How do I explain Facebook to my grandparents?
I tried telling them that it's a 'social networking site' (because it is), but they were lost at social. They were asking me the benefits of having Facebook over e-mailing. I told then you can join groups, make photo albums, post status's, write on peoples walls, etc. Then I had to explain the difference between Twitter and Facebook, and once they knew what a "status" was, they understood what Twitter was, but didn't see why they would have two different sites for the same thing.
I'll be e-mailing them this link once I get some decent replies, or showing them this post tomorrow morning (once again, if I get some decent replies). I also tried explaining how Facebook is mostly used by the "younger" generations (people from, say 12 to 35) and how if you want your privacy (like most adults do, well the ones I know) then stick to e-mailing where your information isn't plastered over the internet for everyone to see.
Also, another thing I had to explain is that no one can really view anything on your profile until they accept your friend invite. They can't view your photos, comments, wall posts, only your friends/mutual friends. Anything else that I should explain?
Remember, she will be reading this so keep the language to a minimum. XD
Have fun, and thanks. :P
Edit: she also wants to know how I know how to read/post on a forum without University level education. :P:
Re: How do I explain Facebook to my grandparents?
You yourself said, it's basically for younger people who like socializing with their friends. Why would an elder person want to join Facebook? Yes they may want to socialize with their friends, but exactly how many of THEIR friends are going to also be using it? I place my bet on... none.
Stick to emails.
Re: How do I explain Facebook to my grandparents?
i said this to mine.
"its a place where friends can share everything together, pictures , music, videos, its also good to check up on other peoples day"
Re: How do I explain Facebook to my grandparents?
I had hard time explaing it to even my parents, can't imagine what would I tell my grandparents.
Re: How do I explain Facebook to my grandparents?
Tell them that the difference between e-mailing and using social networking sites is that e-mailing is useful and networking sites are a waste of time, that can cause more trouble than it solves for older people or young people that aren't aware that the internet is serious business. Very serious business.

Personally, I'd just say it's a book with loads of faces inside it.
