Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computer.
Some shops refuse to repair Apple computers That belong to Smokers.
The computer technicians say the warranty does not cover Smokers.
They do not want to operate machinery "infected" by nicotine.
Nicotine, they explain, is a substance considered hazardous.
The company Apple is not responsible for the failures of their equipment operated by smokers. At least that has claimed a woman in the U.S. The technician responsible for repairing your computer was returned intact, explaining that the security operatives exempt Apple from the obligation to repair computers "infected nicotine 'because this substance poses a risk to their health.
This woman's case is not unique. An association of U.S. consumers, The Consumerist, effectively warning that Apple's service does not take computers from smokers.
According to this organization, the company Steve Jobs has already replied officially to several consumer complaints and defending his mechanics. Nicotine, they say, is a substance harmful to health, and therefore maintenance technicians should not operate machinery "infected" with the substance.

Maybe this would finally decrees the Number of Smokers?
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
I seriously doubt that denying a service to a minority of users of a minority operating system is going to have any effect on smoking at all. It wouldn't stop me anyway. Besides as far as I can tell there's nothing to stop anyone from lying and saying they don't smoke.
Besides if true this whole thing is completely stupid. As if Apple staff are at any risk whatsoever from handling the computers of smokers. Bullshit.

Well yeah it is true
oh and as far as Laptops goes i think it would be quite noticible because of the smell.. if you smoke or not... well thats if ur a frequent smoker and what not...
Not saying that they now smell all the laptops that people turn in for fixing... Just making a point .

I love it.
Would i buy a car who has been previously owned by a smoker? Absolutely not; the smell sticks to the entire interior. It does the same to PC's because the intake fans suck in the smoke.
Apple knows that it has absolutely no affect on the health of technicians, it is just taking the piss and trying to make a point.
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
Believe it or not there are plenty of smokers who don't smoke indoors.

Read the actual report and the real article. They did not refuse service cos the owners were smokers. They refused service because upon opening the Macs, they discovered ash and the inside of the PC smelt heavily of cigarettes. In every case, the PC's were actually opened up and that is where they discovered the "contamination". The insides of PC's naturally build up dust - add smoke into the equation and you get a sooty residue covering all the components. This both increases the heat build-up as well as decreases the components life span. I know, i have encountered it myself several times.
It is not discrimination; they are refusing service just as a Cafe would ask you to leave if you were smoking inside.
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
I dont blame them, i mean would you enjoy opening up a computer to find a pile of ash, black parts on computer due to tar, Nope i wouldnt, and for that reason i agree with them ^^
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
Yea lol, everything should be limited due to smoking, it stops people from wanting to do something they KNOW will kill them.
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
This is true. Smoke does a lot of damage to any hardware with moving parts.
Which is why smokers' hard drives have a very short life span when you compare it to non smokers.

Really? You realize the platters are not exposed to open air. All it takes is a small particle on the disk to cause a head collision and kill the device (dust works great, and everyone has dust).
Nevertheless, not only smoke is damaging to hardware components. I don't classify them as discriminating against a smoker. In fact, I know that it's not. I read this on slashdot, and I agreed with a lot of the posts with similar experiences. I've worked on computers that were in a filthy home (cats, excessive dust, smoking within 5 feet of the device and blowing the smoke in its general direction). You get this DISGUSTING film that builds up on everything, fans get clogged because this film is sticky so hairs collect and cause degradation in airflow and effectiveness of convection cooling in general. Not only this, but it's totally conceivable of electrical shorts or damage to electrical parts directly causing massive drops in lifetime and performance of pretty much the entire system.
If I were to receive a device that a smoker owned for years and didn't maintain properly that would've required me to take a has-mat team and clean the system completely with solvents to remove the grime (we're talking big time cleaning, expensive too) just to get the system as clean as it should be again, I would too just say "fuck it" and hand the device back to the user and say I wouldn't honor any warranty. NO manufacturer will because it's seen in most of their clauses as damage, intentional damage by the end-user. You have a responsibility to keep your system clean. If you tossed random shit in your car's gas tank and then were surprised that your car died, would you expect the manufacturer to uphold a warranty? That's simply ludicrous thinking.
One also must consider the pungent and piercing odor that results from smoke residue and buildup on hardware. I've had a device brought in to work before only to have a wave of incredibly strong smoke odor fill the room, and when the device was removed, the smell lingered for days. That's very much unappreciated.
If you're a smoker and have a filthy home, I find it hard to believe a manufacturer won't honor a warranty if you routinely clean your system, like once every few months. Just open up the case outside, spray it out with canned air and some kind of evaporating solvent th at will loosen the grime etc, then wipe it down. 15-20 minutes of work and your system will remain as clean as the day you got it.

I agree with the rest of what you said except for this part. The difference is, in most places now, it is illegal to smoke in a public place i.e. a cafe, a barber shop, a bar, etc etc. Basically by them doing this, they are saying if you want to get help for your computer, you can't smoke in your own home. I personally don't smoke inside because my son will be here soon but it's still the fact of the matter that they are basically forcing Apple users who happen to be smokers to not smoke freely in their own home. I mean... nowadays, where else do you really have that you can smoke? I've actually been stopped by police while walking down the street, being asked not to smoke. Really? I can't smoke on a sidewalk when no one is around? I hope you get my point.
Re: Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers Computers.
If it doesn't state it in the terms and conditions of the warranty, they can't refuse to fix your computer. My mum used to smoke around my mac and if they ever refused to fix it on those grounds, i'd argue it with them.

Apple says smoke weed instead.

Lol, Yeah, makes as much sense as the rest of this thing.
They void the warranty if you keep it closed to acquire dust & ash, and they void the warranty if you open the case to clean it out. It's bullshit. I had a bunch of ash rain down on my house from the fire in the mountains, Not only did it smell like smoke & hot air for weeks, but the next time I blew out my computer, it was filthy. (Mostly with Ash, of course)..
If I had a Mac, and relied on the Mac Store to fix my computer, and they said no, I'd try to get whoever denied me fired.
