How to make a Substitute D: Drive

Okay a TON of people are looking all over the forums for a guide or some help on making a D: drive, so I’ll remake my guide again. It’s slightly long, but I hope everyone understands it. When I had it up before the wipe, a lot of people thanked me :P. Okay here we go:

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure you don’t have anything physical on that D: drive (like a CD drive or DVD drive: go to My Computer and look at your drives. Now if you already have a D: drive you’re good to go (like two hard drives, if you’re not sure just continue with the guide :)). Here’s a pic of what my My Computer looks like:

Now I, like all of you reading this assuming you have no D drive, don'y have one. Now here's how to move your other drives down to make room for your drive:

First, Go to Control Panel in your Start Menu

and then go to Administartive Tools

Next, you'll want to click on Computer Management

Then in Computer Management, you'll want to click on Disk Managment (If you don't see it, click on Storage to make it drop down below it, or in it's vicinity.)

You'll notice I have a CRAPTASTIC ammount of Hard Drive, as well as space, but you don't see me not having a server, eh? Okay besides that, you'll want to change the letters of both CD drive and DVD drive (unless you only have one). Right click on the CD/DVD drive and click Change Drive Letter and Paths

Now in here you'll see three buttons; Add, Change, and Remove. Before I changed my CD and DVD drive letters it came up with some warning. I haven't had any problems, so if you do I don't know what you did.

go ahead and change your letters to anything, except D (of course :P). Now you need to make that D drive

the concept of the D drive really pissed me off at first since I didn't know what it meant. Well here's how to make it:

load up command prompt (or Ms-Dos prompt) through whatever method you want (I prefer going to run..and typing in cmd as an easy shortcut. ;)) okay you load it up and you'll see this:

now if you type subst /? and you're new to this, you'll see a bunch of crap. At least that's what I thought it was. When you're done with guide maybe you'll understand what that means. EX lets say you want to make a server (lol :P) like Mu and you put the severfiles in C: and no other folder/drive. So in cmd you'd type subst D: C:\muserver (or whatever you named your server files)

Once you type subst D: C:\muserver you should get this

it should appear nothing happened but when you recheck your My Computer....YOU MADE A D: DRIVE!

Congrats ^^ and thanks to Iod for this next tid-bit. Everyone know when you log-off or turn your computer off, you'll lose you D; drvie, but nothing in it, you wont lose your server folder, just the drive. Now Iod posted this .bat file that loads if up everytime you log back on!

whats all nice .but i dotn nwo why when i make d driver at c its show it but when i try add mu files it see onyl c ,when i go to whis administrativ tools it see to only c. what the hell it mean? i restar my pc and it is no more d and when i use this bat fiel what you give it work again.hawe sombody same problem? or can i somehow to make work server on c driver?

yes, when you go to the admin tools in the control panel you will see C: but DONT CHANGE YOUR HARD DRIVE LETTER. You want to change your CD/DVD drive letters by right-clicking one of the and chose change letter or paths and make either one any letter except D

Hmm, it works. But I can't see D:\ when i tried to restore database, will it still work if i forcefully put it to D:\muserver\DB\DB_MuOnline.bak ?

Change way to restore with C:\muserver\muserver\... or D:\muserver\... all works.

lol, even more noobier info. If it gives you an error after you go to command prompt, (something like -invalid path C:\muserver) then just go to c:\ and make a folder called muserver !!!!! DONT DELETE IT!!!!!!!! and then go to command prompt and it should work if you do that thing again

My D: drive is a restore drive. That will work for K:?

I cant change my Drive D: When i open that administration there is no drive D:

exactly .. you make one with the subst command :P

you have to understand if you read this guide, that means you either:

1) don't have a D drive
2) your D drives your backup drive so you use another letter


the drive you create is a VIRTUAL one, So SQL wont recongnize it; it's not physical. Maybe you realized that when you had to choose a path for the restoring in SQL and only saw a C drive? Well apparently not.

and if you can't firgure this out please stop trying to make a server, it's too complicated for you. I can't make it any easier and noobs posting replies don't help either

If you need to setup your SQL server with the C:/ Drive anyway, then what's the use of making a D:/ disk as well?

lol i got a question, y are the folder and top bar white out...if u wanted to protect your name (Will), then u should hav tooken out the address bar and "Will's Computer" in ur start menu o.O

i ahve a problem i type in the subst/? and it says subst is not reconized as an internal or external command, opperable program or batch file.

ffs, the guides already lay it out in the simplest terms possible, there are even movie guides to show you how..

IF YOU CAN'T FOLLOW A SIMPLE GUIDE THEN STOP TRYING TO MAKE A SERVER, YOU WILL JUST BE YET ANOTHER CLUELESS ADMIN TO BE HACKED AND INFECTED AND OVERRUN BY N00B CHEATERS. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

If you fail after your first few tries, give up and see if one of your freinds can/has made a server, or find someone else who has made one and play theirs (look in Advertisement section). :rolleyes:

i didnt use this guide ....but i have a problem relating to this

when i go to restore the database and look for the substitute drive i made..which was D: and the the mu server files....i only have C: to choose from...and when i go to My Computer i can see C: and D: drive righ there
