Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3
Hey all
Today i was on microsoft update and saw this update :
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706)
Should I download it and install ?
Will it help in security or something or it may cause problems to the SQL to work with PT ?
Ty,
Avi

Ty,
Avi
from what i know Avi bro,
the service pack used for PT was 2,
i don't think another service pack to the sql should make much diff,
just better off not to risk the update it's never usually much more important.
Re: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3
The original release was written before SQL Server 2000 was released, which means it was designed for SQL Server 7.
The fact that it will still work with SQL Server 2008 means that SP3 will not break PT, but it no new features over SQL Server 2000 are used by PT, and (I've never been able to try it but) presumably none of the new features in SQL Server 2000 over SQL Server 7 are actually used.
With most Microsoft software, it is safer to use a high service pack old version than a just released new version. New features introduce new vulnerabilities and exploits, Service Packs don't usually add features, they just fix bugs and security flaws.
I know many people who continued using NT4 SP6 until Win2K was at SP2, and carried on using 2K SP3 until SP2 was out for 2K3 Server.
FYI, The version of SQL Server I packaged with the Personal Priston Tale release I posted, is already SQL Server SP3. So I know there is no problem using it. Updating Service Pack levels on existing systems has been known to cause issues with existing server side applications, but usually only if they are exploiting security holes themselves (badly written), or they rely on .NET framework packages whos' functionality changes with a .NET update.
What you choose to do is up to you, I can only recommend that if you do try it; you keep a restore point before (I think it tries to make one, but I'd manually create one too) and if you do have any issues, you can roll back the update. ^_^
