It's not (IMHO) better. In fact, a PT server would prefer SQL 7, 2002 works, 2005 is usable but we have to work around a couple of things configuring it differently and allowing a secondary entry attack point.
It is my understanding that you can still use SQL 2008 with the same work-around as we use in 2005... but it's definitely not better because the PT server doesn't use any of the improvements made from 2002 upwards, and does expect depreciated features in newer versions.
If you are using MS Server 2008 or newer, you may find SQL Server 2008 plays better with your OS, and it may work better for your Web Server (IIS or WHY). So I certainly wouldn't say don't use it but you won't gain any advantage from it for PT.
In order to make PT use the new (better) features in SQL 2008, you would have to recode to an extent that you may as well make it work with MySQL, or PostgreSQL... which are both considerably better than MS SQL, at least in terms of the free versions.
