Never mind about gradient backgrounds with css. It still uses images.
Templates generally look very nice when using css. They're clean and very feasible. Most websites uses images, but they're like professionally designed.

I think it's a bit bland. I didn't care for the rainbow bg at first, but without it it's sort of worse. Maybe pick a color or two that contrast and give it some life!
Other than the lack of color-scheme, it's nice. The few images you use are fine, but use some colors that go together. Look at some other templates to get an idea and such.

Design will be 400px fixed. No change to width please.
In the example, fill the content area with stuff until it goes beyond your panels on the left. Also experiment with coloration etc there.
Just to make sure it works like you expect.
Also, the backgrounds are overly noisy and detract from focus on the primary portions of the site. They should be simple and should place focus where you want it, not spread it out.

400px width? What are you designing for TV screens from the 50s? I've seen people made fun of for making sites constrain to 800px still. You need to at least double that, or make it 560px and put two sidebars. Also, the colors still don't work.

Now onto SEO. You're going to hate me after this, just so you know.. But, you'll thank me in the long run, if you make it far.
SEO is Search Engine Optimization. It means exactly what it stands for. Web Managers, Developers and Designers use SEO to have their site talk to search engines. The more your site expresses itself towards a unique, powerful niche, the better the SE`s (Search Engines) will rank your site for targeted searches.
For example, if you search Versatile CMS in the Google SE, my site, WysGui, comes up 4th.. Following one of my incoming links.. and my competitor.. I used to be ahead, but things change everyday :O:
I follow a pattern like so when I create my web-sites:
First, pick a few niches that you're passionate about. They should be unique, have little competition, and you should prepare to learn allot, and become an expert. [Don't do that just yet]
Second, do Keyword research to find out how many people are searching for that, and how many sites already have that niche covered. Hunt down competition, and find out what makes you different, and better. Always tell the truth, of course. ;).. If competition is too hard in that niche, review step 1 again.
Third, pick one of your niches from step 1, based on step 2, make a list of keywords to use during SEO, and begin step 4.
Fourth, Now it's time to worry about design. Try to make a design that applies to your audience. If you don't know what your audience wants, review step 2. [Review your competition]
Fifth, With your template & style-sheet completed, it's time to work on SEO. Your title needs to be perfect, not too long, not too short, and as keyword optimized as possible. Don't keyword spam. That means taking a keyword, and putting it all over your site to the point where SE`s think you're trying to cheat. Don't put it more then 10-20x on a page, (depending on how much content you have around the words, it will vary). Use a variety of search terms & keywords. Make meta data for keywords and description. Again, these fields cannot be spammed.
When you write content, use the keywords in <h#> tags. It's very important to use <h#> tags. That is, <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc. Headline tags, if you will.
Content rich sites are ideal for every single niche. Every single niche. So get writing!
Sixth, Begin joint ventures with similar niche sites, [not sites you consider competition], and exchange links. Always look for that win/win situation. Also, it's time for research on your niche. Learn anything and everything you can about your niche. It's time to become an expert in your field. Good luck!
Once your done with all that, go to http://www.websitegrader.com to find out how well you did. It all comes down to this!!

To give you an idea of a sort of good score, my site is 68/100. That means that out of everyone who submits their site to Website Grader, mine is more effective than 67% of them. Try to get above 50, and you're above average.
