Yes! Marihuana is no longer banned in Argentina!
I fully endorse this step toward the logical conclusion of completely legalising all drugs.

Because most illegal drugs aren't lethal and those that are are only made more lethal by their criminal status
